What is a Natural Latex Mattress?

What is a Natural Latex Mattress?

What is a natural latex mattress? As one of the least known components used in mattresses, you may have not heard of a latex mattress before — and that’s okay. Our mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to answer all of your questions about natural latex mattresses.

At Texas Mattress Makers, all of our natural latex components are all-natural latex made using the Talalay latex method. This means that our latex mattresses are made with 100% natural latex, not a synthetic blend. We do not use any chemicals during the mattress manufacturing process so that our customers can sleep on non-toxic, handmade mattresses for a restful sleeping experience.

What is a latex mattress made of?

Latex is a liquid that comes from the sap of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis, also known as the Pará rubber tree) that are typically found in South America. Once the sap is extracted from the tree, the liquid latex is whipped, poured into a mattress mold, and baked until it forms a soft mattress material that is frozen and then heated to set its final consistency.

As mentioned earlier, Texas Mattress Makers uses all-natural latex components made from the Talalay latex method. We get our latex from Talalay Global, which is the world’s largest producer of latex and the only manufacturer in the United States. Every latex mattress bought from Texas Mattress Makers is ethically sourced and made in the USA.

Latex is a luxury, clean component that provides customers with the ultimate plush feeling in a mattress.  Latex sleeps cooler as well and helps provide for a more supportive sleep so that your mattress will last longer.

Types of natural latex

We believe not all mattresses are one-size-fits-all. Though latex has many benefits that can suit many sleepers, one type of latex may be better for your needs than another. That’s why Texas Mattress Makers carries different types of Talalay latex components.

Celsion latex

Celsion latex is our softest latex and is a great option for back and side sleepers who may sleep hot during the night. The Celsion latex layer features an open cell structure that lifts your body as you sleep and promotes airflow, reducing body temperature and helping you sleep cooler in the Texas heat.

Copper-infused latex

Copper-infused latex has a medium plush feel and offers natural, anti-inflammatory properties that relieve aches and pains associated with arthritis, and is typically suitable for any sleeping position. The rubber cell structure of this latex gently lifts your body and helps to limit mattress sagging.

Graphite-infused latex

Graphite-infused latex is our medium-firm to firm latex and it uses natural graphite minerals to provide more cushion with enhanced durability and strength which is ideal for back and stomach sleepers. The open cell structure promotes blood circulation for healthy pressure relief and airflow for a cooler night’s sleep.

You can read more about each component and its properties in our Latex Mattress Components Buying Guide

What is the benefit of a latex mattress?

Latex is a component that can solve a wide variety of sleep issues. Whether you need a latex comfort layer for that “just right” feel or a latex base layer for sturdy support, latex is a versatile component to look out for. For example, natural latex mattresses can be ideal for many side and back sleepers, or sleepers who don’t like the “cradling” feeling of traditional memory foam but need to relieve pressure in their joints, which can be provided by a softer material in the comfort layer of their mattress.

Some natural latex mattress benefits include:

  • Eco-friendly
  • A clean and inherently natural component
  • Relieves pressure as you sleep
  • Highly durable
  • Optimal support for all sleeping positions
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Breathable structures for cooler sleep
  • And more!

Due to its many benefits, all-natural latex can come with a heftier price point than more traditional mattress components. However, we believe that luxurious sleep shouldn’t break the bank. At Texas Mattress Makers, we cut out the middleman in our mattress distributing processes so that you only have to pay for the components you choose. This means no excessive storage and labor fees. And, if you are concerned with mattress recycling in Houston, we provide free mattress removal with our white-glove mattress delivery service.

Texas Mattress Makers carries all-natural latex mattresses

If you’re looking to buy a latex mattress, trust that a mattress expert from Texas Mattress Makers can help you to find your perfect match. Shopping with Texas Mattress Makers allows you to find a high-quality, natural latex mattress for a reasonable price.

Is There an Alternative to Memory Foam Mattresses?

Is There an Alternative to Memory Foam Mattresses?

Is there an alternative to memory foam mattresses? Of course, there is! As expert mattress makers, we understand that memory foam mattresses aren’t perfect for everyone. For example, memory foam can sometimes have an off-putting chemical-like smell. Because memory foam is a man-made product, some mattress manufacturers create them with harsh chemicals that can release off-gassing or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that leave a persistent odor in the mattress for weeks at a time.

That is not the case with non-toxic memory foam mattresses made by Texas Mattress Makers. We still like to provide alternatives to memory foam mattresses for individuals who sleep hot, hate the body-hugging or cradling feeling of a memory foam mattress, but still crave comfort and pressure relief as they sleep.

Explore our recommendations for alternatives to memory foam mattresses that are also listed in our memory foam buying guide

Hybrid mattresses vs. memory foam

If you aren’t keen on memory foam mattresses, a hybrid mattress may be the answer to your prayers. What is the difference between a memory foam and hybrid mattress? The biggest difference between hybrid mattresses and memory foam mattresses is coils — hybrid mattresses have coils, memory foam mattresses don’t.

What is a hybrid mattress made of? Hybrid mattresses are “hybrids” of two main mattress components — the support layer (the base of the mattress) and the comfort layer (the mattress top). Texas Mattress Makers makes these mattresses with an individually wrapped coil mattress component as the support layer, whereas memory foam mattresses are made up of purely foam components. If you want a mattress with a bit more emphasis on support, a hybrid mattress may be a better fit for you than traditional memory foam.

Many of the foam alternatives mentioned in this article are used only in our hybrid mattresses.

High-resilience foam

With its more buoyant feel, high-resilience foam — called HR foam in our showroom — mimics many properties of latex that keep sleepers from sinking into their mattress (note: memory foam has a reputation for that sinking feeling). With a plush feel and superior support, high-resilience foam is a great alternative to memory foam mattresses.

  • Popular pickSanta Barbara Deluxe Mattress: This mattress is made with a firm, supportive individually wrapped coil unit and a high-resilience foam in the comfort layer for pressure point relief without the feeling of sinking.

Serene foam

If you’re looking for a mattress with full-body support and cloud-like comfort, let us introduce you to Serene foam — a newer, luxurious, and more advanced version of polyurethane foam (memory foam) that is used in the comfort layer of the mattress.

This more advanced version of memory foam helps with temperature regulation throughout the mattress for a night of cooler sleep, perfect for hot sleepers.

We have two Serene foam mattresses to choose from:

  • Venice Plush Mattress: This ultra-soft Serene foam mattress combines signature handmade quality with high-tech innovations for unrivaled comfort, cooling, and support.
  • Milan Serene Foam Select Mattress: Combining luxury materials for the perfect balance of soft comfort and restorative support, the Milan Serene Foam Select provides a memory foam feel with added cooling and support from Quantum® Coil and Serene foam layers.

Latex

While not technically a foam, latex is a natural, eco-friendly, luxury product that shares many of the same qualities as memory foam, but has a more buoyant feel. Our latex mattresses allow the sleeper to experience support, comfort, and breathability together. If you’re looking for a latex mattress in Houston, all of our latex mattresses are made using the CertiPUR-US® certified, all-natural Talalay latex method and are cooling-compatible for comfortable sleep.

  • Top-sellerGeneva Copper Latex Hybrid Select Mattress: This medium-feeling latex hybrid mattress couples cooling comfort and optimal support for a luxuriously balanced sleep experience that provides refreshing, restorative sleep in any position.

  • Best-in-classFlorence Dual Latex Select Mattress: Designed for pain relief and superior support, the Florence Dual Latex Mattress is a medium-soft mattress made of copper-infused latex and phase-changing celsion latex that provides ultimate comfort and durability.

High-density foam

Our high-density foam is just that: high-density. An increase in density increases the firmness of the foam, making this foam an ideal base layer for support in our 100% memory foam mattresses. However, high-density foam can also be used in other layers of the mattress, including the comfort layer, to provide a medium-firm to firm feel and great lumbar support.

  • Everest Memory Foam Xtreme Firm Mattress: The Everest mattress features a super high-density foam core support layer that offers superior support and durability for back and stomach sleepers, without sacrificing comfort.

  • Noah Allen Plush Mattress: The combination of gel-infused and high-density memory foam provides a plush feeling while individually wrapped coils keep you supported and aligned.

Looking for an alternative to memory foam mattresses? Texas Mattress Makers has what you need.

Memory foam, though popular, can come with a few cons. That’s why we found it important to create alternatives to memory foam mattresses that suit a wider variety of sleepers. If any of the beds suggested above sound like a great fit for you, or you’d like to try our mattresses out for yourself, stop by a showroom location to speak with an expert. We are here to help you find the perfect mattress to suit your needs.

Don’t settle for a mattress that isn’t right for you. Shop online by comfort level, mattress type, mattress size, and budget, or come and visit any of our convenient Houston-area locations today to try out our foam mattress alternatives.

Can a Non-Toxic Mattress Still Smell? New Mattress Smell FAQs

Can a Non-Toxic Mattress Still Smell? New Mattress Smell FAQs

If you purchase a new mattress from Texas Mattress Makers, you are purchasing a non-toxic mattress, meaning that we do not use any chemicals during the manufacturing process. However, some mattresses, including memory foam and foam alternative mattresses, can come with what we call a “new mattress smell” — in other words, your mattress smells like chemicals when you take it out of the bag.

This is an area of concern for many customers, and understandably so. The mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to answer frequently asked questions regarding the new mattress smell coming from a non-toxic mattress.

If you have any further questions regarding your new mattress, please do not hesitate to call a representative at 713-341-6252 to discuss your concerns.

Q: My memory foam mattress smells like chemicals. Why is this?

Memory foam is a man-made material, and unfortunately, many manufacturers who make memory foam mattresses — like certain bed-in-a-box brands — have gained and earned a reputation for using harsh and potentially hazardous chemicals during their manufacturing process. These mattresses are sold at cheaper prices than those made in the USA, Canada, or Europe, but are typically not the safest option for you to sleep on. At Texas Mattress Makers, we do not use foams with these harsh chemicals. All of our foam and foam alternatives are manufactured with Certi-PUR standards.

Mattress off-gassing

If you do purchase a memory foam or foam alternative mattress, please be aware that mattress off-gassing may occur. Off-gassing is when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are present in the foam begin to break down causing a chemical-like odor. VOCs can include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), formaldehyde, benzene, methylene chloride, toluene, trichloroethane, naphthalene, and perfluorocarbons. This also happens in new cars giving them that “new car smell.” If you notice this scent in your mattress, find a place to air it out.

If you purchase a mattress at Texas Mattress Makers, you will not need to worry about these issues. We make our mattresses in-house using only safe products that are CertiPUR-US® certified. You can find a non-toxic mattress for less money and for better quality at our showroom locations.

Q: Is the smell from a new mattress toxic?

The short answer is no, the new mattress smell is not harmful to people — however, according to Amerisleep, a small percentage of mattress owners reported having difficulty breathing, headaches, nausea, eye and throat irritation, and asthma after experiencing mattress off-gassing. It’s not dangerous, just extremely unpleasant to deal with. Be sure to open new mattresses in a ventilated area to avoid these symptoms.

Q: Can a non-toxic mattress still smell?

Though our non-toxic mattresses are not manufactured with any chemicals, there is still a chance that the foam mattresses will have a chemical-like scent when first opened. The glue that we use to hand-make all of our mattresses can leave a residual smell, but this scent will dissipate in a few days. Your new mattress is safe to sleep on!

If you purchase a new mattress with us and are concerned about the scent, please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have by calling 713-341-6252. We are honest and upfront about the materials we use in our non-toxic mattresses. This is the Texas Mattress Makers difference

Q: How long does it take for memory foam to stop smelling?

The new mattress smell that may come with our non-toxic mattresses will go away after a couple of days or less. However, if you purchase a mattress from another manufacturer, the chemical scent will likely linger for a few weeks. Though the scent is not harmful, it can make it very difficult to fall asleep. Imagine having your quality of sleep ruined by a chemical-like odor for weeks! A new mattress is supposed to improve your quality of sleep, not make it worse. This is why purchasing a non-toxic mattress is a huge advantage — you’ll sleep harder, faster.

Texas Mattress Makers provides affordable & non-toxic mattresses

Texas Mattress Makers produces high-quality, handmade, non-toxic mattresses. If you are interested in a memory foam or foam alternative mattress that is made without chemicals and is CertiPUR-US® certified, check out our memory foam buying guide to see which mattress would be a perfect fit for you.

Is an Adjustable Memory Foam Mattress Right for You?

Is an Adjustable Memory Foam Mattress Right for You?

A basic memory foam mattress can be beneficial for sleepers who need help relieving pressure as they sleep, but an adjustable memory foam mattress can offer you more benefits. Given how critical sleep is to our health, a bed is so much more than just a surface for sleeping. With people spending more time indoors and working from home, you may find yourself needing more from your bed. Let’s face it, your couch may offer the same comfort and support that your mattress does. If you are looking for a place to relax, work, and sleep all in one, an adjustable memory foam mattress* may be the right choice for you.

*Texas Mattress Makers offers adjustable bases that can be compatible with select mattresses. Please see our adjustable-friendly mattress page for more information.

The benefits of an adjustable memory foam mattress

At Texas Mattress Makers, we want you to achieve the best night’s rest regardless of your unique sleeping needs or situation. Here are a few reasons why adding an adjustable base to your memory foam mattress may be the right fit for you.

Can be adjusted to your preferred position

One of the biggest benefits of adjustable bed frames is the ability to adjust your mattress to the exact position that you want for any situation. Do you like to prop your feet up while you watch TV? Do you wish to raise your head and neck to read in bed? These are all possible with an adjustable bed frame. The ability to raise and lower the head and foot of your mattress base can also give you the flexibility to find the best sleeping position for you. This way, you can get optimal comfort and support anytime you want to use your bed.

Can satisfy an array of sleep needs

Adjustable beds can be worth the extra cost, especially for individuals struggling with edema, sleep apnea, or acid reflux. For most of these individuals, the standard flat surface of a mattress does not suit their specific needs. Those struggling with acid reflux need to sleep at an incline with their heads raised to minimize symptoms as they snooze. Similarly, anyone who has sleep apnea may be keeping partners awake. An adjustable mattress allows you to sleep soundly in a position that is comfortable and helpful.

Can be beneficial to a wide variety of sleepers

An adjustable memory foam mattress can be useful for relieving pressure in your joints, providing minimal partner disturbance, accommodating to every sleeping position, and allowing you to work, relax, and sleep comfortably. Regardless of your age or comfort preference, your bed can be a place for relaxation and productivity with an adjustable memory foam mattress.

Adjustable beds allow you to try new sleeping positions or customize how your bed functions without investing in an entirely new base. They can help you achieve many different goals to satisfy your unique sleep needs. We offer adjustable-friendly mattresses and adjustable bases, complete with massage functions and a voice-activated app without too much extra cost.

Natural Latex Mattress Benefits

Natural Latex Mattress Benefits

Have you heard of the natural latex mattress benefits? Most customers are unaware that an all-natural latex mattress can be a great investment for your quality of sleep. Why is this? Latex mattresses, especially those made of natural latex, are a luxury product known for offering a mix of support, comfort, breathability, and eco-friendly options.

While they do come with many benefits for the sleeper, they are a bit more costly than the average mattress — however, if you shop with Texas Mattress Makers, you will be able to find a high-quality, natural latex mattress for a reasonable price. We handmake all of our natural latex mattresses in our on-site factory, which allows us to oversee every step of the production process and sell them for our low, factory-direct prices.

How our natural latex mattresses are made

What is latex? Latex is a liquid that is tapped from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis). Once the sap is extracted, the liquid is whipped, poured into a mattress mold, and baked until it forms a soft, bouncy mattress material.

There are two types of all-natural mattresses that use different manufacturing processes: the Talalay and the Dunlop latex methods. Talalay refers to the type of manufacturing process used to form the mattress material from the rubber tree’s liquid. Some mattress manufacturers mix synthetic latex and natural latex and then claim that their mattress is made with 100% natural latex which is FALSE. Texas Mattress Makers uses CertiPUR-US®-certified, all-natural latex made using the Talalay method in our latex mattress components. These products come with a lot of benefits for both the environment and the sleeper.

Here is a list of the most notable natural latex mattress benefits:

1. Eco-friendly

Want better sleep that leads to a better planet? The fact that natural latex is an eco-friendly innovative component is probably one of the most notable natural latex mattress benefits. As mentioned above, our Talalay latex mattress is made from clean, natural materials extracted from rubber trees right here in the United States. The tree is not cut down during this process and can continue to produce sap for over 30 years, making it a sustainable resource for mattress production. With a natural latex mattress, you can get the best quality sleep and help the planet at the same time.

When you purchase a mattress from Texas Mattress Makers, we will recycle your old mattress for you if you choose our white-glove delivery process!

2. Hypoallergenic

Those who suffer from allergies may have a hard time finding a hypoallergenic solution…until now. Is natural latex hypoallergenic? Yes! Natural latex is dust mite resistant and antimicrobial, meaning no unwanted organisms can penetrate the mattress. There is no need to spend money on a protective mattress cover when you have a natural latex mattress. If you are someone who struggles with year-round allergies or doesn’t clean their mattress often, a natural latex mattress will provide a safe sleeping environment so you can sleep soundly.

3. Pain-relieving properties

If you suffer from arthritis, back pain, or joint pain, a natural latex mattress can provide pain relief as you sleep. Specifically, the Talalay Latex offers fantastic pressure point relief as it molds to the curves of your body as you sleep in any position. The latex component’s natural elasticity maintains proper spinal alignment as it gently lifts your body for a light and buoyant sleeping experience, without the “sinking” feeling. Now, you can sleep more comfortably all night long and alleviate pain at the same time.

4. Breathable and cooling properties

Would you consider yourself a hot sleeper? Do you have trouble keeping cool as you sleep? A natural latex mattress can provide you with a cooler night’s sleep. Talalay Latex has an open rubber cell structure that allows air to flow through easily, allowing your body heat to escape the mattress for a cooler, more restful sleep. The production process of Talalay Latex causes it to have larger cells than those made with the Dunlop method, enabling heat to leave the mattress and cool air to come in faster. Say goodbye to sweating in your sleep!

5. Durable and long-lasting

Natural latex mattresses are an investment — here’s why. High-quality, natural latex mattresses are built to last 10-20 years on average, but if properly taken care of, they can last a lifetime. That means that your mattress will stay comfortable and supportive for twice as long as a standard mattress and you will not have to replace your mattress every few years. This saves you both money and time. The durability of natural latex is one of its key benefits.

Texas Mattress Makers Sells 100% Natural Latex Mattresses for Less! No Supply Shortages or Delivery Delays!

There are truly many natural latex mattress benefits, especially when they are purchased from Texas Mattress Makers. This long-lasting, eco-friendly type of mattress can not only improve your quality of sleep but can improve your quality of life.

If you are in the market for a 100% natural latex mattress, you can find a high-quality, affordable mattress that will last you for years to come with Texas Mattress Makers. Because we handmake all of our natural latex mattresses in our Downtown Houston factory, we are able to cut out unnecessary fees in order to provide our low, factory-direct prices. What Type of Mattress Should I Buy for My Child?

Mattresses for children

Many parents struggle with the question, “What type of mattress should I buy for my child?” The reality is: there is not a perfect answer. Every child is different and will need a different mattress to support their specific needs. What might be the best mattress for a young child may not suit a growing teenager. So, if there isn’t a one-size-fits-all option, how do you go about finding your child’s perfect mattress?

Finding the right mattress for your child doesn’t have to be difficult. When you find a mattress store like Texas Mattress Makers that values the entire family’s comfort, it can turn what once felt like a daunting task into a fun adventure.

The mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to share their top three shopping tips for buying your child’s next mattress. With their help, choosing a mattress for your child will be a breeze.

1. Support is key: How to find the right supportive mattress

The first step in how to choose a mattress for a child is to find a mattress that will properly support them. Support should be your top priority. Finding the right supportive mattress depends on your child’s specific sleep needs including:

  • Your child’s age: How long will your child be sleeping on the mattress? If they are young, you’ll want a bed that will keep them supported as they grow through the years. If they are teenagers, you’ll want a mattress that is a bit more durable to hold their weight and can last well after they have moved out of the house.

  • Your child’s height and weight: Taking into account your child’s height and weight can determine the size and support level of the mattress. For example, your 16-year-old who weighs ~125 pounds and stands at 5’3” is going to need a larger and much more durable mattress than your 7-year-old who weighs 50 pounds. The 16-year-old may do better with twin XL mattresses that are great for growing teens, while the 7-year-old would sleep perfectly well on a twin-size bed. In terms of weight, innerspring mattresses are great for young children but aren’t as great at supporting the weight of an adult or older teen. These aspects are important to ensure that your growing child can be properly supported and comfortable throughout the night.

  • Your child’s preferred sleeping position: How does your child like to sleep? The sleeping position plays a large role in what parts of your body will need support during the night. We’ll talk about this in more detail later on.

  • Your child’s preferred mattress comfort level: Because mattresses are not one-size-fits-all, every individual has a preference for how comfortable they want their mattress to be. Your child needs a supportive mattress, but they also need one that will keep them comfortable throughout the night.

Because most mattresses are priced by quantity and quality of the components used, understanding your mattress’s support layer can also help you to avoid purchasing a more expensive mattress than you need. The perfect mattress doesn’t have to break the bank! Texas Mattress Makers can help you find the best affordable twin mattress for your home.

2. What is your child’s preferred sleeping position?

Knowing your child’s sleep position is an important step in choosing the right mattress. Although some children are still developing and the way they sleep can evolve as they get older, being aware of the cause and effect for each sleeping position is a powerful tool to have. Each position varies in pressure points and which key areas need the most support, and in turn, can determine what type of mattress will give your child the best support for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Side Sleepers

If your child likes to sleep on their side, they will need a mattress with enough support to keep their spine aligned but also enough cushion in the comfort area to provide pressure point relief for the shoulders and your hips –– the two main pressure points that touch the mattress.

Different components, such as different foams or foam alternatives, can be used in the comfort layer of the mattress to help provide pressure point relief while providing a comfy feeling for your child.

Stomach Sleepers

In order to properly support the stomach sleepers in your life, there are four areas to be aware of: the back of the neck, the small of the back, the chest, and the hips. All four points must properly sink into the mattress to keep their body straight and your spine aligned. You’ll need to find a mattress that balances comfort and support well for your stomach sleeper. A Texas Mattress Makers mattress expert can help you find the perfect fit.

Back Sleepers

A common mattress myth is that firmness automatically equals support, which is not always the case. If your child sleeps on their back, all that matters is that their spine is aligned and the right areas are supported. The best mattress for your back sleeper will support both the back of the shoulders and the back of the hips and ensure that the lower back is not being pushed up. Having your child try out a few different mattresses in-store can help them choose what feels right to them.

3. What is your child’s preferred comfort level?

Every child will have their own unique preference for the comfort level of their mattress. Do they prefer a firmer mattress for alignment or a plush, softer feel that they can sink into? Before you choose a mattress, have them come to our showroom and try out a few different comfort levels so they can tell you what feels best.

Remember, there is a difference between feel and support. For example, a mattress can feel soft and be supportive at the same time. It all depends on what your child likes the best. Our showroom displays our wide selection of high-quality mattresses with varying mattress comfort levels, from ultra-soft to ultra-firm mattresses. If you shop with Texas Mattress Makers, your child is bound to find something that will get them excited to sleep.

Find the Best Mattress for Your Child at Texas Mattress Makers with No Supply Shortages or Delivery Delays

What type of mattress should I buy for my child? The answer all depends on your child’s unique needs. Even for children, mattresses are not one-size-fits-all. With Texas Matters Makers, there is a way for you to find a supportive, comfortable, and affordable mattress for your child. Introducing Living Designs Furniture: Providing Handmade, Custom Furniture for Less

After the success of Texas Mattress Makers, we are now pleased to present our sister company, Living Designs Furniture, which will offer the same level of quality and value with one additional benefit – your personal style.

For almost a quarter of a century, Noah’s Manufacturing has been quietly honing the craft of mattress and furniture construction. We were determined to raise industry standards, making the best products with the highest quality materials and construction processes. Our products were setting us apart and our brand name could soon be found in retail stores around the world. But this is just the beginning of the story.

The Living Designs Furniture Story

Before we were even aware ourselves, we had been laying the foundation for a great change in the way Houstonians would buy furniture. After two long decades of dealing with retailers we learned that cost and price point were quickly becoming the main factors in determining the goods that would be made available to the public.

We were faced with a difficult decision. We could meet the demands of the retailers and continue to lowers our prices to the detriment of our product quality or we could risk everything and disrupt the operations of our business and the natural order of our industry.

It was a huge gamble, but it was one we had to take. We knew that the only way to ensure that best quality and value reaches the homes of the people of our community was to offer our products direct to the public.

In 2012 we opened our factory doors to offer our mattresses as Texas Mattress Makers, a move which is still resonating shock waves throughout our local industry. With our own store we were able to create the type of experience we believe the public deserves by prioritizing the needs of the customer. Each mattress is sold for its value-added merits and guaranteed sleep benefits rather than the name on the tag or number of the price.

At Living Designs Furniture, we provide our customers with the ability to dream up and design their own custom furniture right here in Houston. The same quality and care is put into every piece our expert craftsmen create for affordable prices. We believe in giving the customer exactly what they’re looking for.

How to Measure Mattress Sag

How to Measure Mattress Sag

A mattress is often a substantial investment, so any changes in the surface area of your bed can often cause concern.  As you can learn in our article about The Difference Between Natural Body Impressions and Mattress Sag, not every dip in your mattress is cause for alarm. In this article, we will help you learn how to measure a dip in your mattress so you can determine whether your bed has healthy body impressions or unwanted mattress sagging.

How to Measure Mattress Sag in 5 Steps

Things you will need:

  • String, broom, or yardstick
  • Painter’s tape (only needed if string is used)
  • Measuring tape or ruler (any type of measuring tape can be used, but a stiff type such as steel measuring tape is preferable)

Step 1: Remove all bedding

Remove all bedding from your mattress including sheets, pads and foam toppers so you can accurately measure the depression. Any extra materials on top of the mattress may alter your results or make it more difficult to measure. Please note that when measuring a memory foam mattress which has been laid on recently, a few hours may be required before the foam fully decompresses to its natural state.

Step 2: Avoid measurement mistakes

Smooth the top of the mattress with your fingers to eliminate any possible wrinkles in the fabric.

Step 3: Prepare to measure the dip

Lay string, broom, or yardstick across the width of the mattress so it reaches across the deepest part of the depression. If you used string, secure one end of the string to the edge of the mattress with a strip of painter’s tape then gently pull the string taut over the depression and secure it with tape onto the other side of the bed. This type of tape is best because it does not leave any residue on the fabric when removed.

Step 4: Measure the mattress dip

Now that you have either string, yardstick, or broom over the depression in the mattress, you are ready to measure the dip. If you are using a stiff measuring device such as a ruler or steel measuring tape, be careful to avoid placing too much pressure onto the mattress. This could cause the dip measurement to be deeper than it really is. The tip of your measuring device should rest gently on the surface of the mattress. Look for the area where the dip is at the lowest point then measure from this area up to the bottom of the string, broom, or yardstick. This tells you how deep the impression is on your mattress.

Step 5: Interpret the results

If the distance of the depression in your mattress exceeds 2 inches the mattress body impression is not within the advised body impression depth. If the impression does not exceed 2 inches there is no need for concern.

Perks of Buying a Factory Direct Mattress

Perks of Buying a Factory Direct Mattress

There are many benefits to purchasing a factory direct mattress from Texas Mattress Makers. We pride ourselves in offering a unique mattress selection experience unlike any other store in Houston, and due to our factory direct model, you can get your dream mattress for less money.

Our experts are here to answer your questions revolving around the benefits of buying a factory direct mattress.

What is factory direct?

What do we mean when we say the phrase “factory direct?” It’s quite simple –– the product is sold from the factory directly to the customer. Texas Mattress Makers follows this factory direct model. You may be thinking, how is this better than purchasing from a traditional mattress store? We’ll break it down for you!

At a typical mattress store, mattresses are produced by a separate manufacturer, shipped, stored, and then sold to the consumer. Meaning, there are many third-party vendors involved in the process that can jack up the prices and cause delays. This is not the case when you shop with Texas Mattress Makers. Here are all the perks of buying a mattress from us.

Why should I buy a factory direct mattress?

1. Lower prices

When you buy a factory direct mattress from Texas Mattress Makers, you only pay for the components used to make your mattress and the delivery fee (if you choose to have your mattress delivered). Here’s how.

Because of our factory direct model, we cut out the costs associated with product distribution, manufacturer to retailer markup, and huge marketing budgets. We minimize our operation costs by producing our products on-site at our Downtown Houston factory and selling them directly to the public. We pass these factory direct mattress savings onto our customers with our everyday low prices which are half the price of normal retail or less!

2. No storage fees

When other mattress manufacturers produce their products, their mattresses have to be stored somewhere before they can be shipped off to the customer. Who winds up paying for those shipping and storage fees? The customer. You

All of Texas Mattress Makers mattresses are made at our Downtown Houston factory with no third-party storage vendor, so there is no need for a storage fee. With our factory direct mattress savings, you pay less and sleep better. Plus, the mattress delivered to your home will be freshly produced within days of delivery versus sitting in a warehouse for weeks, months or even years sometimes.

3. We cut out the middleman

At Texas Mattress Makers, we are the manufacturer of our own products, meaning we are able to cut out the middleman. This allows us to produce and deliver our products more efficiently since we don’t have to wait for outside sources to do our job for us. Because there are no third-party manufacturers or storage companies, we are able to avoid major supply chain issues and delivery delays to get you your mattress faster. You’ll be sleeping well in no time.

4. Our factory warranty

Since we produce all of our own mattresses in-house, we are able to provide our customers with a factory mattress warranty. If you purchase a factory direct mattress from Texas Mattress Makers and are experiencing any loose threads, collapsed walls, dips in the mattress larger than two inches, and more, our experts can repair your mattress for you at no additional cost.

*Visible dips and sinking-related issues with your mattress caused by a defective box spring or bed frame that was supplied by another manufacturer are not covered. Mattresses with stains or damage due to liquids voids all warranties.

5. Transparency

For the average shopper, mattress components are not easy to differentiate in terms of quality and durability. Each of our mattress experts has made mattresses by hand in order to obtain in-depth knowledge of mattress components and design. Not only will our experts give out our best mattress shopping tips, but they will explain the benefits offered by each bed so you know how these factors come together to affect your sleep.

Hot Sleeper vs Cold Sleeper: What Type of Sleeper Are You?

Hot Sleeper vs Cold Sleeper: What Type of Sleeper Are You?

Are you a hot sleeper and find yourself waking up in the middle of the night sweating? Or, are you a cold sleeper and constantly wake up trying to find more blankets to get warmer? Whether you are a hot or cold sleeper, quality of sleep is directly linked to your body temperature and whether you can maintain a quality core temperature during the night.

The Importance of Body Temperature and Sleep

As humans, we are constantly regulating our body temperature for different activities. According to this HuffPost article, “Falling and rising body temperature over the 24-hour day is an important contributor to the body’s sleep-wake cycle: dropping body temperature helps you fall asleep and stay asleep at night, and rising temperature stimulates alertness in the morning.”

Therefore, if you are a hot sleeper and cannot stay asleep because you are tossing and turning then you are going to wake up feeling groggy. Same goes if you are a cold sleeper and you are constantly waking up feeling like you are in an icebox. The good news is there are certain things you can do to regulate your body temperature.

Tips For Hot Sleepers

If you are one of those people who wake up sweating then there are certain things you can do in your environment to reduce your body temperature needed for sleep.

  1. Sleep with the room at a cool temperature. Many studies claim that it is ideal to sleep with your room temperature between 60-67 degrees. This might not be realistic (or economically feasible) if you live in a hot place like Houston, Texas but you should try to sleep with the A/C about 2 degrees lower than you normally would have it during the day.
  2. Control your bedroom’s temperature throughout the day to be cooler in preparation for the night. Try looking into blackout curtains or blinds to block sunlight throughout the day so that you do not have to work too hard at night to cool down your room before bed.
  3. Take a warm shower or bath before bed. That’s right! It might seem counterintuitive to take a warm or hot shower before you go to bed, but after you get out, your body will work to start cooling you down which can jumpstart your body’s cool temperature needed for quality sleep.

Get Cooler & More Comfortable Sleep

Tips for Cold Sleepers

There is so much information on how you can sleep cooler at night, but what about those of you that wake up shivering ?! If you are a cold sleeper then you can also do things to help elevate your temperature for better sleep.

  1. Wear socks. This might seem silly to wear socks in bed but it is common knowledge that if your feet are warm, that your body tends to feel warmer. So, invest in some cute and cuddly socks to wear to bed and if you get too warm you might find them in your sheets in the morning!
  2. Pajamas. Silk pajamas are great at helping your body regulate your internal body temperature. If you are cold it will help warm you and if you are warm it will help make you cooler! But…if you get extra cold then you may want to look at owning some flannel options.
  3. Cuddle up with the right blanket. Getting the right blanket for your beauty rest is important but there are a few things to consider. If you sleep alone or your partner is also a cold sleeper then consider a nice and fluffy down comforter. If you are the cold one sleeping next to a furnace, then consider a cotton option which can make you warm at night but is also breathable for your partner.

Those are just some of the tips that might help you sleep better whether you are a hot sleeper or a cold sleeper. However, the answer might also be your mattress! It is important to consider the actual surface you are sleeping on when trying to sleep cooler or warmer at night.

The Right Mattress for Hot Sleepers

When you sleep, your body heat is transferred to your mattress. If you are a hot sleeper, your mattress should have breathable components so that your body heat doesn’t become trapped and create a furnace! Thinking about airflow, cooling technologies and products that help wick away body heat are imperative. Some of these to consider are individually wrapped coils, latex and more.

The Right Mattress for Cold Sleepers

People who sleep hot may think you are the lucky one if you sleep colder, but they do not wake up shivering and craving more blankets! When exploring ways to sleep warmer at night make sure you take your mattress into account. There are various components that retain heat, such as traditional memory foam or viscoelastic foam that can help you from reaching for more blankets multiple times a night.
