Best Mattresses for Guest Rooms

Best Mattresses for Guest Rooms

If you’re on the hunt for the best guest mattress, you’ve come to the right place. When most people are shopping for their guest room, their first thought is to find a cheap mattress that will simply “get the job done” because, hey, it beats an air mattress or the couch, right? Not really.

Having your guests sleep on a low-quality mattress — or, God forbid, a folding mattress — can result in a bad night’s sleep, leading to fatigue and aches and pains the next morning. Everyone wants their home to be an inviting and comfortable space, so why would you let your guests sleep on a bed that lowers their sleep quality? In our expert opinion, nothing says Southern hospitality like a comfortable guest room mattress, and we’re here to tell you that you don’t have to break the bank to get one.

Don’t let your loved ones from out of town sleep on a dingy mattress. Instead, here are some of our expert recommendations for the best mattresses for guest rooms.

Find Affordable Guest Room Mattresses

How do I choose a guest mattress?

When choosing a mattress for your guest room, you should focus on three major factors: size, firmness level, and type

What size mattress should I get for my guest room?

Every home is different, which means the mattress size you choose for your guest room should depend on the size of your guest room. The most standard mattress size for a guest room is a queen bed, as it can comfortably fit one or two sleepers, making it the smartest choice for your guests. If you have more space at your disposal, a king-size bed is sure to be a treat for any guest.

If your guest room has specific dimensions that won’t accommodate a standard-size mattress, ask our experts about getting a custom mattress made in any shape or size to fit your space perfectly.

What firmness level is best for a guest room mattress?

Here at Texas Mattress Makers, we believe that mattresses should not be tailored to the masses; however, when it comes to choosing a firmness level for a guest room mattress, you do have to think about which comfort level could please the most people.

Should a guest room mattress be soft or firm? We recommend getting a mattress that is in the medium comfort category. We carry two levels of medium mattresses:

  • Medium offers a balanced sleep experience, balancing softer cushioning with dense, sturdy support.
  • Medium-firm are responsive to pressure while still providing stable, even surfaces that resist sinking.

Any of these medium comfort options can provide a wide variety of guests with a comfortable yet supportive sleeping surface. If you tend to have recurring guests stay in your home and want to go above and beyond, learning about their sleep needs can also help make your decision.

If you’d like to feel each for yourself, head on over to any of our mattress stores in Houston and try out our mattresses in person!

What type of mattress for a guest room should I get?

First, here is a type of mattress that you should never buy: a bed in a box. As mentioned previously, many homeowners default to purchasing a cheap mattress for their guest bedroom, and the most commonly purchased cheap mattresses are beds in a box.

A bed in a box is a one-size-fits-all mattress model that claims to be “just as good as a regular mattress” but actually has a shorter life span. Trust us, just don’t do it. You’re way better off finding a quality mattress for your guest room with us.

The key to finding the perfect mattress for guests is choosing a mattress that promotes universal comfort — meaning any guest can sleep comfortably regardless of their preferences. So, how do you find such a mattress? This is where we, the experts, come in with our recommendations.

11th Annual One For One Bed Event

one for one bed event

This year marks our 11th annual #OneForOneBed Event, which means for the entire month of December, Texas Mattress Makers will donate a mattress to a Houston child in need for every mattress purchased in-store or online! Having a mattress is not a luxury but a necessity, and we want to make sure that every child has one so that they can dream big and live a better life. Will you help us give back?

About The #OneForOneBed Event

We started this campaign with Houston Children’s Charity after learning that every month, there is an ongoing waitlist of children right here in Houston who need a bed. At Texas Mattress Makers, we believe that everyone deserves quality sleep. We are in the business of helping Houstonians get their best night’s sleep, so to hear that so many children in our community don’t even have a mattress to sleep in at night was heart-wrenching. We knew that we wanted to be a part of making sure that every child had a bed that they could call their own, so we teamed up with Houston Children’s Charity’s A Better Night’s Sleep program to make a difference!

Skip to 4:00 to hear Rachael and Youval discuss how important this initiative is to Texas Mattress Makers.

How You Can Help

  1. Make your mattress purchase matter! Purchase a mattress from Texas Mattress Makers from now until January 5th, and we will donate a mattress for a child in need.
  2. Share this campaign with your friends and social network! You may not be in the market to buy a mattress but you may know someone who is. Sharing our social posts, this blog post, or our commercial with your friends and on your social platforms will help us further this cause!
  3. Donate directly to Houston Children’s Charity’s A Better Night’s Sleep program. For $100 you can donate a bed for a child in need — that includes a mattress, foundation, bed frame, linens, and a pillow!
  4. Share the program with people who are in need. We are not just advocating for people to support this program but for those who are in need as well. Applications and eligibility can be found on Houston Children’s Charity’s website.
  5. Sign up to volunteer at monthly bed distributions at our East Downtown Showroom & Factory location.

Why It Matters

  • Over 30,000 children have received a bed through Houston Children’s Charity’s A Better Night’s Sleep program since 2007.
  • Recipients receive a mattress, box spring, frame, sheets, blanket and a pillow.
  • An estimated 20,000 kids go without a bed each night in the Greater Houston Area.
  • Sleep is essential to a child’s health and growth. Research has found that children with deficient levels of growth hormone slept less deeply than the average child. Sound sleepers are less likely to be overweight, and reported illnesses declined with longer nightly sleep.
  • Scholastic performance is also affected dramatically by sleep. Research has shown that adding as little as 27 minutes of extra sleep per night makes it easier for children to manage their moods and impulses so they can focus on schoolwork.

Help us make Houston a better place by helping our local children live a better life and dream big!

Unpacking the Hype: What is a Bed in a Box?

What is a Bed in a Box?

If you’re wondering, “What is a bed in a box? Why is everyone talking about these beds on social media?” we can help you out. The bed in a box is a phenomenon that has taken the mattress industry by storm, especially as online shopping has become more popular.

As mattress experts, we are not huge fans of the bed in a box; in fact, we don’t manufacture or sell this type of mattress, and we likely never will. We’re going to be discussing what a bed in a box is, its function, and why you should consider buying a traditional, good quality mattress from our store instead.

How does a mattress in a box work?

A mattress rolled up and packaged on the floor

The main difference between a bed in a box vs traditional mattress is the way they are constructed and packaged. Beds in a box are typically mass-produced mattresses made of foam that are rolled and compressed, put into a box, and shipped right to the customer’s door. Some of the biggest mattress retailers, like Purple and Casper, are mattress in a box companies that make and sell beds in a box exclusively.

What’s the big deal about putting a mattress in a box? Here’s why we, as mattress manufacturers, don’t love the idea of beds in a box.

What is the point of a bed-in-a-box?

For the longest time, customers have had grievances with shopping for mattresses in person and have turned to online retailers for a more convenient shopping experience — but what they don’t know is that this route of purchasing a mattress actually costs them more money in the long run.

Bed in a box companies claim they can eliminate the stress and confusion of the mattress buying process while saving you a trip to the mattress store. Here is what an average bed in a box shopping experience looks like:

  • Step 1: You go online and fill out a short questionnaire about your preferences and what you might be looking for.
  • Step 2: You’ll look through their limited mattress selection. The listings (which are made up mostly of photos) may further explain the mattresses’ components and what kind of sleeper they might benefit from.
  • Step 3: You’ll choose either a soft, medium, or firm mattress.
  • Step 4: You click purchase.
  • Step 5: The foam mattress will then be compressed, the air will be vacuumed out of the bag, and your bed will be folded into a box that will be delivered to your door.

Does it sound too good to be true? In all honesty, it is. Though it is a convenient and easy way to get a mattress, there’s no guarantee that your bed in a box will be a long-lasting, comfortable bed. What you gain in convenience, you will likely lose in comfort, durability, and personalization. A mattress should be able to meet all of your requirements to guarantee lasting comfort and support.

Here’s what our founder, Youval, and mattress expert, Rachael, have to say about beds in a box — as you can see, Youval isn’t afraid to keep it real.

What are the disadvantages of a bed in a box?

Is a bed in a box worth it? In our expert opinion, no. If you’re trying to choose between a bed in a box vs traditional mattress, a traditional mattress will be better in quality, cost, and longevity. Here are some reasons why beds in a box are not worth their hype.

1. The shopping experience

With a bed in the box purchase, you’re answering a few surface-level questions without being able to test the mattress, meaning you won’t know if it’s a good fit until you’ve already purchased it. When your bed in a box arrives, you’ll have to wait for your compressed mattress to inflate before you can try it, which can take up to a few days. What if it’s uncomfortable or not what you expected?

Bed in a box companies know that returning a bed in a box is incredibly difficult and expensive — and they’re banking on you getting used to your imperfect mattress, rather than going through the process of trying again to find something that better suits your needs.

With a traditional mattress purchase, you’ll likely go to a showroom location where you can try out the mattress, talk to an expert, and leave with a mattress that you’re confident in. Traditional mattresses are sold in what they call “ready to sleep,” meaning you can sleep on your mattress as soon as it arrives at your door.

In short, you can’t judge a mattress’s comfort or quality by just reading that it’s ‘soft’ or ‘firm’ online. You won’t truly know how it feels until you lie on it, and waiting until after you buy may leave you disappointed for years to come.

2. The components

A mattress made from low-quality components is simply a bad mattress. Many beds in a box are made out of some of the oldest foam and elastic components in the industry. This foam (referred to as viscoelastic in the industry) is typically produced at an extremely low cost outside of the U.S., meaning it’s more likely to contain chemicals that can be harmful to you — and the materials themselves likely won’t perform well.

All-foam mattresses like these tend to trap your body heat throughout the night, which will be a nightmare to sleep on if you are a hot sleeper. Even if they use more up-to-date components, the fact that a bed in a box mattress is rolled, folded, and compressed means the foam layer (the comfort layer) will always suffer. Over time, that increases your chances of getting stuck with back, shoulder, and hip pain from the lack of support.

Every mattress component at Texas Mattress Makers has undergone and passed over 100,000 cycles of vigorous mattress testing from a third-party expert. This ensures that any mattress you purchase from us is of the highest quality possible.

3. The longevity

How long does a bed in a box last? Though some sources claim a bed in a box mattress will last 10 to 15 years, they will almost certainly not last as long as a quality traditional mattress.

Beds in a box have to be fully compressed and rolled to fit into their boxes. When a foam mattress is compressed, the structure of the components becomes weaker as it has to inflate again to be usable. According to Youval, this cuts the mattress’s lifespan in half before you even use it. Because the support structure is weakened, the mattress won’t be as comfortable as it would have been if you had bought a traditional mattress.

A weak mattress will not be able to support your body properly for long; therefore, you’ll have to replace your mattress sooner than you would like. This only costs you more time and money.

4. The cost

Some bed in a box mattresses are cheaper than traditional mattresses, which makes them attractive for consumers on a budget. However, as we mentioned earlier, you’ll likely pay more over time to replace poorly made mattresses in a box than you would on one good mattress.

So, how much does a mattress cost? Or rather, how much should you pay for a good quality mattress? You should invest in a mattress that will give you the best sleep possible. Regardless of your budget, prioritizing your sleep should be important to you, and you need a high-quality mattress to achieve great sleep.

At Texas Mattress Makers, we work hard to help keep the cost of all of our mattresses affordable even before they are on sale. Since we make all of our own mattresses in-house, we are able to pass on factory-direct pricing straight to our customers. Even our most luxurious mattress won’t bust your budget, and our budget mattress won’t bust your back. It’s a win-win.

5. The selection (or lack thereof)

If you shop from a bed in a box e-tailer, you will have little-to-no choices that are designed to be one-size-fits-all and this is a huge problem.

  • VERY limited selection: Most retailers only sell about three to four products for you to choose from which is not enough for you to find your perfect match. How can four products satisfy a wide range of sleepers?
  • Little to no variety in size and comfort level: Some sleepers need something more than just soft, medium, and firm. We provide six mattress comfort levels (ultra-soft, soft, medium, medium-firm, firm, and ultra-firm) to give our shoppers more variety to find their perfect feel.
  • No customization: Sometimes, what is offered is not what you need. Beds in a box are typically limited to 100% memory foam-variety mattresses so that they can be folded up and compressed. News flash: not everyone needs an all-foam mattress. We can customize mattresses to include the components you want to ensure a better night’s sleep.

Customers who like the feel of foam often fare better with a foam comfort layer that’s found in the top layer of a hybrid mattress — a mattress that combines the support of individually wrapped coils with the comfort of foam or latex. While some bed in a box e-tailers do sell hybrid mattresses, their selection is typically minimal. At Texas Mattress Makers, you’ll find the best budget hybrid mattress for your needs.

Split King vs. King Bed: How to Choose

Couple sleeping on split king bed

King mattresses have always been popular choices for couples, parents, and pet owners looking for more spacious surfaces. However, when purchasing a mattress, many shoppers have been toying with the possibility of investing in a split king-size mattress. If you haven’t heard of a split king mattress before, you might be wondering how it differs from a regular king bed.

What is a split king mattress? What’s the difference between king and split king beds? Which one is right for you?

The experts at Texas Mattress Makers outline everything you need to know about a split king vs king mattress. By the end of this article, you’ll not only know the difference between a king and split king, but you’ll have a better idea of what you need out of your mattress. If you think a split king or a king bed is right for you, Texas Mattress Makers will be ready to help you with your purchase. We carry split king mattresses as a standard size on our website, meaning you can add them to your cart easily and be enjoying your new split king in no time!

Key takeaways:

  • A split king mattress is the same size as a king-size mattress (76″ x 80″).
  • A split king mattress is made up of two Twin XL mattresses placed together in one bed frame, whereas a king mattress is one solid mattress.
  • Each side of a split king mattress can be customized with different feels and components to satisfy the individual’s needs. A king mattress has all of the same components throughout the bed.
  • A split king mattress is a great choice of bed if you want an adjustable mattress base to customize the positioning of each individual side.
  • We recommend split king mattresses over split queen mattresses because a split king will give you more surface area for you and your partner to sleep on.

What’s the difference between king and split king beds?

At first glance, a split king and a king mattress can look exactly the same, and they do on the surface. However, they are not manufactured the same way. Here are some key differences between a split king vs king mattress.

Construction

The primary difference between a split king bed and a king bed is in the way that they are constructed — a king bed has one solid mattress, while a split king bed consists of two Twin XL mattresses placed together in one bed frame. It’s called a “split king” because there’s a technical split between the two separate mattresses that are placed together, but don’t worry, you won’t feel a split in your mattress at all.

Is a split king the same size as a king? Yes, split king-size mattresses are roughly the same size as a king mattress, with the two Twin XL mattresses making up the same dimensions. This also means that you should be able to use king-size mattress foundations.

Split king vs king mattress dimensions

Although this is the standard size of a split king bed, Texas Mattress Makers can provide you with a custom size mattress if you prefer a different size or shape. This is the beauty of purchasing from the manufacturer!

Price

Is a split king more expensive than a king? Yes, but not by much. At Texas Mattress Makers, a split king mattress is typically $100 more than a king. Additionally, customized split king mattresses may be a bit more expensive, with the extra payment used to cover the cost of the component used in making your mattress.

Purpose

So, why would you want a split king mattress as opposed to a regular king mattress? What is the purpose of a split king? The main appeal of a split king mattress is that because the Twin XL mattresses used to make the bed are separate, each side can be customized to fit each sleeper’s needs. Or, each side can be adjusted individually on an adjustable bedframe for personal and individual comfort.

Let’s dive into why this is such a game-changer for sleepers everywhere.

Split king beds provide a solution for different sleeping needs

Good sleep is key to remaining healthy. So if sleeping next to your loved one begins to reduce the quality of your sleep, it’s extremely important to find a solution that works for both of you — unless you want to get a sleep divorce (which isn’t fun for anyone).

For some couples, upgrading the size of their bed is enough to do the trick, and that’s where a king-size bed can come in handy. A king-size bed can provide enough wiggle room for partners to sleep comfortably next to each other, even if one or both of them toss and turn.

However, partners who have vastly different sleeping needs (the need for a firm vs. soft mattress, hot vs. cold sleepers, etc.) may want to consider a split king bed.

Do couples like split king beds?

Absolutely! A split king is known as the best mattress for couples because each party’s comfort preferences and individual requirements can be accommodated in the same bed.

Split king beds are ideal for couples who…

  • desire extra room as they sleep
  • have very different sleeping needs
  • struggle with motion transfer
  • need an adjustable base to combat snoring or sleep apnea
  • want each side of their adjustable bed to move individually

How does a split king adjustable bed work?

Adjustable bases in particular are one of the main reasons why split king beds rose to popularity in the United States. If you purchase an adjustable base, each of you can have your side of the bed in whatever position you prefer! One partner can set the mattress so that it props them up as they read a book, while the other can set the mattress in a neutral position for a nap.

This is what makes split king mattresses so much better than flex top king mattresses. With a flex top, you can only adjust the top part of the mattress to lift your head up and down. A split king mattress paired with an adjustable base gives you full control of the customization of your bed positioning.

Investing in an adjustable base is not necessary if you have a split king, but it will elevate your sleep quality to new heights and provide a luxurious sleeping and lounging experience. It’s worth it.

Mattress Coils: Do Count and Quality Matter?

Individually wrapped coils inside of a mattress

There are many misconceptions that arise when discussing mattress coils. Does mattress coil count matter? Is a mattress better quality if it has more coils? If you have questions surrounding mattress coils, the experts at Texas Mattress Makers have the answers.

Coils are the support system in a mattress that directly affects the overall quality of your sleep. Ultimately, you should purchase a mattress with the components that make it most supportive and feel the most comfortable for your sleep needs. At Texas Mattress Makers, we believe that what’s inside of a mattress is important. That’s why we’re here to tell you everything you need to know about coil components, so that you can make an informed decision that will lead to your best night’s sleep.

Is coil count important in a mattress?

Yes and no. If a mattress has less than the typical number of coils, it may not be able to support your body properly, which can result in your mattress sinking. However, more coils do not equate to more support if the coils are made with low-quality materials. It has become a trend in the mattress industry that a high coil count is synonymous with quality, which is a false statement.

When selecting a mattress with coils (not all mattresses have them), pay attention to the materials used to create them. But as a rule of thumb, choosing a mattress with an average or higher number of coils is a great strategy to ensure proper support.

What is a good mattress coil count?

When discussing best practices, here is the generally accepted minimum amount of coils each mattress should have:

Mattress SizeCoil Count
Full300 – 500
Queen400 – 600
King480 – 800

At Texas Mattress Makers, we tend to use a slightly higher-than-average coil count. For example, our Hybrid Plus Mattress in its medium-firm feel has the following coil count:

Mattress SizeCoil Count
Full726
Queen888
King1,150

As a high-end example, all of our Quantum™ Coil mattresses in our Quantum™ Collection have the highest amount of mattress coils. The durability and long-lasting qualities of these coils are truly unmatched in the industry, but we’ll discuss that in more detail soon.

Mattress SizeCoil Count
Full1,575
Queen1,872
King2,384

It’s important to keep in mind that the quality of a mattress cannot be measured by its coil count alone, so no mattress coil count chart should be viewed as law. The quality of your mattress coils depends on how the coil is constructed, the coil gauge (thickness), and the coil durability.

As long as the coils are made of quality materials, they will be more durable and last longer. The quality of the coils can determine how easy it will be to break in a mattress, making it the most comfortable for you long-term.

Keep reading: How long does it take to break in a mattress?

Our mattress coil types: Tested for perfection

At Texas Mattress Makers, we carry different types of coil components so that you can find your perfect supportive match. All of our mattress components, including our numerous types of coils, have undergone over 100,000 cycles of rigorous mattress testing to ensure that they are of the highest quality possible.

After receiving our testing results, it was determined that our mattress collections exceeded industry standards. If you’re looking for the best coil spring mattress, Texas Mattress Makers has the most durable coils you can find.

Quantum™ Coil

Quantum™ Coil Mattress

First, we’ll start with our star: The Quantum™ Coil. Our Quantum™ Coil component features top-of-the-line and incredibly resilient micro-pocketed coils that are each housed in pockets of fabric and that can move independently while keeping their shape.

You can find this component in our Quantum™ Mattress and Quantum™ Natural Mattress.

The diameter of a Quantum™ coil is much smaller than your average coil. This allows for mattresses with our Quantum™ coils to house 200% more coils to provide more support than the average mattress can. Every mattress in the Quantum™ Collection provides unmatched support, motion isolation, air circulation, and luxurious comfort to every sleeper.

Our Quantum™ Coil component has been proven through testing to be stronger, more resilient, and longer lasting than other types of coils in the industry. These coils are so strong in fact, that we decided to put them to the ultimate test by running over them with trucks to see how they’d perform.

In this video our mattress expert Noah Meicler runs over the Quantum™ Coil component with a 6,000-pound truck, and then does it again with a 26,000-pound truck

We say that if you purchase a Quantum™ Coil mattress, you are purchasing your “forever mattress.” The coil will never break down, allowing you to get the most supportive and luxurious sleep for the rest of your life.

Most Supportive Coil in the Industry

Individually Wrapped Coil

Individually wrapped coils

Individually wrapped coils are a component that features separate coils each encased in their own individual pocket of cloth. Similar to the Quantum™ Coil, the individual pocket allows the coil to respond to pressure independently and more accurately to different parts of the body, which can limit motion transfer and provide pressure point relief for a more comfortable, undisturbed sleep. The coils also defer heat naturally, making them ideal for hot sleepers.

This type of coil is mostly present in our award-winning and best-selling hybrid mattresses found in our Hybrid Plus Collection. Our high-performing comfort components such as our High-Resilience Foam and all-natural latex found in this collection, were proven to be superior to other lines and will increase the durability, longevity, and comfort of your mattress. Our Essential Collection also has mattresses made with individually wrapped coils. These mattresses are ideal for people who want a supportive and comfortable mattress for an unbeatable price.

If you’re looking for a mattress that can offer personalized support with top-tier comfort, a hybrid mattress might be right for you.

Open Coil

Texas Mattress Makers open coil component

Our open coil component—also called innerspring or bonnell coil components — are interconnected and typically hourglass-shaped. This is the traditional way mattresses used to be made. A mattress made of open coils is better suited for children and teens but not for adults as the coils are not designed to support the full weight of an adult body.

Open coil mattresses are typically less expensive, making them a great choice for growing children. We do provide a line of youth mattresses for children and teens who can have a top-quality mattress accompany them as they grow.

In summary, you should judge your mattress coils by material, quality, and durability — and, in some cases, coil count. What coil will suit your needs best depends on factors including your body type, your preferences, and what type of support and comfort you need to get the best sleep possible.

At Texas Mattress Makers, all of our coil components are crafted with locally sourced materials that are of the highest quality possible. Many of our components, including the Quantum™ Coil and our High-Resilience Foam, surpassed industry standards when tested, meaning you will get a long-lasting, durable mattress that will stay comfortable for years to come.

Texas Mattress Makers is one of the top custom mattress makers in Texas, meaning we craft high-quality, handmade mattresses that suit your individual sleep needs. Since our mattresses are made factory-direct, you only pay for the components. That is the Texas Mattress Makers difference.

What is the Difference Between Full and Queen Mattresses?

Beautifully made bed with white covers

Let’s set the scene: you’re ready to purchase a new mattress for your home. Before you even step foot in the mattress store, ask yourself, ‘Which size mattress is best for me?” and “Which size would work best in my space?”

You remember that queen mattresses are the most popular size but are unsure if one will fit well in that particular room. Then you notice the full size mattress. Is the full the same as a Twin XL mattress? Will that be big enough? What’s the difference between full and queen mattresses? This is so confusing!

While these two mattress sizes may look similar, they are not the same and can serve different functions in your home. The mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to help you distinguish the difference between full and queen mattresses and how to choose which size will suit your room best.

Difference 1: The size

We’ll start with the most obvious difference between full and queen mattresses: the size. If you were to place a full and a queen mattress side-by-side, you may not be able to determine the difference right away. Let’s look at a full.

What is a full size mattress? Also referred to as a “double bed,” a full mattress is wider than a Twin XL mattress (although it is the same length) but is a bit smaller than a queen, making it a more compact option. So, how much bigger is a queen than a full? To answer that question, let’s take a look at the queen vs full dimensions.

At Texas Mattress Makers, a full mattress measures 53” in width and 75” in length, and a queen mattress measures 60” in width and 80” in length. While these numbers might look close, it’s shocking how much more space a queen can provide with a few extra square inches built-in. Queen mattresses also tend to be a little taller than full mattresses.

Now that we’ve discussed the size difference between a queen and a full mattress let’s decipher what type of sleepers would benefit from which mattress.

Difference 2: The sleeper

One of the most important factors when choosing between a full vs queen size is what type of sleeper or how many sleepers are ideal for each size.

Who is a full-size bed good for?

The following types of sleepers would benefit from a full mattress:

  • Single adults
  • Children, teenagers, and college students
  • Couples who don’t mind sleeping close together
  • Single sleepers who share a bed with their pet
  • Sleepers who live in an apartment or confined spaces
  • Guests

Full mattresses are ideal for smaller sleepers and smaller spaces. They’re the perfect upgrade from a twin mattress as they provide more space but can still fit comfortably in all bedrooms. Speaking of small, full beds can be the best mattresses for kids because they can provide a little extra space, giving your child the opportunity to grow with them. Purchasing a full mattress as their first big boy or big girl mattress can be a smart investment as it can follow them through college (saving you money)!

So, can two adults sleep on a full mattress? They can certainly try, but we can’t guarantee they’ll be comfortable. While most adults can squeeze themselves and their partner onto a full mattress, there will be no room to move around. If you’re a sleeper that tosses and turns, a full mattress will be your partner’s worst nightmare. Not to mention, if you’re over 6 feet tall, your feet will likely be hanging off the end of the bed. For this reason, we typically recommend couples sleep on a queen size mattress.

What is the advantage of a queen size bed?

The following types of sleepers would benefit from a queen mattress:

  • Couples
  • Couples with pets or children
  • Guests
  • Solo sleepers who want extra room
  • Those who live in apartments with more space
  • Homeowners

In our opinion, queen mattresses are the most popular because they are the best bed size for couples. Because approximately 55% of mattress purchases are married couples and 56% are homeowners, the popularity of the queen mattress makes sense. Almost any sleeper can fit in a queen size bed and feel comfortable, with or without a partner next to them.

You can find the best queen mattress for your needs at Texas Mattress Makers.

Difference 3: The price

Many factors are considered when pricing a mattress, including size, whether you buy online or directly from the mattress store, and the materials used to construct the mattress. While full beds usually cost a little less than queen beds, the costs don’t differ drastically — at least not at Texas Mattress Makers.

How much does a queen mattress cost?

The average price of a queen mattress is around $1,100, and a good starting price point for a full mattress is around $650. If you are on a strict budget, we can find you a top-quality mattress in any size you need that will suit all of your preferences. Texas Mattress Makers customers have the benefit of missing out on overhead costs, no matter what type of mattress you purchase.

How Long Does it Take to Fall Asleep?

Woman asleep in a dark room

Many sleepers understand the struggle of not being able to fall asleep when they desperately need to. Whether you stay up staring at your ceilings for hours on end or can’t seem to get comfortable no matter what, understanding the time it takes to fall asleep — or the time it should take you to fall asleep — may help you determine if you’re facing sleep troubles.

So, on average, how long does it take to fall asleep? The average time to fall asleep is usually under 30 minutes; however, according to an article by the Sleep Foundation, a healthy adult should be able to fall asleep in 10-15 minutes. But what if it takes you a longer or even shorter amount of time to fall asleep than that?

If you struggle to fall asleep, your “sleep latency” may be off — don’t worry, we’ll explain. The mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to discuss how you can fall asleep in a timely manner to get the best sleep quality possible.

What is sleep latency?

Sleep latency is a fancy term for the period of time it takes your body to transition from being fully awake to asleep. Each person may experience a different sleep latency, but it’s important to fall asleep within a healthy time range to ensure you are getting the full night’s rest your body deserves.

How long should I sleep at night? In our article “How much sleep do I really need?”, we state that a healthy adult needs at least 7-9 hours of sleep every night for their brains and bodies to properly function.

How long should it take a person to fall asleep?

As stated above, you should be able to fall asleep within 10-15 minutes of lying down. If it takes you significantly longer than that, it could be an indication of underlying sleep disorders or poor sleep habits.

There are several factors that can influence how quickly you fall asleep:

  • Sleep patterns: Your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm, plays a significant role in determining when you feel tired and how quickly you can fall asleep. This is why sticking to a consistent sleep schedule is incredibly important to keep your circadian rhythm on track each day.
  • Sleep environment: A comfortable and quiet sleep environment can help you fall asleep more easily. Bright lights, warm temperatures, loud noises, or a bad mattress can make it difficult to catch those lovely z’s.
  • Stress and anxiety: How does stress affect sleep? High levels of stress and anxiety can keep your mind active, making it difficult to relax and fall asleep. When you’re stressed, you can’t sleep, and when you can’t sleep, you only feel more stressed.
  • Diet and exercise: What you eat and how much you exercise can also impact your sleep latency. Exercise and healthier foods can increase energy and reduce stress and daytime sleepiness so that you can fall asleep easily come nighttime. Learn more about sleep and exercise.
  • Bedtime routine: Establishing a consistent bedtime routine can signal to your body that it’s time to wind down and prepare for sleep. Warm baths, stretches, meditation, or reading a book are great options for optimal relaxation.

What causes poor sleep latency?

Struggling to fall asleep or falling asleep too quickly can signal sleep problems or poor lifestyle choices. Here are a few examples of reasons why you may struggle to fall asleep in a healthy time frame.

Sleep deprivation

If you tend to fall asleep very soon after your head hits the pillow, you may be experiencing sleep deprivation. In our blog discussing signs you aren’t getting enough sleep, we outline that it can be hard to remain in control of your body when you experience sleep deprivation. Failing to get the quality, full night’s rest that you need to function every night can have serious impacts on your day-to-day life.

Falling asleep too quickly, usually within five minutes of lying down, or dozing off to sleep throughout the day are clear signs of sleep deprivation.

Sleep disorders

Insomnia and sleep apnea are two of the most common sleep disorders that mess with your ability to fall asleep. Those who struggle with insomnia often experience prolonged sleep latency (meaning they can’t fall asleep within 30 minutes) and may wake up frequently during the night. Insomnia can be caused by stress, anxiety, medical conditions, or poor sleep habits. Insomnia can be treated with medication and lifestyle changes to get the sleep your body and mind need to thrive.

Sleep apnea is a quite dangerous yet common sleep disorder that affects your ability to breathe as you sleep. Waking up gasping for air during the night due to restricted airflow to your lungs can cause sleep interruptions — beyond the immediate risk of oxygen deprivation — and prevent you from getting the deep, restorative sleep essential for your body and mind. Seeking medical attention and investing in an adjustable mattress base to customize your positioning can help alleviate these symptoms.

Poor sleep habits

Poor habits regarding sleep hygiene can be a large contributor to poor sleep latency. A few examples of poor sleep habits include but are not limited to:

  • Consuming caffeine too close to bedtime
  • Consuming alcohol too close to bedtime
  • Too much blue light exposure before bed
  • Exercising too close to bedtime
  • Cultivating an unhealthy sleep environment (too warm, uncomfortable bed, etc.)
  • Napping excessively throughout the day

Bad mattress

Trying to fall asleep on an uncomfortable mattress is enough to keep anyone up at night. Think of your mattress as the foundation of your sleep quality: if you’re sleeping on a poor-quality mattress, your sleep — and in turn, your health — will suffer. Investing in a high-quality mattress can improve sleep latency, helping you fall asleep and enjoy more restful sleep.

If any of the factors above apply to you, it may be time to see a health professional and upgrade your mattress to a high-quality one that will suit your needs.

Tips to improve sleep latency

From our experts, here are some tips on what to do if you can’t fall asleep and developing healthy sleep habits:

  • Invest in a high-quality mattress (from Texas Mattress Makers, of course)
  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule every day (even on weekends)
  • Optimize your sleep environment
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Avoid vigorous exercise in the evenings
  • Avoid electronics at least two hours before bed
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine
  • Try a guided meditation
  • Seek medical attention to combat sleep disorders

Simple lifestyle changes and a mattress upgrade can make a significant difference in the quality of your sleep. Incorporating these habits can lead to falling asleep faster and enjoying more restful, uninterrupted sleep each night.

Falling Asleep Is Easy with a Texas Mattress Makers Mattress

Issues with sleep latency can stem from multiple factors; however, many sleepers ignore the fact that they may be struggling to fall asleep in a healthy manner because of their mattress. If you were to ask us, “How long does it take to fall asleep on a mattress from Texas Mattress Makers?” we would tell you that you should have no problem falling asleep on a bed from our factory.

Best Pillow for Stomach Sleepers

Woman sleeping on her stomach in a white bed

Contrary to popular belief, most stomach sleepers don’t sleep face-down on their mattresses through the night — unless their bed is a massage table with a built-in face cradle. Stomach sleepers most often sleep with their necks turned to one side. This can make finding the best pillow for stomach sleepers tricky if you’re unaware of what you need from a pillow.

If you are a stomach sleeper, finding the right pillow is extremely important. Without the proper support from your mattress and pillow, stomach sleeping can put extra pressure on your spine, leading to pain and discomfort in your neck and lower back.

If you sleep on your stomach and often wake up with a crick in your neck or pain in your lower back, you’re experiencing bad pillow symptoms. In other words, you’re not getting the best sleep possible due to a bad pillow. So, how can a stomach sleeper sleep better? Just as you should prioritize finding the best mattress for stomach sleepers, you should invest in a quality pillow that is made to accommodate your sleeping position.

Stomach sleepers: you can find everything you need at Texas Mattress Makers. Our experts will match you with a mattress and a pillow that will allow you to continue sleeping on your tummy comfortably so you can wake up pain-free.

Should stomach sleepers sleep without a pillow?

Stomach sleeping is the only position that does not always require a pillow. Why is this? When you lie on your belly, your spine is not in a neutral position, which causes strain as you sleep. On top of that, your neck has to be completely turned to one side so that you can breathe. If you use a pillow as a stomach sleeper, your neck can often be craned at an unnatural angle. Sleeping without a pillow can actually put less strain on your neck as you sleep.

However, this is not always recommended for every sleeper.

The point of a pillow is to support your head and neck as you sleep, closing any gaps between your head and the mattress to keep your spine aligned. Spine alignment is the key to waking up without any aches and pains. If you find the right pillow for you as a stomach sleeper, you can get the quality rest your body needs.

Here is how you can find the best pillow for stomach sleepers.

Upgrade Your Pillow

What kind of pillow should stomach sleepers use?

When shopping for a pillow, it’s important to understand what you need from a pillow as a stomach sleeper. Let’s be clear: there is not one sole best pillow for stomach sleepers. Different kinds of pillows can help you get the comfort and support you need. Therefore, you need to find a pillow that will promote proper spine alignment and keep your head and neck supported to minimize pain.

When choosing a pillow for yourself as a stomach sleeper, consider the following features:

  • Height: How thick should a pillow be for stomach sleepers? A thin pillow that is no taller than three inches is ideal for keeping your neck and spine aligned as you sleep. This way, your neck won’t be at an unnatural angle that can cause discomfort.
  • Firmness: Is soft or firm better for stomach sleepers? A softer pillow with healthy support will conform to your head and be comfortable for your face. Remember, support is still necessary for spinal alignment!
  • Materials: The word “breathable” should guide you when choosing a pillow. Because your nose and mouth will be in contact with the pillow, opting for cleaner and hypoallergenic materials such as latex or bamboo can minimize irritation and allergens for better breathing. Cooling technology can also be beneficial to keep you as comfortable as possible.

If you were to search for the types of pillows a stomach sleeper should get, you might see suggestions like “try a wedge-shaped pillow” or “add a second pillow under your pelvis!” In our expert opinion, these actions aren’t necessary if you find the right pillow.

Although there is not one single best pillow for stomach sleepers with back pain to solve all of your problems, finding a pillow that suits you, your sleeping position, and your needs can alleviate pain and help you stay comfortable all night long.

Queen size mattresses are a popular choice for couples, solo sleepers, or individuals with pets or children because they provide a great amount of sleeping surface area without taking up too much space in the room.

When it comes to purchasing a queen mattress, it’s common for buyers to get overwhelmed during the shopping experience. If you’re looking for a top-quality, affordable queen mattress, Texas Mattress Makers has everything you need to find the perfect mattress for you in your budget.

Sleep Like Royalty

How big is a queen size mattress?

Our queen mattress dimensions are 60″ by 80”, which is the average size of a queen mattress. While some people confuse the full vs queen size dimensions, a queen mattress is six inches wider and five inches longer than a full mattress.

Queen mattress infographic

While a full mattress is mostly used as a bed for young children and dorm rooms, a queen size is a great option for couples or solo sleepers who want more room but don’t have the space for a king-size mattress. For example, a queen can make the best guest room mattress size because it can fit a single person or a couple comfortably and leave room for other furniture.

What is a good price to pay for a queen mattress?

How much is a queen size mattress? According to the Sleep Foundation, the average price of a mid-tier queen mattress is around $1,000-$1,500.

When pricing queen size mattresses, other mattress stores typically take the type of mattress into consideration as well as the brand of the bed — meaning, you might be paying extra for the brand name of the mattress. This is not the case at Texas Mattress Makers.

Our queen mattresses are priced based on the materials used to make the mattress. For example, mattresses that use special materials such as natural latex or our top-of-the-line Quantum™ Coil component will cost more than a hybrid mattress with coilsl or basic memory foam mattress. However, because we carry a wide variety of mattress types in our showroom and online, you can always find a mattress that will suit all of your needs without breaking your budget.

Best Pillow for Side Sleepers

Woman sleeping on her side and smiling

If you’re a side sleeper, you may not know how important it is to have the right pillow (hint: it’s incredibly important)! However, finding the best pillow for side sleepers can be tricky if you don’t know what to look for.

When you sleep on your side, there is going to be a gap between your neck and the mattress; in fact, closing that gap to support the head is the sole purpose of a pillow. The main goal for a side sleeper’s pillow is to keep your head, neck, and spine in a straight line to promote proper spine alignment. This alignment helps to:

  • Reduce pressure points
  • Prevent shoulder and neck pain
  • Help you to fall asleep faster
  • Help you to stay asleep longer
  • Improve overall sleep quality

If you are a side sleeper who regularly wakes up with aches and pains or discomfort in your neck, shoulders, and upper back, your pillow could be the problem. These bad pillow symptoms can only be solved by getting the right pillow for you to accommodate your side sleeping.

In this article, our mattress experts will discuss why side sleepers need specific pillows and how you can find the best pillow for your needs.

Continue reading: What is the healthiest way to sleep?

What kind of pillow should side sleepers use?

Similar to when you shop for the best mattress for side sleepers, you need to understand which pressure points are touching your pillow and your mattress. When you sleep on your side, your shoulder, hip, knees, and ankles will be in direct contact with the mattress; whereas your ear and neck will be in contact with the pillow. This will determine what type of pillow and what materials will alleviate pressure on these areas and promote healthy spinal alignment.

When choosing a pillow for yourself, consider the following features:

  • Height: Do side sleepers need thicker pillows? A medium-height pillow is recommended for side sleepers so that their neck doesn’t bend unnaturally one way or the other, leading to discomfort and pain over time. When trying out a pillow, lay down on the mattress with the pillow and see if your neck feels neutral and aligned.
  • Firmness: Should side sleeper pillows be hard or soft? Your pillow should be firm enough to maintain its shape but soft enough to be comfortable for your head and ears. For most sleepers, firmness is a personal preference.
  • Shape: Curved, domed, or even pillows in the shape of a cube have been known to benefit side sleepers. In our expert opinion, it’s better to focus on how the pillow is made than subscribing to specific shapes.
  • Material: Memory foam, shredded foam, or latex are great options and each provide their own benefits:
Memory FoamShredded FoamLatex
Conforms to the shape of the head and neck while providing consistent support throughout the nightOffers adjustable support and customizable height and firmness so you can find the most comfortable option for youLatex pillows are resilient, durable, breathable, and keep their shape for years to come.

There is not one single best pillow for side sleepers with neck and shoulder pain, but by finding a pillow that suits you, your sleeping position, and your needs, you can alleviate pain and stay comfortable all night long.

Best pillow for side sleepers: Our expert recommendations

With so many options out there to choose from, it can be tough to choose which pillow is perfect for you. If you need a little guidance, our experts are here to recommend our two best-selling pillows that can alleviate neck pain, provide proper support, and help side sleepers get the quality rest they deserve:

The Comfort Rest Pillow

Those who say the perfect pillow doesn’t exist have never seen our Comfort Rest Pillow. This hybrid pillow by BedTech features thousands of embedded micro cushions that mold to the head and neck to keep your spine aligned all night long. The inside layer is made of shredded memory foam which allows you to customize the height and firmness of the pillow to your preferences, making it a perfect choice for side sleepers.

The Cooling Pillow

Pillows can trap your body heat that comes from your head which can lead to stuffy and uncomfortable sleep. Sound familiar? Then you might need our cooling pillow! Made with Cool Touch fiber technology, The Cooling Pillow is a breathable and hypoallergenic pillow designed for hot sleepers who need help cooling off at night. Aside from its cooling properties, this pillow features a removable two-inch high-density foam insert so that you can customize the height and feel of your pillow to your liking! Side sleepers and hot sleepers can find relief for years to come.

Have Sweeter Dreams at Texas Mattress Makers

Most side sleepers don’t understand how truly important investing in the right pillow is for your overall sleep quality. It can be the main difference between getting a good night’s sleep and waking up with aches and pains, which no one wants.

While there might not be one sole best pillow for side sleepers, our mattress experts can help you choose a pillow that will support your head and neck while alleviating pressure for long-lasting comfort. As a side sleeper, it’s also important to invest in the right mattress to accommodate your sleeping position. If you wake up with aches and pains, your mattress is likely not adequately providing enough pressure point relief to keep your hips and shoulders comfortable.
