Best Mattresses for Hot Sleepers

Best Mattresses for Hot Sleepers

If you find it hard to go or stay asleep at night because you are a hot sleeper, you’re definitely not alone! It is ironic, however, that our body’s core temperature actually drops 1-2 degrees at night. So why do so many people suffer from night sweats or tossing and turning because they are too hot to stay asleep? One of the main reasons for sleeping hot is the design of the mattress they are sleeping on.

Why the Design of Your Mattress Matters

If you’re worried about sleeping hot, it’s important to remember that our bodies are the heat source. Ultimately we sleep hot because the heat from our bodies is absorbed into the surface (mattress) that we are laying on all night. This means that if our mattress is designed with limited airflow, chances are we’ll wake up sweaty and tired.

When you wake up every night kicking the covers off because you’re so hot, you’re losing valuable sleep. But it’s probably not even your fault you get so hot at night. Believe it or not, the design of your mattress may actually be to blame. There are various components in the mattress industry that can help a hot sleeper sleep cooler, like individually wrapped coils, latex, and open-cell foam.

Top Mattress Components For Hot Sleepers:

1. Open Coil/Innerspring: Mattresses that are made with open coil, also known as a traditional coil or innerspring, are still very common mattresses even though there have been many technological advancements in the bedding industry. The open continuous wire design of the mattress allows for air to flow freely and your body heat will have more chance to breathe.

Note from the experts: These mattresses do tend to be less durable than their individually wrapped coil counterpart and are ideal for children or mattresses that are not used every day, such as in guest rooms and rental properties.

2. Individually Wrapped Coil: Hybrid mattresses are made with individually fabric-encased coils. The design has many benefits, one of them being airflow. The construction of the individually wrapped coil system allows your body heat to flow freely throughout the coils, instead of being trapped which is what happens with dense materials, such as foam. Individually wrapped coils can also be used in the comfort layers as well, known as comfort coils, providing even more airflow for a cooler sleep.

How To Sleep Cooler

If you are buying a Hybrid mattress with open coils or individually wrapped coils in the bottom layer and other components in the comfort layer, then it is important to keep these materials in mind as well.

3. Latex: Latex in mattresses has an open-cell structure, with tiny little holes throughout it, allowing air to flow in and out of the material. These perforations create a cooler sleep surface for your body as you lay on it at night because your body heat will have room to move. Some latex mattresses are even infused with certain minerals, such as Graphite, that work to wick away body moisture. It is worth noting that people who are trying to find an alternative to memory foam may find latex to be firmer and bouncier than traditional memory foam.

4. Open Cell Memory Foam: About 10% of people who sleep on traditional Memory Foam components complain that they sleep hot which causes disruptions and decreases their sleep quality. Open Cell Memory Foam was engineered to combat this issue. The open cell structure (similar to latex) allows your body heat to escape easier than traditional memory foam.

At Texas Mattress Makers we have mattresses made with this open-cell foam. Our Serene Foam has tiny microscopic air capsules allowing your body heat to move through the mattress creating a cooler sleep surface while still offering the pressure relief that traditional viscoelastic foam offers.

5. Expert-Recommended Technology: The latest cooling technology our experts at Texas Mattress Makers recently started using is the Ice Blue Quilt Technology. This technology is a phase-changing material in the quilt of the mattress to help regulate your temperature. This is not a “cooling” component, rather a component that works to keep your body temperature neutral. The quilt’s technology works to prevent your body heat from being trapped which is the reason you become hotter as you lay on the surface of your mattress at night. If you’re looking for a mattress with sleeping cool in mind, be sure to ask some questions and go to a store or showroom with experts who can give you latest scoop on what new advancements have been made.

Does “Cooling Gel” Really Keep You Cool?

While there are some components that will help hot sleepers sleep cooler at night and help regulate body temperature, there are some components that are really just marketing hype. One of these components is cooling gel. To understand why mattresses that are made with cooling gel, or cooling gel memory foam, doesn’t actually make you sleep cool at night, you first have to know exactly what the component is.

What is Cooling Gel?

Cooling Gel, or Cooling Gel Memory Foam, is made by injecting liquid gel or microscopic gel beads into visco-elastic memory foam. One of the reasons this was done was because many people enjoy sleeping on memory foam but report sleeping too hot on this product. As a solution, this new, gel-injected product is marketed as helping you sleep cooler at night. However, this is largely misleading to the consumer. While the foam may be cooler to the touch initially, it will not maintain a lasting cooling effect as you continue to sleep on the mattress throughout the night.

If you’re still on the fence or confused about this product and how it does (and doesn’t) work, we offer a quick challenge. Think about a gel pack that you put in the freezer. When you take it out and place it on your body it feels cold, right? But as you keep the pack on your body, it starts to thaw and become warmer. This is because your body (the heat source) is heating up the gel. So why should the gel in your mattress be any different?

Don’t be deceived while you’re shopping – gel-infused foam mattresses might start off cool to the touch, but as you lay on the mattress, it will start to take on the temperature of your body heat, losing its cooling effect and possibly even making you hotter than you would be without it.

What Gel-Infused Foam Is Good For

Just because gel-infused foam can’t keep you cold, does not mean it’s a bad product. What this product can do, is offer pressure relief for aches and pains as well as potentially slow down the heat effect felt with traditional memory foam. However, if you’re a hot sleeper, we encourage you to really think about this component in your mattress before purchasing a mattress based on the hype created in the industry.

Snooze News Ep. 22: How To Sleep Cooler

Sleep Cooler with a new mattress

The Coolest Game Changer

If you’re like us and are braving the humidity of Houston in July, you’re likely turning down the AC and turning up the fans. Like most Houstonians, you’re seeing an increasing amount of ‘how to stay cool in bed’ advertisements. Rather than turning your house into a meat-locker, or buying an expensive fan that circulates air under your sheets (that just seems awkward!), we are excited to introduce a new product that will change the way you sleep!

On top of every mattress is a mattress-topper or quilt. It’s the nice piece of soft fabric that is often colored and sewn in an elaborate pattern as a marketing tool to increase the perceived value of the mattress. Nearly all quilts are made the same – the same materials, patterns, thickness, etc. But now there’s a game-changer. A new piece of technology that will keep you cooler at night by eliminating heat transfer from your body into the comfort layer of your mattress. We are proud to introduce to you the Ice Blue, Cooling Technology Quilt.

Ice Blue Cooling Technology is sewn throughout the quilting of the mattress topper to help keep you temperature-neutral throughout the night.

What’s the Technology?

This is a phase changing material that helps regulate your body temperature as you sleep at night. It does not actually make you sleep cold, but it helps prevent your body heat from being absorbed into your mattress components which makes you hot. In short, the Cooling Technology Quilt isolates and wicks away your naturally occurring body heat before it is able to penetrate the comfort and support layers of your mattress. Ultimately this new product keeps you cooler while you sleep and better rested.

Want to learn more? Watch the video below as Youval explains the Cooling Technology Quilt in detail. The Cooling Technology Quilt can be sewn to fit any of the mattresses produced at Texas Mattress Makers.

If you have questions or would like to sleep cooler tonight, visit one of our showrooms in East Downtown Houston and Katy, or call us 7-days a week in Houston or Katy.

Top 5 Tips to Help Make Your Day More Productive

Top 5 Tips to Help Make Your Day More Productive

Are you in need of inspiration to help make you feel more energetic throughout your day?  Life throws all kinds of hurdles our way and it seems like we are always on the go from the moment our eyes open in the morning.  We have curated 5 common hacks you can make as part of your morning routine to ensure that you have a better day! But first, why is this important?

Why do I need a morning routine?

There are so many articles and books on the importance of creating a morning routine and how this can shape the rest of your day… and future.  Carly Stein, an entrepreneur, and advocate for the My Morning Routine book, summed up the importance of her morning routine when she said, “My routine is there to serve as the building blocks for a successful day. It’s a tool. I try not to get bogged down if I can’t do it all.”  Having a set of rituals you set for yourself that you accomplish at the beginning of your day can help set the tone that you are going to have a productive rest of your day and will motivate you to feel more energetic as you go about your daily activities.

So, here are 5 routines we thought were worth mentioning when you are trying to set up a successful morning routine…

1.  Start the Night Beforemorning routine

A successful morning routine actually starts the night before. Planning for the next day is the best way to jumpstart your morning.

Do you have a meeting at 9 AM?  Knowing this and planning what you will wear and what you need to bring to the meeting will make you feel more prepared and successful for what will happen at the meeting.  No one likes having to feel rushed before going into a meeting and if you have everything you need beforehand you will feel ahead of the game!

Whether you’re planning your meals, laying out your clothes for the next day, or preparing for a big meeting, taking a few minutes to review your calendar ahead of time can alleviate unnecessary pressure and keep you motivated in the morning so you’re more likely to have a productive day.

wake up at your ideal time2. Wake Up At Your Ideal Time…And Avoid The SNOOZE Button!

Getting the proper amount of sleep is essential to feeling good in the morning.  If you are not investing in a good sleep cycle then you are almost ensuring that you will feel tired and sluggish thro

ughout your day.  Go to bed at a decent time where you are able to get the right amount of sleep to feel good and productive throughout the day.

The average Adult needs around 7-9 hours of quality sleep at night to feel refreshed.  Make sure you are getting the proper amount of ZZZ’s to help you stay refreshed and ready for your day.

Also, make it a habit of avoiding that Snooze Button!  Set the alarm to go off when you want to wake up and get out of bed after the first buzzzz.  We all know how tempting that extra snooze time is, and we are all guilty of thinking, “…just 10 more minutes.”  However, when you start the day by procrastinating, you may continue with that type of mindset and behaviors.

work out at home

3. Get Moving

Exercising first thing in the morning might sound like the last thing you want to do when you wake up but it is actually proven to help boost your energy and help you become more focused throughout the day.  Also, as if we needed more reasons than just feeling productive…getting exercise and getting your blood pumping first thing in the morning can also help boost your metabolism and help with weight loss!

Your morning exercise does not have to be a rigorous session in the gym.  Doing a 10 minute Yoga routine or going for a 20-minute walk are also great forms of exercise that can help you be more focused and energetic to face the day!

Make Your Bed4.  Make Your Bed

Starting your day off by completing a task, no matter how simple, can make you feel accomplished from the start.  Soldiers are taught this as the first part of their military training when they are ordered to make their bed every morning.  Admiral William McRaven wrote the famous book Make Your Bed where he talks about the importance of completing this task in the morning.

Making my bed correctly was not going to be an opportunity for praise. It was expected of me. It was my first task of the day, and doing it right was important. It demonstrated my discipline. It showed my attention to detail, and at the end of the day it would be a reminder that I had done something well, something to be proud of, no matter how small the task.

When you have a long list of things to do throughout your day, how great would it feel to have the first thing easily crossed off before you even walk out of your bedroom?

Do Something That Makes You Happy5.  Do Something That Makes You Happy

Waking up early doesn’t have to feel like a chore!  Carving out a few minutes in the morning to devote time to something that makes you smile will make it easier to wake up. Whether it is cuddling with your partner, spending some time with your kids, playing with your fur baby or reading a few chapters from a book, just take the time to do something that makes your day a bit brighter from the beginning. Doing something enjoyable in the morning will help frame your day and lead to a more positive outlook as you go about your normal daily activities.  This will also make forming the habit of waking up early more enjoyable and easier to continue.

A Mattress Component To Help You Sleep Cooler

A Mattress Component To Help You Sleep Cooler

We all want to get a good night’s sleep so that we can perform better during the day and live an overall healthy life. However, it is no secret that being hot at night might be disrupting your sleep quality…especially since we live in Houston, Texas where Summer seems to last half of the year! The suggested bedroom temperature should be between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal sleep. But if you’re having trouble staying cool even with the A/C blaring, there are a number of reasons that you might be sleeping hot at night, and one of them might be your mattress!

Our sleep experts are constantly searching for real technological advancements in the bedding industry that can help our customers sleep better at night and improve the quality of sleep. This is why we are so excited to unveil our new mattress component: The Ice Blue Cooling Technology. This technology is infused directly into the quilt of our Cannes Mattress Line and helps regulate your body temperature as you sleep at night.

Ice Blue Cooling Technology is sewn throughout the quilting of the mattress topper to help keep you temperature-neutral throughout the night.

What’s Ice Blue Cooling Technology?

This is a phase changing material that helps regulate your body temperature as you sleep at night. It does not actually make you sleep cold, but it helps prevent your body heat from being absorbed into your mattress components which makes you hot. Ultimately this product allows for a much cooler and more restful sleep.

At Texas Mattress Makers we only promote components that work and not those that just sound good for marketing. We took this component for a test drive and were surprisingly happy with the results. One of our employees was given this as a topper to place over the mattress and here is what she said:

My fiance sleeps at approximately the temperature of the sun’s surface. Prior to having this product in our home I would wake up to . I am fortunate and am cold all the time, which made it difficult to sleep together and battling over AC and fans was a constant. I am happy to report that after three months of use I no longer wake up to a very sweaty man and a high AC bill. I am ecstatic that during this Texas summer heat we are still snuggling and he is sleeping better at night. – Caitlyn Pesl, Texas Mattress Makers Employee

This Ice Blue technology is an exciting and revolutionary product for the bedding industry. It’s important to understand that the technology does not actually make you cooler but instead, it keeps your body heat from absorbing into the rest of your mattress and therefore regulates your body temperature to remain neutral, preventing your body heat to go up as you sleep at night. We currently have this product featured on our Cannes Mattresses which comes in either a Plush top or Firm feel.

What’s Just Fluff?

We are always testing the latest technologies in our industry and being the manufacturer of our own mattresses gives us the edge and advantage of learning about the latest materials that are being introduced in the sleep industry. When “cooling gel” foam was the new hype, we decided to try out this material and see if it really was a quality product. One thing that we found was that it seemed to be cool to the touch at first and then as you continued to lay on it, it acted just as most foam do and retained body heat. This means that even though you initially feel cool on the mattress, as you continue to lay on it, the cooling feeling goes away and your body heat gets trapped. This is a common reaction for many foam components and the reason why we often recommend latex components or individually wrapped coils for those who need more airflow and a cooler sleep surface.

wake up refreshed after sleeping cool

Want to learn more?

You can see this new technology for yourself at both our Katy and East Downtown locations if you would like to try it out and learn more about the product. If you go to our showroom and you find that you want the product but on a different mattress, please ask one of our showroom experts as we can always make this customization for you when we produce your mattress.

Open Coil vs Hybrid Mattresses

open coil vs pocket spring mattresses

Sleeping on the right mattress is crucial to so many things: To have a good night’s sleep, to be productive the next day, to ensure your spine is aligned correctly, to prevent aches and pains, and to avoid disturbing your significant other.

However, what makes a good mattress is highly subjective. Some people prefer firm surfaces, while others prefer that “melting into the mattress” feeling. In addition, there are those who get too hot while they’re sleeping and want a mattress that promotes airflow, or who prioritize fire retardant materials.

In a world with so many mattress options, it can become pretty confusing trying to decide which choice would work best for you. And one of the most common questions has to do with the basics: What’s the difference between open coil and hybrid mattresses?

Open Coil Mattresses

Open coiled mattresses are also known as Bonnel mattresses or traditional coil innerspring mattresses. They have connected coils within a metal mesh inside of them which causes the unit to move as one. These mattresses often use springs shaped like hour-glasses to help distribute the weight evenly from top to bottom.

Pros

  • Promote airflow for a cooler sleep
  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • Are less durable and tend to dip in the middle
  • Some pressure point discomfort
  • Uncomfortable motion transfer because of the connected coils
  • “Roll together” feel – couples feel when the other person moves

Coil mattresses are a good option for children. These mattresses are on the less expensive side of the spectrum and do not last as long as mattresses made with other components.

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses have hundreds, if not thousands (the higher spring count the better) of individual springs that are stitched into their own individual fabric pockets. Unlike coil mattresses, the individually wrapped coils are not attached to one another. Instead, they move and react to pressure separately, which allows for much more pressure point relief, more support and flexibility within the mattress.

Pros

  • Superior comfort to traditional mattresses
  • Durable material
  • Allows couples to move freely without the other person noticing movement
  • Relief for pressure point pains

Cons

  • Can be extremely heavy and difficult to move
  • People with allergies may have trouble with many of the fillers

When a hybrid mattress has a high spring count (which may vary between 500 to over 6,000) it can be extremely comfortable, especially for adults and couples. They have individual springs that allow for both parties to move separately without feeling their counterpart move. Though they are typically more expensive, they have a longer life expectancy of 7-10 years.
