Snooze News Ep. 35: 2020 Mattress Industry Trends

With over 40 years of mattress making experience, we’re still going to the Las Vegas Market to continue our education in the mattress industry. Why? Well, you’ll have to keep reading…

Let’s cut-to-the-chase…what did we learn at this year’s Las Vegas Market?

Trending Mattress Industry Trends

  • Bed-in-a-Box: that’s right, the industry is still trying to figure out how to put the ‘perfect’ bed in a box. And, they’ll still confused as to why they see so many returns and upset customers after just a short while sleeping on the ‘perfect’ mattress. Let us remind you, there is no one-size-fits-all mattress. Here at Texas Mattress Makers we want to fit you into the proper mattress that will help you sleep well. It’s not about a price-point, up-selling or cross-selling you – it’s all about making you comfortable. Skip the ‘marketing fad’ and come see us – you’ll be glad you did.
  • Heat Dissipating Toppers: the one product we did order at the Las Vegas is an innovative mattress topper (cover) that blocks your body heat from penetrating the comfort and support layers of your mattress. What does that mean? It means that you’ll sleep cooler at night. Let us be clear, this product does not cool you down – it simply does not allow your body (the heat source) to warm the bed under you. We’ll be testing this product over the next few months before we introduce it on our mattresses for you to purchase. Stay tuned, warm sleepers!
  • Busting the Marketing Myths: last but not least, we heard a lot of marketing talk that doesn’t make any sense and won’t make you comfortable. Sure, it sounds great and the ‘technology’ is impressive when verbalized. The issue is that most ‘new’ materials and products are simply repackaged products that didn’t boost sales last time around. You’ll have to watch the episode to hear Youval’s take on ‘marketing’ – hang on to your hats, it’s full of ‘passion’.

Watch the episode below for the full break down (plus some great impromptu singing) of what we learned.

Snooze News Ep. 33: Why Sleep Should Be One of Your New Year’s Resolutions

Snooze News Ep. 33

In Episode 33 we’re talking about your new year’s resolution (new year, new you…right?!). We know the typical list of ways were going to change in 2020…go to the gym more often, eat better, work on relationships, etc. Is stopping by Texas Mattress Makers for a new mattress on your list? Well, it should be! A good night’s sleep impacts your physical and mental wellness, your motivation, energy-level and so much more. Get a pen out and rewrite your resolution for 2020 – sleeping well is #1. And, if you don’t believe us, take Youval’s advice and Google it for yourself!

Comfort Is Personal

The fact of the matter is that none of us have ever been educated on comfort. How do you know when you’re comfortable? How do you know when you’re uncomfortable – and why? How many times do you toss-and-turn every night? Can my comfort-level change over the years? All great questions!

We do know this – sleeping well is very important for our longevity and happiness. It’s not about your budget, what you’ve heard from your friends and family, or a clever marketing slogan that should determine which mattress is right for you. Rather, it’s your body type, shape, gender and sleep position. But who can help – we can!

Our recommendation is this – re-think your new year’s resolution. Start with sleeping well. Losing weight, eating better and restoring a long-lost relationship will all benefit from a good night’s sleep. Why? Well, it is scientifically proven that when you sleep well it is more likely that you will be physically fit, your metabolism is more chemically balanced, and your emotional intelligence gets a boost from a brain that is well-rested and ready to work.

Never checked out our reviews? You’re missing out! While we aren’t perfect, we pay close attention to every review that we received. After all, our customers are always #1! And, if you’re reading this and never got around to writing us a review on your favorite website or social media channel – take the time and do it right now! We’d love to hear from you!

Texas Mattress Makers Reviews: The Good, The Bad, & The Sleepy

  1. We Make It Right – while we do our very best to be perfect, sometimes we make a mistake! We’re human! But that’s what makes us different! If there’s a problem with your mattress we WANT you to come to one of our showrooms or give us a call. It is our absolute pleasure to make sure your mattress performs the way it should.
  2. We Make It Custom – we’re the only shop in Houston that can provide you a custom mattress. That means that if you can dream it, we can build it. Oh, well that sounds expensive! Well, it’s not! You’ll have to watch the video to get all of the details – but, know this – we base our pricing on the materials used in the mattress. Market trends, advertising buzz words and the guys down the road – they don’t impact our prices one cent…why? Because we make everything we sell. We’re ready for the challenge, big or small, we’ve done it all.
  3. We Help You Choose – most mattress stores have sales representatives that work on commission and try their very best to upsell you into a mattress that you don’t need. We do the opposite. No pushy sales team or upselling. In fact, we frequently encourage customers to purchase a mattress that is below their maximum budget. Our sales staff is highly trained in helping you select the proper mattress for your body type, gender and sleep habits. Your budget shouldn’t determine your mattress shopping experience. Everyone who comes through our doors is instantly a part of the Texas Mattress Makers family.

Snooze News Ep. 24: How To Extend The Life Of Your Mattress

How To Increase The Life of Your Mattress

If you listen to a friend or family member that grew up in the 1940-70’s they’ll tell you that if your mattress is uncomfortable, just flip it over. Easy fix, right? NOPE!

Almost all mattresses (more than 90%) that are made or imported into the United States today are not constructed in a double-sided manner – meaning, you can’t flip them!

How To Extend The Life Of Your Mattress

If you’ve read our blog How to Protect Your Mattress & Extends its Life, you are most likely interested in how you can squeeze a few more years out of your aging, uncomfortable mattress. We’ll cut to the chase. The only true way to extend the life of your mattress is to purchase a high-quality, well-constructed mattress (…like the ones we build here at Texas Mattress Makers) and make sure you have the proper support for it. Read more about the importance of a box spring here.

Of course, there are times when a less expensive mattress might be the best choice. For young adults who will be moving a lot and aren’t ready to make an investment as well as children and teenagers – a mattress made with less components but the right amount of support is most likely the best option for you! But, if you do choose to save a few dollars and purchase your mattress made with either fewer or inexpensive materials, you might be replacing it sooner than you think!

Mattress Myths for Extending the Life Of Your Mattress

Here are a few myths:

1. Mattress Toppers

We know what you’re thinking…I’ll just go buy a mattress topper and fix my uncomfortable mattress – no need for a new one – right?!

Wrong.

A mattress cover is designed to keep your mattress clean. But if comfort is your issue, a topper will simply mask the issues that you are having with your mattress for a short time. Wait a few weeks and the problems from your mattress will translate through the mattress topper…now you’re out a few $$ and not happy.

Pro tip: If you are interested in a topper to help keep your mattress fresh, our experts recommend buying one that is both thin and 100% cotton so you don’t sleep hotter due to airflow restriction. Wash it every time you wash your bedsheets to keep it nice and clean!

2. Flip It

To be clear, we are talking flip, like you flip a pancake (the top is now the bottom, the bottom is now the top). While there are some double sided flippable mattresses out there, they are quite rare. If you choose to flip a mattress that was not made to be flipped, you will be very uncomfortable. Plain-and-simple. Don’t do it.

If you’re looking for double sided mattresses, you can shop our Noah Allen Firm or Esteem Firm mattresses.

3. Rotate It

To be clear, we are talking about rotating (the left is now the right, the right is now the left). We don’t recommend this either.

Whether you’re sleeping with a partner in bed or alone, the body impression you make in ‘your side’ of the bed is a good thing.

Rotating the mattress will either make you start over (if you sleep alone), or you’ll assume the body impression of your partner. Both can be very uncomfortable.

Best Mattresses for Cold Sleepers

Best Mattresses for Cold Sleepers

Are you always freezing and can’t sleep at night because you’re so cold? It might sound weird for anyone in Texas but it happens more often than you think! We’ve got the hottest tips and expert recommendations to keep you warm and cozy!

Why Your Mattress Matters

When people are concerned about body temperature as it pertains to their sleep, it’s important to look at the design and components of your mattress. If you sleep hot, you typically want as much space for air to flow (think, innerspring, individually wrapped coils, and latex). But if you’re a cold sleeper, you want your mattress to retain as much of your body heat as possible. There is good news for our cold sleeper friends though – you have far fewer limitations than your hotter sleeping counterparts!

Foam Is Your Friend!

If you’re a cold sleeper, foam is your best friend. In fact, the best mattresses for cold sleepers are probably ones made up of 100% foam. Memory foam was originally developed by NASA but since then has become a mainstay in the bedding industry thanks to its comfort and durability. Memory foam mattresses can come in all types of comfort feels from soft to firm and they provide excellent lumbar support as it contours to your body to help relieve aches and pains.

Expert note: Memory foam may feel firm at first but as you continue to lay on it, it will contour to your body creating a cloud-like feeling.

Sleep Benefits of a Memory Foam Mattress:

  • Minimal Partner Disturbance – Memory foam actually absorbs energy and responds locally to movement which can be helpful if you don’t want to wake your partner when you roll over at night (or vice versa!)
  • Support – Memory foam actually gets softer as you continue to lay on it which creates a cradle-like effect that relieves pressure and provides an even level of support.
  • Adjustable Foundation Compatibility – Memory foam mattresses are the perfect pair for an adjustable foundation. These foundations are beneficial to people who suffer from a variety of ailments from physical pain to insomnia.

100% Foam Mattress

Sleeping cold at night is no joke. Shivering and battling to stay warm interrupts and decreases the quality of your sleep. If you’re serious about getting and staying warm our experts recommend trying out a 100% foam mattress.

Featured Components: This mattresses is made up of 100% foam. However, the density of the foam, type, and height vary to create different levels of comfort from ultra soft to extreme firm.

Why Our Experts Like It: This type of mattress can trap heat more effectively than mattresses designed with different components. This is not ideal for some people, especially those who battle with staying cool. But if you’re a cold sleeper, this is more of a perk than a downfall! Memory foam mattresses are also known to be supportive as well as fit all sleeping positions. So whether you’re a back sleeper who prefers a medium mattress or a combination sleeper who wants to feel like they’re on a cloud, there’s a memory foam mattress for you! Read more about the benefits of memory foam mattresses here.

Expert note: Memory foam may feel firm at first but as you continue to lay on it, it will contour to your body creating a cloud-like feeling.

Sleep Tips for Hot Sleepers

Sleep Tips for Hot Sleepers

Do you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night in a pool of sweat? Sleeping hot at night is not uncommon but it can be unbearable – especially in the summer! Your mattress is most likely the number one culprit that you need to be mindful of if you are a hot sleeper. Our experts recommend investing in a mattress that has the right components that will help you sleep cooler and even wick away your body heat at night.

Check out our best mattresses for hot sleepers!

9 Sleep Tips for Hot Sleepers

Other than your mattress, there are a few things you can do to help lower your body’s temperature and help you get the quality sleep you need to live a healthy and happy life.

1. Go to sleep in the right pajamas

It sounds silly, but wearing the right set of pajamas can actually help keep you cool at night and avoid late-night sweats! Whether you prefer loose-fitting cotton pajamas or a silky option, invest in something that will help you stay cooler at night. Bustle gives a good guide to follow when choosing your nightly attire. Or, if you are feeling up to it you could go to bed in your birthday suit! It has been said that wearing nothing at night actually will help you sleep cooler!

2. Stay hydrated

Drinking water throughout the day will keep you hydrated and promote a healthy lifestyle and good sleep quality. Drinking 8 ounces of cold water before bed is also good for cooling your body’s core temperature and it will prevent you from getting dehydrated at night. Be careful not to overdo it though or you may find yourself having to wake up for a bathroom run!

3. Make sure your room is the right temperature for bedtime

Studies claim that it is ideal to sleep in a room that is between 60-67 degrees. This may not be possible for those of us living in Houston, Texas but try to lower your room’s temperature as much as possible. If you just can’t justify the A/C cost, then you can always invest in a fan to put by your bed that will help cool you down as well.

4. Block out light during the day in your bedroom

You can help keep your room cooler throughout the day by blocking out sunlight throughout the day. Blackout curtains or blinds are great options to help do this.

5. Make sure you choose the right bedding

If you are a hot sleeper and you have a fluffy down-comforter it is no surprise that you are waking up in the middle of the night sweating! Look into purchasing cotton sheets or even a nice set of bamboo sheets that have been said to wick away body heat and help you sleep cooler at night.

6. Avoid late-night exercise

Try to exercise in the morning or during the day rather than too close to your bedtime. Exercising raises your body’s core temperature and will give you energy that in turn creates heat.

7. Take a warm bath or shower before bed

It may seem counterproductive to take a warm bath before bed but when you get out your body’s core temperature drops and this will help promote quality sleep.

8. Get an eye mask that you can freeze

Some people enjoy sleeping with an eye mask because it helps them stay asleep and block out any unwanted light in the morning. Why not take this a step cooler for all you hot sleepers and buy one you can freeze to help make you cooler at night!

9. Leave your bedroom door open at night

Cracking your door will help circulate the air in your room at night and help you get and stay cool. In addition, if you have any other doors that are attached to your bedroom, like a bathroom or even closet door, you can leave those open as well for the same effect.

Sleep Tips for Cold Sleepers

Sleep Tips for Cold Sleepers

If you are cold sleeper there is nothing worse than waking up constantly trying to find ways to stay warm!  Quality sleep is important for your overall physical and emotional health and it can be heavily disrupted if you cannot seem to stay warm at night to stay asleep.  There are tips and tricks you can follow in your night routine that will help you sleep warmer at night and get the rest you need to feel refreshed in the morning!

8 Sleep Tips for Cold Sleepers

1. Drink hot tea (caffeine-free) before bed to help warm your body

When you drink a hot beverage such as tea, you are warming your body and its’ core temperature so that you can reach an optimal point of relaxation necessary for sleep.

2. Wear pajamas that will keep you warm and toasty as you sleep

If you are a very cold sleeper, you may want to look at Flannel or Fleece pajamas.  However, be careful when choosing those because you do not want to overprepare and wake up sweating at night.  Silk pajamas are a great investment as they are great at thermoregulation!  If you are cold it will help keep you cooler but if you start getting warm it will not heat you up so you can sleep peacefully.

3. Wear comfy socks to bed

When your feet are warm, your body’s core temperature tends to stay warm.  Don’t be surprised if you end up getting too warm and kicking them off in the middle of the night.

4. Bundle up with the right blanket.

Choosing the right blanket is important for keeping you warm throughout the night.  A fluffy down comforter will keep you warm throughout the night.

5. Cuddle more!

If your partner isn’t a hot sleeper like you, then you can definitely stay warm by cozying up to each other.  Body heat is a good source of warmth and it will make you feel closer to your partner if you are close throughout the night.  If you’re not too keen on cuddling but you have a four-legged friend then cozy on up with your pet…science says it’s better for you anyway.

6. Do some light yoga stretches before bed.

Moving around and building body heat close to bedtime is good to give you a slight surge of body heat.  Be sure not to overdo it because exercising too close to bedtime will also give you energy and you may find yourself too awake to go to bed.

7. Layer up with your blankets

Get an extra comfy throw blanket, such as a fleece throw, and snuggle up with it before going to bed.  If you get too warm you can always push it aside.

8. Put your PJs in the dryer before bed

Get yourself extra toasty and warm by putting your pajamas in the dryer before hopping into bed.  This feeling of warmth will not last all night but it will make you extra warm just in time to fall asleep and your blanket will do the rest of the work throughout the night.

Remember Your Mattress!

While you can do all the things we mentioned above to help you stay warm at night, nothing is more important than your mattress.  There are mattress components that will help retain body heat and are ideal for cold sleepers.  The good news is, as a cold sleeper you have fewer limitations than hot sleepers in terms of mattress components!

Snooze News Ep. 23: Box Spring 101

box spring guide

Congrats – you’re smart enough to learn the proper way to support your new mattress! The support system under your mattress is often an after-thought in the mattress industry. And if not an after-thought, it’s marketing ‘spin’ to bundle a box spring with a mattress and can be confusing the consumer. Let us break it down for you in this episode of SNOOZE NEWS!

Platform Beds

If you have a platform bed, meaning the bed frame has a solid, flat bottom to place your mattress on, we recommend purchasing a Bunkie Board. This is a low-profile box spring that will properly support your mattress.

Beds with Slats

If you have a bed frame that is constructed with slats (wooden boards that run horizontally from one side of the bed to the other) we recommend that you still get a box spring to properly support your mattress. If you don’t, the bottom of your mattress will develop wave-like indentions compromising the support layer of your mattress.

Metal Bed Frame

Similar to a bed with slats but with less internal structural support, you must purchase a box spring for your mattress. If not, you’ll be sleeping with your mattress on the floor in no time. This also applies to those who are interested in the bed-in-a-box style of mattress. Foam (no matter what the density) will not support you long-term on a metal bed frame…major drooping!

Rules of Box Springs:

  • How Often – if you are replacing a mattress that you’ve consistently slept on for three or more years, we strongly encourage you to purchase a new box spring.  It’s a small investment to make sure your new mattress is properly supported.
  • How Much – our handmade box spring start at only $63. We build our box springs to last for the full lifetime of your new mattress.  Shop our full inventory, including a box spring built to help with acid reflux, at the link below.

Worried about the height of your box spring as it relates to your mattress and/or bed frame? We’ve made a video just for you!

Still confused? That’s OK – we are here to help!

If you have questions or would like to sleep cooler tonight, visit one of our showrooms in East Downtown Houston and Katy, or call us 7-days a week in Houston or Katy.
