Tips for How to Test a Mattress in the Store

Tips for How to Test a Mattress in the Store

In order to get the best mattress, you need to know how to test a mattress in the store. After all, you’re going to spend A LOT of time (we’re talking like 33 years of your life) in your bed. You want it to be comfortable and supportive while still giving you the amount of sink you prefer. Thankfully, testing out mattresses is simple –– all you have to do is lay on it!

In this article, the mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers walk you through how to test out a mattress in-store and give you five things to keep in mind when shopping.

How do you test a mattress in a store?

The best way to test out a mattress? Lay on it! To get an accurate idea of the comfort level, experts suggest laying down in your normal sleeping position for at least 15 minutes. It also helps if you’re wearing comfortable clothes when you test out a mattress. If you’ll be sleeping with a partner, have them come too!

Pay special attention to how the bed contours to your body shape. Is it supporting everything that needs to be supported? Do you feel your partner’s movements? Are any of your limbs going numb? Does anything hurt? Pay special attention to your neck, shoulders, and hips as these are where pressure points are most likely to occur. These are common questions to ask yourself when trying out mattresses.

5 things to think about when testing out a mattress

What do I need to know when buying a mattress? Luckily, there isn’t too much to remember when shopping for a mattress. Here are five things to keep in mind when trying mattresses:

1. Think about your sleeping position

Your sleep position is going to tell you a lot about which mattress to buy. It will affect the level of firmness, support, and material. If you’re a side sleeper, you’ll want to try out a softer, more supportive mattress with a thicker comfort layer.

Are you a back sleeper? Ask about a medium-firm mattress or a firm mattress that will provide a  good amount of support for the spine.

Our experts will help you find the right mattress style for any comfort and sleeping position combination including the best type of mattress for stomach sleepers.

2. How much do you weigh?

You don’t have to tell anyone the number, but you do need to keep it in mind when shopping for a new mattress. Certain firmness levels are better suited for different weights. For example, a  softer mattress can provide the right amount of comfort and support for those on the lighter side. For heavier set individuals, you’ll find the most comfort with a mattress that has a firmer support layer. A higher coil count will provide better support while the comfort layer can still provide that plush feel.

If you’re unsure which type of mattress is best for you, ask one of the experts in the store. They will be more than happy to assist you.

3. What’s your firmness preference?

Generally speaking, there are three main types of mattress firmness — soft, medium, and firm— with everything in between. With all those options, you might find yourself wondering how to choose between a firm vs. soft mattress. The right firmness type depends on your sleeping position, weight, body type, and preference. Whether or not you think you know what you want, we highly recommend heading into one of our mattress stores to test out your favorites since a feel selection is a preference and ultimately subjective and can change person to person. You might find that what you thought you wanted actually isn’t comfortable at all.

If you get home to find your new mattress is too firm, it may just need some time to break in. If it’s still too firm after 30-90 days, give us a call! Texas Mattress Makers offers a 90 night trial period from your original delivery or pick-up date. To get more details on our break-in period, check out our refund policy.

4. How much support do you need?

Although the terms are often used in place of one another, mattress firmness is not the same thing as mattress support.

Mattress support is relative to the structure of the bed itself rather than a preference of firmness. It lets you know how well your weight will be distributed so that your spine can maintain a neutral position. Without good support, your mattress can cause muscle aches, back, shoulder, or hip pain, stiffness, and lack of sleep. This is especially true if you have any sort of existing injuries or joint pain.

5. Ask a mattress expert at one of our Houston locations

Buying a mattress is one of the most important purchases you’ll make. Your mattress affects your sleep quality and your sleep quality affects your health, mood, energy, and so much more. This is why we always recommend talking to the people that work in our stores.

Our experts can help direct you to mattress selections that meet the comfort level you’re looking for and answer any questions you might have. We are ready to help you find the perfect mattress!

  • What is your height and weight?
  • What is your body type?
    • Height and weight is important but more important is your bone structure and how you carry your weight. If you are unsure of your body type check out our body type descriptions for males and females.
  • What position do you sleep in?
  • Do you prefer softer or firmer mattresses? Or in between?
  • Do you need your mattress to support certain areas of your body?
    • Knowing the mattress coil count you need for optimal support can be super helpful when searching for a mattress.
  • What size mattress do you need?
  • Do you sleep with a partner?
    • Let’s say you want a firm mattress but your partner would prefer a softer feel –– finding mattresses for couples with different preferences would be a great place to start. At Texas Mattress Makers, we offer a variety of mattress options that are suitable for single sleepers or coupled cuddlers.

Choosing a Twin Mattress in Houston

Choosing a Twin Mattress in Houston

Looking for a twin mattress in Houston? Twin mattresses are the smallest standard mattress sizes available. They measure 38” (wide) x 75” (long). Twin mattresses, though smaller than most traditional mattresses, can meet a variety of needs. Want a less expensive mattress for your guest room? Don’t want to spend a ton of money on a quality mattress that your child or teen might grow out of? Then a twin mattress may be just what you need.

However, most consumers today turn to “bed-in-a-box” retailers to buy a cheap twin mattress. In our experience, a bed-in-the-box is not the answer to your mattress needs. Check out our article What is a bed in a box? to see how these pre-packaged mattresses can cause you to spend more money. If you’re concerned about budget, Texas Mattress Makers has many affordable and luxury twin mattresses to choose from either in store or online.

A twin mattress can fit in multiple spaces while being a money-conscious choice for short-term needs. They can also be good mattresses for college dorms, hospital beds or spaces that are smaller in size.  Whether you’d prefer an innerspring, hybrid or a memory foam mattress, Texas Mattress Makers carries a wide variety of twin mattresses so that you can find the perfect comfort level and size suitable for your needs.

How much should a twin mattress cost?

Typically, a good starting price point for a twin mattress is around $500, though we sell mattresses at a wide range of prices! According to the Sleep Foundation, the average price for a twin-size mattress is:

  • Budget: $400
    • Price range: $250-$1,000
  • Mid-range: $600
    • Price range: $500-$1,500
  • Luxury: $1,300
    • Price range: $1,200-$3,000+

At Texas Mattress Makers, we make sure that the materials and components used in the mattress construction is truly the largest cost factor. The price of the mattress will vary depending on the type of material used in the mattress’s construction, which in turn impacts the support and comfort of the mattress.

When you purchase a mattress from Texas Mattress Makers, you’re not paying for a brand name or extra storage fees –– you’re paying for the mattress and its components. That’s it! Because our mattresses are made right in our factory in Downtown Houston with materials sourced from the U.S., we can provide you with the highest quality mattress for a fair price.

Our expert picks for the best twin mattresses in Houston

Our mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to give their picks for the best twin mattress in Houston that we offer in-store and online:

  • Bellevue Euro Top Mattress: The open coil support unit with a Euro top comfort layer provides a soft, durable mattress that keeps your children/teens comfortable and supported as they grow.
  • Berlin Mattress: The perfect mattress for dorms, guest bedrooms, and kids’ rooms. The isolated coils provide optimal support for the sleeper by molding to the body as they sleep.
  • Dublin Deluxe Mattress: The large coils in this medium-firm mattress provide lumbar support ideal for back and stomach sleepers who are looking for great value in an everyday mattress.
  • Santa Barbara Deluxe Mattress: Our most popular mattress provides personalized support for all sleeping positions using Active Support Technology, stays cool all night long, and incorporates additional, highly resilient foam comfort layers for a medium feel.
  • Nice Plush Mattress: The high-coil count offers softness, support, and pressure relief for a restful night’s sleep. Supports all sleeping positions.

For more information on how to find the best twin mattress for you and your specific needs, visit our mattress buying guide. A twin mattress is the smallest standard size, so if you are buying a mattress for a tall teen or a taller child, you might want to consider a Twin XL mattress which is 38” x 80” so a bit longer. If you are an adult or buying a mattress that will be shared by a couple, or if you are currently finding a twin mattress is feeling a little too cramped, consider sizing up with a Queen mattress in Houston for extended sleeping space.

How to Clean a Dirty Mattress

How to Clean a Dirty Mattress

Your perfect mattress can be a big investment, so knowing how to clean a dirty mattress can be a huge time and money-saver.

Contrary to popular belief, a few stains here and there are not signs your mattress is bad, they are just a part of life. You sleep on your bed every night, after all! But there are stubborn stains that have been cleaned, and then there’s stuff that builds up over time, like dust, dirt, dead skin, hair, fur, and sweat. This stuff does need to be taken care of.

So if you’re wondering, “How do you deep clean a mattress?” we’ve got the tips and tricks for you.

Want to avoid getting your mattress dirty in the first place? Consider purchasing a mattress protector that can protect your mattress from dirt and dust. We recommend purchasing a mattress protector that is made of breathable material like cotton so you can avoid getting hot while you sleep. Be sure to wash it every other time you wash your sheets or every two weeks! For more information, check out our article on how to protect your mattress!

Why is Cleaning your Mattress Important?

Letting dirt and body fluids fester in your mattress can increase wear and tear on your mattress. It is a general rule of thumb that it’s a good idea to clean your current mattress at minimum twice a year to keep it fresh and prevent damage or infestations.

With that said, keep in mind that the overall lifespan of your mattress depends on how the mattress is made and how well it is taken care of at home. For example, our Quantum Coil mattresses are built with first-rate materials that are highly resilient and can last for a lifetime if taken care of properly

It’s important to note that most mattress warranties will not cover mattress defects caused by liquid, so taking good care of your mattress and protecting it will allow you to keep your mattress for much longer.

How Do You Deep Clean a Mattress?

Home remedies for cleaning a dirty mattress

The path to a clean mattress might just begin with items you can find in your kitchen cabinet. Items such as baking soda and vinegar can be used as all-natural cleaning agents for your dirty mattress. Distilled white vinegar can be used to pull stains out, while baking soda will soak up the vinegar and eliminate odors. We’ll get into step-by-step instructions in a minute.

And important notes about cleaning different mattress types

When learning how to clean a dirty mattress, you first need to discover the best ways to clean your mattress. Just as all mattresses are not one-size-fits-all, not all cleaning solutions will work for every mattress. For example, if you have a memory foam mattress, try to use as little moisture as possible when lifting a stain. Instead, simply spot treat any stains to keep it clean. If you have any questions about cleaning your particular mattress, feel free to speak with any of our Texas Mattress Makers experts.

Cleaning used mattresses

If you are trying to clean a used mattress, or are planning on donating your mattress, we strongly recommend getting a professional mattress cleaning service to do the deep cleaning for you.

Clean your Dirty Mattress in Just 4 Steps

Now that we’ve discussed the importance of keeping your mattress clean, here’s how to do it:

  • Step 1: Strip your bed of all sheets, pillows, and blankets. While you’re at it, you might as well clean these too for a fully fresh bed.
  • Step 2: Get rid of any stains using distilled white vinegar. If the stain is fresh, be sure to blot (not push) the stain with a paper towel to remove as much liquid as possible. Next, use a spray bottle to spray the vinegar directly onto the stain. Let that sit for at least 5-10 minutes minimum in a well-ventilated area.
  • Step 3: Absorb the vinegar with baking soda. Sprinkle the baking soda all over the stain and the surface of the mattress and let that sit for several hours. The baking soda will soak up the vinegar and any odors coming from the mattress.
  • Step 4: Vacuum the mattress. Thoroughly vacuum the mattress a few times through to make sure that all of the baking soda is gone.

Find your Perfect Mattress at Texas Mattress Makers

Knowing how to clean a dirty mattress can keep your current mattress fresh and can even last longer. But if you’re interested in something new and are looking for where to buy a mattress in Houston, Texas Mattress Makers offers high-quality luxury mattresses that are handmade right here in the state of Texas. Our experts can help you choose the perfect mattress that will last you a lifetime.

How to Get Your Best Sleep Ever this National Sleep Awareness Month

March is National Sleep Awareness Month | Texas Mattress Makers

At Texas Mattress Makers, we always love sharing our “education” tips with our customers; but for National Sleep Awareness Month, we wanted to share the secret of the #1 contributor to getting the best sleep ever. The answer is quite simple.

Your mattress. But not just “any” mattress, the right mattress for you

For National Sleep Awareness Month 2021, we’ll be discussing how the right mattress is an important component of getting the best quality sleep, and how Texas Mattress Makers can provide you with the perfect mattress.

When is National Sleep Awareness Week?

Let’s be honest, we all take sleep for granted. As a whole, we’re not as aware of how important sleep is for our everyday lives. That’s why National Sleep Awareness Month in March, and National Sleep Awareness Week (March 14th – 20th of 2021) are great observations to the crucial benefits sleep has on our health. There are other national days that correlate with sleep importance to keep on your calendar:

  • National Take a Nap Day (Tuesday, March 9th) – the day after Daylight Savings Time.  Daylight Savings Time can essentially “delay” your sleep cycle due to the loss of one hour of sleep. This can make you more tired during the day, resulting in the need for a nap.
  • National Sleep Day (Friday, March 19th) – the same day as World Sleep Day to recognize the importance of sleep and the effects it has on your overall health and life.

We at Texas Mattress Makers are in the business of making sure you get a good night’s sleep every day of the year. We are passionate about conveying the health benefits of sleep year-round, especially during National Sleep Awareness Month. So, how does sleep affect your overall health?

How Does Sleep Affect Your Daily Life?

Sleep is one of the most important factors affecting your physical and mental health, but only 1-in-10 Americans consider sleep to be a priority. Considering how much time we spend in our beds per day, you’d think that number would be higher. During sleep, your body is working to support healthy brain function to carry you through your everyday activities. In other words, you need sleep to physically function.

Other important aspects of our health including diet and exercise are also affected by our quality of sleep. A good night’s sleep can determine your metabolism and how you will physically feel the next day. Sleeping well helps us feel better.

Some of us associate exercise equipment with aiding us in staying healthy. Weights, treadmills, and other equipment are used to make our body stronger, and in turn, healthier. In a way, your mattress is a tool used to keep you healthy. So why should you settle for any old mattress? The reality is, you shouldn’t settle for just any mattress.

The Importance of the Perfect Mattress

Think about your last few nights of sleep. Were you tossing and turning? Did you feel too hot? How did you feel when you woke up? Were you still tired or groggy? Even though approximately 9 million Americans use sleep aids in hopes of a better rest, they’re ignoring the most crucial aspect of sleep –– their bed. If you are waking up every morning not feeling like you got a good night’s rest, you’re sleeping on the wrong mattress. It’s likely that your bed could have one or more of these bad mattress symptoms, meaning it’s time for an update.

Our founder and CEO Youval Meicler has been educating customers on the importance of a good mattress for over 40 years, and has taught our experts how to do the same. We can confidently explain and showcase each mattress’s materials and components and the cause and effect of those components. Meaning, you will know how the mattress will perform and what type of sleeper it will best suit. And if you don’t find one that best fits your needs, we can explore custom options at no additional cost.

A mattress is an investment in your health –– so don’t sleep on finding the best one. You will be doing yourself a great service by choosing a mattress that will benefit you in the long run by a manufacturer who cares about your quality of sleep.

A mattress from Texas Mattress Makers will give you better sleep quality

1. We can give you exactly what you need in a mattress

The average person spends seven or more hours of the day sleeping in their bed. That’s a lot of time to be laying on a mattress. And yet, online mattress companies are trying to persuade customers that their one-for-all products will help you sleep better. Mattresses are not one-size-fits-all. As the top custom mattress makers in Texas, we have the tools, the resources, and the expertise to hand make all of our mattresses so you can get exactly what you want in a mattress.

2. We get to know you and your needs

At Texas Mattress Makers, we are invested in your unique sleep patterns and needs to ensure that we find the best mattress for you. We’re not interested in simply selling you a mattress –– we’re interested in helping you find a mattress that will improve your quality of sleep, and your life in the long run.

3. We have a large selection of mattresses to choose from (and try out!)

Remember Goldilocks and the Three Bears? Goldilocks was dedicated to finding a mattress that was just right, and laid in three before she finally found the one that felt right to her body. Shopping at Texas Mattress Makers is a lot like that — just without the breaking & entering and the trio of angry bears!

Our vast selection of mattresses in our showrooms allows our customers to try a bunch of different mattresses out before finding the perfect one to take home. We’ll ask you questions to dictate if you’d prefer a firm vs. a soft mattress, or if you sleep with a partner, we’ll give our suggestions for the best mattress for couples. The possibilities are endless when it comes to our selection, and our experts will help you find the best option.

How to Break in a Mattress

How to Break in a Mattress

Knowing how to break in a mattress can be a game-changer when you are considering buying a new bed for your home. Let’s say you have just purchased a brand new mattress. You browsed the showroom’s selections, spoke with an expert, and tried out different mattresses until you found the perfect fit. But when you get your mattress home and lie down that first night, you notice it feels much more stiff than it did in the store. Why does it feel different? The answer: the mattress has not been broken in.

Breaking in a mattress is a crucial part of getting the best night’s sleep long-term. But, how do you go about breaking it in? Texas Mattress Makers answers your FAQs and explains everything you need to know about how to break in a mattress.

Looking for where to buy a mattress in Houston? Look no further than Texas Mattress Makers.

1. Is it Possible to Break in a Mattress?

Of course! Breaking in a mattress can be a lot like breaking in new shoes –– the more they adjust to your body, the more comfortable they feel.

The best tip when it comes to knowing how to break in a mattress is simple: continue to sleep on it! The more you sleep on the mattress, the more the materials will begin to loosen up and conform to your body, getting rid of that firmness you’re experiencing. The experts at Texas Mattress Makers say that when you receive your mattress it will be about 20% firmer than what you felt at the showroom but this will change once it is broken in. To speed up this process, you can use your hands and feet to apply pressure around the mattress to soften it further. This last tip is especially useful if you’re experiencing new mattress back pain and want to make your mattresses more comfortable quickly.

2. How Long Does it Take to Break in a Mattress?

Depending on the type of mattress you have, it can take around 30-60 days for the mattress to adjust to your body, soften up, and give you the “showroom” feel you experienced. Remember, your mattress may not feel perfect right away, but again, the materials need time to adjust to your body before it’ll feel perfect for you.

If you’ve waited the break in period and still feel like you’re not getting a good night’s sleep on your mattress, call the mattress store where you purchased your mattress.

3. Why is my New Mattress too Firm?

Is your new mattress too firm? Do mattresses get softer with time? Essentially, yes. When a mattress is bought straight from the showroom, it can often feel a bit firmer than it did in the store because it hasn’t been broken in yet. The components in the mattress are all new and have to adjust to your body. As you continue to sleep on your mattress, the components will contour and mold to your body creating what we call a mattress body impression. This impression is natural and healthy and helps the mattress properly align your spine as you sleep.

In fact, some of our mattresses in the Texas Mattress Makers showroom include these body impressions. This helps our customers get the most realistic idea of what their mattress will feel like once it’s been broken in.

4. Why is my New Mattress too Soft?

We talked about what to expect when your new mattress feels too firm, but what if your new mattress is too soft? This is sadly a reality for those who purchase mattresses from major retailers. Earlier we mentioned that our showroom mattresses may contain body impressions to give the customer the most realistic idea of what the mattress will feel like after it’s been broken in. Major retailers don’t do this

When in the purchasing process, you may be lying on a mattress that hasn’t been broken in, therefore that feeling will soften over the next few weeks (and can take up to 60 days to fully break in). Long story short, you may have bought a mattress thinking it would stay that firm, when in reality, it will mold and adjust to your body’s pressure.

Keep this in mind when considering a new mattress. Ask the salesperson questions about how the mattress performs to be sure you’re making a smart investment. We do spend approximately one-third of our lives asleep, so it’s important to take the time to find the perfect mattress for you.

Breaking in a Mattress: Why it Matters

Customers researching how to break in a mattress should understand that your mattress will change over time. Just because your brand new mattress doesn’t feel 100% perfect in the first few days, doesn’t mean it will always feel that way. Our mission is to educate customers on how your mattress will feel throughout its life-span and not to focus on the short-term differences.

As mentioned above, breaking in a mattress only takes around 30-60 days. After that, you’ll start to notice the comfort, the support, and the feel is just right. It just takes a little patience!

At Texas Mattress Makers, we don’t want to sell you a mattress without letting you know how it will perform in the long run. After all, our vast selection exists so that you can find the right mattress fit to your unique sleep needs.

If you’ve had your mattress for a while and noticed issues with your mattress, make sure to see if your experience lines up with top bad mattress symptoms, as these could be signs that your mattress is breaking down instead of breaking in.

Get Realistic Mattress Expectations at Texas Mattress Makers

How We Keep Our Luxury Mattresses Affordable

Depending on where you shop, a high-quality luxury mattress can cost you a pretty penny. At Texas Mattress Makers, however, we work hard to keep all of our mattresses affordable year-round. That’s why when customers ask us When is the best time to buy a mattress? the answer is always now, when you need it and not during such-and-such sale

At Texas Mattress Makers, we help you save money by:

  • Manufacturing our mattresses in-house at our Houston factory, allowing you to get factory-direct pricing
  • Manufacturing mattresses as needed, cutting out overhead inventory costs
  • Buying our components from trusted suppliers based in the U.S., with whom we have built a relationship with for over 40 years.
  • Manufacturing our own mattresses instead of selling brand-name mattresses

Most importantly in regards to high-quality luxury mattresses, Texas Mattress Makers does not inflate prices when we use components that incorporate a new technology. When you buy a mattress at Texas Mattress Makers, you are paying for the price of the components that go into making it. Our high-quality, luxury components typically incorporate technology that enables the component to provide additional sleeping benefits. The prices of these technologically-advanced components are naturally higher, but your standard mattress company will inflate these prices, where Texas Mattress Makers does not.

Investing in a high-quality luxury mattress? Make the most of your mattress’s longevity when you learn how to protect your mattress

Considerations for Purchasing a High-Quality Luxury Mattress

There are quite a few things to keep in mind when searching for a mattress. Understanding all the different factors that go into determining what makes a high-quality, luxury mattress good for you can quickly get complicated. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, please do not hesitate to visit one of our physical locations and/or speak with one of our sleep experts in-person, by phone, or in our online chat.

1. Sleeping position and body type

Your typical sleeping position in combination with your body type plays an extremely important role in determining what type of mattress will provide you with optimal support. The best luxury mattress for side sleepers will likely be different from the best luxury mattress for stomach sleepers… and, depending on where and how you carry your weight, best mattresses for side sleepers may even differ between two individual side sleepers!

2. Feel vs. support

When shopping for high-quality, luxury mattresses, it’s easy to conflate mattress feel with support and vice versa.

Feel refers to how you like your mattress to feel when you’re sleeping on it. Maybe you like your mattress to feel firm and solid, maybe you like your mattress to feel pillowy and soft, or maybe you like something in between.

Support refers to the type and amount of support a mattress is able to provide your spine and how it works to align your head, neck, shoulders, and hips. A mattress that perfectly aligns the spine of a person who carries more weight may throw off the spinal alignment of a person who does not; a mattress that allows a person who does not carry weight to sink into their mattress may not be supportive enough for someone who does, and so on.

3. Components/mattress type

Different types of mattresses and components answer different needs, such as responsiveness, contouring, pressure relief, edge support, temperature control, and overall feel. If you’re not sure what type of mattress best fits your needs, check out the following guides.

While all these mattress types have their merits, hybrid mattresses are by far the most popular type of mattress. Hybrid mattresses combine a soft comfort layer on top with a support layer on bottom. The different materials used in both layers create the opportunity for a great deal of versatility in hybrid mattresses, so must customers are able to find a hybrid mattress that suits their needs.

Pro tip: When customers search for high-quality luxury mattresses, they are more likely than not to run into suggestions to invest in mattresses that incorporate Talalay latex. There is a good reason for this: Talalay latex is durable, resilient, and environmentally friendly. But just like any component, it’s not ideal for everyone. For more information, check out the buying guide above and our latex components page.

4. Budget and size

At Texas Mattress Makers, we work hard to keep our prices accessible year-round so that everyone can find a mattress that truly meets their sleeping needs. It’s our goal that you be able to find a mattress that will help you sleep more comfortably at all price points. Even our luxury options, including all of the mattresses mentioned above come with 12 months 0% interest financing, our 90-night comfort guarantee, and a 10-year warranty.

As you shop, keep in mind that the price point will change depending on the size of mattress you want. A king size luxury mattress is going to cost more than that same mattress in smaller size, plain and simple.

5. Custom options

Looking to up your mattress game in a custom space, such as an RV or an antique bed? Have you found a mattress you like, but wish to make a few small changes to improve your comfort? Texas Mattress Makers are leading custom mattress makers in Texas. You can work with us to make the perfect mattress for your unique space and personalized needs.

The Best Motion Isolation Mattress

Best Motion Isolation Mattress

When your partner’s tossing and turning starts adding up to lost sleep you may find yourself wondering “What is the best mattress for minimal partner disturbance?” or “What is a motion isolation mattress?” Sometimes sharing a bed with a partner can have its pros and cons, especially if you two have different sleep habits that keep the other awake. While other mattress companies may not carry mattresses that can satisfy both of your needs, the custom mattress makers at Texas Mattress Makers may have the perfect solution to you or your partner’s sleep needs.

Is it possible to find a mattress that you both will enjoy? Of course! We’ll be sharing our top picks for mattresses that will isolate motion so you and your partner can shift, move, and turn without disturbing one another all night long.

What is motion isolation in a mattress?

Motion isolation refers to how well a mattress can absorb a person’s movement while on or getting in and out of the bed. A mattress that has good motion isolation should allow a partner to move without disturbing the other person lying next to them.

Couples that are looking for how to reduce motion transfer in bed most likely have a mattress where they can feel every movement their partner makes. This can lead to one of you waking up numerous times throughout the night and not getting enough sleep. So, what is the best mattress for no motion transfer?

The truth is, mattresses are not one-size-fits-all for couples. Though there are types of mattresses known to reduce partner disturbance, they may not be the perfect fit for you and your partner. We always recommend that couples stop by one of our showrooms to test out different mattresses to find the perfect match for both of your needs. If you and your partner suffer with some sleep disturbance issues, here’s what we recommend for those situations.

Best mattress for couples who toss and turn

Mattresses with memory foam and individually wrapped coils are typically the most effective mattress materials for isolating movement during the night. Traditional memory foam responds to pressure in a way that isolates motion and provides natural support to your body. On the other hand, these coils are individually wrapped and are not connected, meaning that they respond individually to pressure. When you apply pressure to the wrapped coils, only those coils are reacting enabling them to contour to the shape of your body, isolating your movement to your side of the bed. For example, our Essential Plus combines both elements of gel-memory foam in the comfort area and individually wrapped coils in the support layer to balance comfort and support while minimizing partner disturbances. If the London Mattress is not your ideal mattress, here are some other recommendations:

Our mattress picks for minimal partner disturbance:

  • 100% Foam Mattress (Soft): Best for side and back sleepers who like a  cushioned comfort feel. This is an all foam mattress, so if you sleep hot or do not like the “sinking in” feeling that is traditional to memory foam mattresses, you may be better off with another soft mattress.
  • Hotel Comfort Mattress (Ultra-Soft): This is a hybrid mattress made with individually wrapped coils in the support layer and graphite memory foam in the comfort layer to give you minimal partner disturbance while giving you an ultra soft feel with optimal support.
  • Hybrid Plus Mattress (Medium): This is a medium feeling mattress which uses High Resilience foam in the comfort layer and individually wrapped coils in the support layer to give you a plush feeling ideal for all sleeping positions.
  • Essential Plus (Medium-Firm): Uses memory foam layers for a cozy and sound night sleep. Ideal for back and stomach sleepers.
  • Hybrid Plus Mattress (Firm): Best for stomach and back sleepers with an emphasis on joint pressure relief and cooling technology.

Best mattress for restless partner

Mattresses with a high coil count minimize motion transfer and eliminate partner disturbances so that you can rest soundly even if one of you gets out of bed or moves. At Texas Mattress Makers, we carry hybrid mattresses where each coil responds independently, meaning it can respond accurately to wherever there is pressure from the body. This is a great mattress for couples who have a restless partner because it will isolate that partner’s movement specifically while keeping the other still

For example, the Hybrid Plus is a soft, luxurious mattress that features individually-wrapped coils that will support and minimize partner disturbance throughout the night. Bonus: this mattress is also good for keeping hot sleepers cool all night long.

Dual comfort mattresses for partners with different preferences

If your partner loves a firmer mattress for back support, but you want a softer feel that hugs your body, it can be difficult to find a compromise. Not anymore. The dual comfort mattress, made in a king size or larger, offers each sleeper a unique feel on their side of the bed. The mattress is made up of different components on each side to give each of you the personalized comfort and support you need!

Because our mattresses are made in our on-site factory, you only have to pay for the materials used inside each side of the mattress. This means you can get the best fit for your specific sleep needs without breaking the bank. If you are getting a dual comfort mattress, please come into one of our locations so we can find the right mattresses for each side so that you and your partner can enjoy an uninterrupted and restful night’s sleep.

Can’t decide on a single mattress? Meet the Split King mattress!

Even if you have a large enough mattress for the two of you, sometimes space isn’t the issue. If you both have conflicting mattress preferences, a split king mattress could be your solution! A split king bed is made of two Twin XL mattresses placed together in one bed frame so both sides can get customized comfort. This way, both partners get the level of comfort and support they desire, and can still sleep in the same bed comfortably! There isn’t even a difference in size between a split king vs. king mattress; they’re the same size, but offer more options for customization. This mattress could be the answer to you and your partner’s mattress dreams.

Time to Sleep Soundly: Shop for Motion Isolation Mattresses at Texas Mattress Makers

If you’re looking for where to buy a mattress in Houston, look no further than Texas Mattress Makers. Making the Best Mattress for Couples

Is there a “best mattress for couples” out there? If you love your partner but hate sharing a bed with them, it’s possible that the mattress you own might let them sleep soundly, but makes you miserable. We’re here to discuss the best type of mattress for couples with different preferences to ensure you and your partner can find a mattress that you’ll both enjoy.

If you’re looking for the best gift to give your significant other this Valentine’s Day, a custom mattress could be a great investment. Need advice on how to choose a mattress for you and your loved one? Here are our recommendations.

What type of mattress is best for couples?

Though it is a common question, there is no distinct answer because no two people will take to a bed the same way. Every individual has their own unique sleeping habits and needs including their sleeping position, what areas of the body they need to support, and their preferred mattress comfort level.

Let’s say you prefer to sleep on your side, but your partner likes to sleep on their back. A standard mattress with one comfort level is not going to benefit both sleepers. Your partner will need a firmer mattress component to support their back while you would sleep better on a softer mattress to conform to your body. But if you and your partner suffer with some sleep disturbance issues, here’s what we recommend for those situations.

Not sure what type of mattress is right for you? take the Texas Mattress Makers Quiz to see exactly what you need for a perfect night’s rest.

Best mattress size for couples

A queen or king mattress is large enough to fit two people comfortably with the inclusion of pets or kids, making them the ideal mattress size for couples. But as mentioned above, sometimes a standard mattress can’t address both you and your partner’s needs. But is it possible to have the best of both worlds? Yes! Here at Texas Mattress Makers, we specialize in custom dual-comfort mattresses so neither of you have to compromise on comfort

If you’re looking for a mattress with space and adjustability, split beds for couples could be the answer for you and your valentine. Some great examples are the split king mattress or the dual comfort mattress. A split king involves two different Twin XL mattresses within one bed frame, meaning it’s not two separate beds, simply two different mattresses that make up a king-sized bed. Split king mattresses are commonly used with adjustable frames so that each partner can sleep in the position that works best for them. A dual comfort mattress is a custom-fitted mattress that has different components on each side of the mattress for a perfect sleep fit for each individual.

Best mattress for minimal partner disturbance

If you’re looking for the best mattress for couples who toss and turn, memory foam, or alternative foams, and individually wrapped coils are typically the most effective mattress materials for isolating movement and not waking up your partner. Traditional memory foam is made of polyurethane foam that is viscoelastic, meaning it responds to pressure in a way that isolates motion and provides natural support to your body. On the other hand, individually wrapped coils contour to the shape of your body, isolating your movement to your side of the bed. For example, our Paris Mattress is made with memory foam and uses individually wrapped coils to minimize partner disturbances and caresses the body for a sound night sleep.

Our picks for mattresses that minimize disturbance:

Best mattress for different weight couples

Height and weight are important factors when choosing a mattress, but when you’re shopping for two individuals with unique body types, it can be challenging. Hybrid mattresses combine different elements for support and comfort to meet you and your partner’s sleep needs.

Buying a Mattress for You and Your Partner? Texas Mattress Makers is Your Dream Mattress Destination.

We’ve talked about all of the different kinds of mattresses that are suitable for couples, but we understand that you and your partner are unique. That’s why we recommend stopping by our showroom so you can try out our mattresses in person or speak with an expert. Our staff is more than happy to navigate you through all of your options so you can make the right purchase for you and your partner. As custom mattress makers in Houston, your custom handmade mattress is never overpriced with our factory (low) prices.

Best Adjustable Bed Frames – Buyer’s Guide

Best Adjustable Bed Frames - Buyer’s Guide

If you are thinking about investing in an adjustable bed frame, you want to find the best adjustable bed frame for your needs. Texas Mattress Makers has created this buyers guide to help shoppers choose the right adjustable bed frame, understand the benefits of adjustable bed frames, and more.

How Do I Choose an Adjustable Bed Frame?

Not sure what you’re looking for in an adjustable bed frame? Here’s how to find the best adjustable bed frames for your needs in 4 easy steps.

1. Make sure your mattress is compatible with an adjustable bed frame

Will any mattress work with an adjustable bed? No; hybrid mattresses, foam mattresses, and latex mattresses are more likely to be compatible with adjustable bed frames. These mattresses are more likely to have the proper balance between durability and flexibility to withstand the extra demands an adjustable bed frame places on a mattress.

Mattresses that have coil-on-coil components (such as our River Oaks Manhattan Pillowtop, Manhattan Firm and Bellevue series) are never compatible with adjustable bed frames. If you’re not sure whether your mattress is compatible with an adjustable bed frame, call Texas Mattress Makers, visit us in-store, or reach out to our chat support team.

2. Identify why you want an adjustable bed frame

Are you looking for the best adjustable bed frames out there because you need a bed frame that will help with pain relief? Or are you hoping to find a top adjustable bed frame because you like to lounge, read, watch TV, or even work in bed? How about both? Identifying why you want an adjustable bed frame will help you decide which adjustable bed frames have the features you both want and need.

3. Know what features you want your adjustable bed frame to have

Adjustable bed frames come in a range of price points and with a variety of bells and whistles. Even so, most adjustable beds should have the following features to help make their incorporation into your sleep routine seamless.

  • A remote control, preferably backlit, for easy bed adjustments, even at night
  • Battery back-up, so that you can adjust your bed even in the event of a power outage
  • Durable components (including supportive legs) so that your adjustable foundation lasts

Depending on your budget, you may wish to look for adjustable bed frames with pre-set positions, under-the-bed lighting, extra outlets, massage, lumbar support, and more.

4. Shop at a trustworthy location

You can pay a pretty penny for the best adjustable bed frames out there, especially if the store selling them inflates their price. To make sure you’re getting a truly high-quality adjustable bed frame without overpaying, we recommend shopping at a store that you trust.

At Texas Mattress Makers, we work hard to make sure that our mattresses are fairly priced year-round, and we apply that same philosophy to the bed frames that we sell. We are one of the top trusted mattress stores in Houston and are proud to supply high-quality adjustable beds to Houston, TX at fair prices.

Benefits of Adjustable Bed Frames

One of the most common questions we receive with regard to adjustable bed frames is, “Are adjustable beds worth the money?” Frankly, the answer to this question depends on several factors. In terms of adding comfort while lounging (such reading or watching TV in bed), it’s hard to beat the benefits of an adjustable bed frame. But should you be looking at adjustable bed frames for pain relief, there are several things to consider.

If you aren’t sleeping well and can only afford either a new mattress or an adjustable bed frame, a new mattress is the way to go. An adjustable bed frame cannot compensate for a worn out mattress. But if you have a good mattress and looking for ways to make your sleep even more comfortable and/or have special sleep needs, an adjustable bed frame can provide some helpful benefits.

  • Reducing arthritis pain: If you have specific problem areas, you can adjust your adjustable bed frame to reduce pressure on these areas. An adjustable bed frame can also make it easier to get out of bed. For added relief, couple an adjustable bed frame with our Geneva Copper Latex Hybrid Select Mattress with arthritis relief properties.
  • Reducing back pain: Do adjustable bed frames help with back pain? Yes, the ability to slant your adjustable foundation can help angle your back and/or legs to reduce pressure on your spine without having to use mountains of pillows.
  • Enhancing circulation: Resting with both your head and legs slightly elevated makes it easier for blood to flow to your heart. In turn, your heart is able to more effectively pump blood to your limbs.
  • Reducing swelling in the legs: Individuals with conditions that cause swelling in your legs (including pregnant women) are able to find relief from swelling by elevating their legs at night with an adjustable bed frame. The bed frame can help you easily get in and out of bed because it allows you to raise your bed up and down as needed.
