Houston’s Best Furniture & Mattress Store: 45 Years of Family, Craftsmanship & Community

The Texas Mattress Makers family

Made in Houston. Made for you.

When you shop local, you’re doing more than just supporting a business — you’re investing in people, in craftsmanship, and in a community that cares. That rings especially true at Living Designs Furniture and Texas Mattress Makers, two local businesses proudly serving Houston for over 45 years.

As the best-kept secret in the Houston furniture scene, their success is rooted not just in what they make, but in how they make it, and who they make it for.

A family-owned legacy built on love

Founded by Youval Meicler, these two companies are more than just a business — they’re a family legacy. Over the years, his children, Sarah, Rachael, and Noah, have joined him to help lead and grow the company. But what’s remarkable is that there was never any pressure to join. Youval simply wanted his children to be happy, fulfilled, and good people.

Now, that same spirit of warmth, respect, and integrity guides every decision they make from the shop floor to your living room.

A unique family dynamic that works

What’s it like working side by side with your siblings? Just ask Sarah. She works under her sister Rachael, who leads the company’s marketing, and she credits her sister’s leadership for helping her become the best version of herself within the business.

And for Youval? His greatest pride isn’t in how talented his kids are at business. It’s in the kind of people they’ve become. As he puts it, “The best gift any parent can receive is knowing their children are kind, caring, and good to others.”

Employees are family, too

Behind every handcrafted leather sofa, custom sectional, or premium mattress is a skilled team of artisans and craftspeople, many of whom have been with the company for decades.

Their roles are not replaceable. From expert upholsterers to specialized sewing technicians, these are real people with real expertise. Some employees have seen their children grow up, go to college, and return to work here. This is the kind of place where employee loyalty is earned, not expected, and where every worker is treated like family.

Our customers are at the heart of it all

Here’s what truly sets Living Designs Furniture and Texas Mattress Makers apart: the customer isn’t just a transaction — they become family.

Whether you’re buying a custom sofa in Houston or investing in the best mattress for back pain, the team is committed to making sure it’s the right fit for you. From re-fluffing sofa cushions years later to swapping out a mattress that doesn’t quite work, their customer service goes far beyond the point of sale.

That’s why most of their business comes from referrals and repeat customers. These are real Houstonians recommending what they trust most.

Built on what matters most

At Living Designs Furniture and Texas Mattress Makers, everything begins and ends with people — family, employees, and customers. Whether it’s siblings working together, skilled craftspeople building by hand, or longtime customers returning for their next piece, this company is rooted in meaningful relationships and real connection.

For them, business isn’t just about what you sell, it’s about how you serve.

Handcrafted in Houston. Designed for your life.

Everything here is made locally. Every frame is built using solid wood like red oak, white oak, or cypress — never particleboard. Every sofa and chair cushion is filled with high-resilience foam, thanks to their sister company, Texas Mattress Makers, who are leaders in quality sleep systems built with advanced sleep technology tailored to your personalized needs.

Celebrating 45 Years of Better Sleep in Houston

Celebrating 45 years with Texas Mattress Makers

Why Texas Mattress Makers is Still the #1 Choice for the Best Mattress in Houston

Although March is Sleep Awareness Month, Texas Mattress Makers has been helping people sleep better every month, every year, for the last 45 years. And we’re proud to say that every single mattress we’ve made in that time was crafted right here in Houston, Texas.

For us, this isn’t just a business. It’s a lifelong commitment to helping people find the best mattress for their sleep, their body type, and their lifestyle. If you want to know why Houston has chosen Texas Mattress Makers as its favorite mattress store in Houston, keep reading and get to know us, our mission, and what we can provide for you.

We’re not just a mattress store — we’re mattress experts

In a world filled with cookie-cutter mattress chains and flashy marketing promises, Texas Mattress Makers stands out because we are both the mattress manufacturer and the mattress retailer. For four and a half decades, every single mattress we sell right here at our factory in East Downton, Houston.

When you walk into our showroom, you’re not just browsing rows of products. You’re starting a conversation with people who have spent years studying how mattresses are built, how people sleep, and how to deliver lasting comfort.

As experts, we know every detail that goes into each mattress we design with top-quality materials tested by third-party industry leaders. That’s why we’re known for having the best mattresses in Houston: we don’t sell from stockpiles; we’re creating what you truly need to get great sleep every night.

We understand your unique needs

Everyone sleeps differently, and that means there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all mattress. When we say other brands are “cookie-cutter,” we mean they sell the same few models to every customer. No personalization, no variety.

At Texas Mattress Makers, we take the time to learn about your sleep habits, physical needs, and comfort preferences so we can guide you to the best mattress for your sleep. We’ll discuss everything from pressure points to any comfort needs you or a partner possesses, and we’ll even offer customizations that no other retailer can offer. It’s not just about finding a good deal — it’s about making sure your mattress is the perfect fit for you.

For example, if you come in thinking you want a firm mattress to address your back pain, but your body says otherwise, we’ll tell you the truth. We’ve become known as the place to find the best mattress in Houston because we never sell just to sell. We build relationships and comfort that last.

Built in Houston. Trusted by Texans.

All our mattresses are handcrafted in our Houston-based factory, allowing us to control quality, craftsmanship, and comfort from start to finish. We don’t ship in bulk inventory or outsource materials; every screw, piece of foam, and wooden frame is sourced from the U.S.

Because we build everything locally, we’re able to offer consistent pricing without unexpected increases tied to overseas supply chains.

It’s also because of this local focus and commitment to excellence that we’ve built a reputation for providing the best mattresses in Houston. Over the years, we’ve proudly made mattresses for over 3 million Texans — and we’re just getting started.

Why our customers keep coming back

In an industry where return rates are high, ours are virtually nonexistent. In fact, 99% of our customers are happy with their mattress — and we’re working hard to make that 100%.

We don’t disappear after the sale. We’re in the customer service business, not just the mattress business. If something’s off, we want you to call us. We’ll work with you to fix it because that’s what real service looks like. And when our founder runs into customers on the street and they say, “I’m sleeping great,” it truly makes his day.

That’s the kind of pride that comes from 45 years of doing the right thing, the right way.

Our legacy started in Houston and stays in Houston

The story behind Texas Mattress Makers is just as handcrafted as the products we sell. Our founder started in the furniture industry decades ago, learning how to build quality pieces from the inside out. After years of wholesale manufacturing for big-name retailers, he realized customers weren’t getting what they deserved.

So, he opened up shop and started selling directly to the public. Why? Because he believed that people deserve transparency, expertise, and truly personalized comfort.

That belief is still at the heart of everything we do today. And it’s why generations of Houstonians have come to us for their sleep solutions. They know we care, and we’ve earned their trust.

Looking for the Best Mattress in Houston?

Whether you’re a side sleeper, back sleeper, or someone who just wants to stop tossing and turning, Texas Mattress Makers is your destination for the best mattress for your sleep made by experts, backed by service, and built right here in Houston.

We invite you to come experience what 45 years of local craftsmanship, customer care, and sleep expertise really feels like. When it comes to your mattress, you deserve the best — and the best mattresses in Houston are at Texas Mattress Makers.

With over 45 years of experience and the trust of more than 3 million Texans, Texas Mattress Makers has exactly what you need for the best sleep of your life. Visit any of our Houston-area mattress stores to get started today.

No Price Increases: Why Our Mattresses Aren’t Affected by Tariffs

Texas Mattress Makers mattress with badge that says “Handmade in Texas”

If you’re shopping for a mattress in 2025, you’re likely concerned about how you will be affected by mattress tariffs. Tariffs have become a hot topic lately, and we understand that some buyers already thinking, “Why are mattresses so expensive right now?” are worried about the possibility of mattress tariffs pushing prices even higher.

We’re here to put your worries to rest. Texas Mattress Makers will not be raising our prices on any of our locally manufactured mattresses. Because a mattress is a necessity that can impact every person’s overall well-being, to us, quality sleep is not up for negotiation. While other brands may be forced to raise their prices due to inflation or tariffs, you can count on us to keep our already low prices, low.

Our founder and president, Youval Meicler, explains in detail how we are protecting our customers from the potential of mattress tariffs as a locally owned and operated mattress manufacturer in Houston.

Skip to 2:30 to find out how Texas Mattress Makers is not affected by mattress tariffs.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Texas Mattress Makers will not be raising our prices.
  • Texas Mattress Makers sources all materials from the United States, and every mattress is manufactured in Houston, Texas.
  • Mattresses made in the U.S. that source materials from abroad can be affected by tariffs. Because we do not buy any materials from other countries, we are exempt from total and global tariffs.

Sourced in the U.S., Made in Houston: How we avoid tariffs

Just as we were able to avoid supply chain disruptions in 2020 and beyond, our company and products are not affected by mattress tariffs. Here’s why.

Our materials come from the United States

As the mattress manufacturer, we decide where we source our materials from. Since our beginning, we have always prioritized locally-sourced materials made in the U.S.

  • Our foam products are sourced from Texas and Arkansas
  • Our lumber is from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama
  • Our fabrics are from California, the Carolinas, and Mississippi
  • Our wood is from Louisiana and Texas
  • Our 100% natural latex is CertiPUR-US certified

Everything from our staples to our springs is sourced either locally in Texas or right here in the USA. Because we do not import anything outside of the United States of America, we will not face issues that other mattress companies will face, along with rising prices. Our product sourcing, manufacturing, and delivery processes will all remain the same.

Better quality. Better value. No surprises.

At Texas Mattress Makers, we’ve always taken pride in being locally owned and operated. From the materials we source to the hands that build each mattress, we’re committed to supporting local workers and suppliers — because we believe that the best products are made right here at home. That dedication doesn’t just benefit our community — it benefits you.

Not only do we guarantee the best prices in Houston for top-tier craftsmanship, but thanks to our local operations, we’re also able to protect you from rising costs due to tariffs and global supply chain issues. Our pricing is transparent so that you know exactly what you are buying. This is the Texas Mattress Makers Difference.

“As the president of this company, I can guarantee that our prices will not go up due to tariffs. Our customers have, and always will, come first. You will still get the best prices now and the best quality product.”

Youval Meicler, Founder and President of Texas Mattress Makers

Mattress tariffs – FAQs

What products will be affected by tariffs?

As of April 2025, the United States has implemented a new tariff structure that affects a wide range of imported products (exceptions apply for Canada and Mexico). For example, if you decide to buy clothing that was made in China or Vietnam, skincare products made in South Korea, or need a new car part for your Toyota, these products are likely to have increased costs because they are manufactured or sourced from another country.

Are mattresses affected by tariffs if they are made in the U.S.?

They can be. Julia Forbes, Certified Sleep Coach for U.S. News says, “You have to read the fine print. Beds are technically ‘assembled in the U.S.A.’ — not explicitly ‘made’ anymore.” Let us explain.

Tariffs are expected to impact several American mattress brands, as many popular mattress materials are sourced from outside the United States. Even if they are assembling their products locally, they will still have to pay higher prices for imported materials — and those higher prices will be placed onto you, the buyer.

Texas Mattress Makers sells factory direct mattresses that are made with American materials and manufactured in Houston. No importing means no surprise markups.

Why do mattresses vary so much in price?

To put it simply, mattress prices often reflect the quality of materials used. Lower-cost mattresses are typically made with lower-quality components that may not hold up over time, while higher-end options use premium materials designed for comfort, durability, and support.

At Texas Mattress Makers, we craft every mattress using top-quality materials, but because we’re the manufacturer, we’re able to offer them at fair, factory-direct prices. No middlemen means no markups. Whether you’re shopping on a budget or investing in luxury, every mattress we sell is built for lasting value and tailored comfort.

Why We Are Not Offering a Memorial Day Mattress Sale

Why We Are Not Offering a Memorial Day Mattress Sale

In honor of our 8th annual Memorial Day Matters campaign, all Texas Mattress Makers and Living Designs Furniture showrooms will be closed on Monday, May 26th. Our founder and president, Youval Meicler, does not believe that the message and reverence of Memorial Day should be used to sell mattresses. As a veteran-owned business, here is why we believe Memorial Day matters.

Regaining the Significance of Memorial Day

In America, Memorial Day has almost become “Mattress Day.” Every mattress retailer has seen record sales throughout Memorial Day weekend as families take advantage of their day off by looking for the best Memorial Day mattress deals. However, Memorial Day is not about making purchases — it is a day to pause, reflect, and show respect to our military families.

Where other mattress companies take advantage of this day to make a profit, we close our showroom doors out of respect for the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice defending our country, our freedoms, our family, and our friends.

This is the Texas Mattress Makers difference

Why Memorial Day Matters

We believe America is the great country that it is because we have the freedoms to make the decisions that are best for our families, run businesses, and practice whatever religion we choose. However, the freedoms we are so blessed to have today are paid for by the people who have fought to uphold them.

Because Youval Meicler served in the Israeli Army, he truly understands the heartache and the importance of this solemn holiday. Youval has lost many of his close friends in the service. He has lived the reasons why we must stop and reflect on the sacrifices of the ones we’ve lost each and every Memorial Day.

This is why we encourage everyone to treat this day as a day of remembrance. Instead of spending your time and money at a Memorial Day mattress sale, you could donate your time or efforts to a non-profit organization that supports the families of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country.

Why We Offer a “May Sale” instead of a Memorial Day Mattress Sale

Although we will not be offering a Memorial Day mattress sale, we will be offering a sale all month long so our customers can still enjoy the best mattress deals in Houston whether through in-person or online mattress shopping

You don’t have to sacrifice savings. This sale will be available throughout the month of May, except for Monday, May 26th, when each of our Texas Mattress Makers showroom locations and our Living Designs Furniture showroom will be closed in honor of the men and women who gave their lives for our freedoms. However, you can visit any of our Houston-area showrooms for amazing deals year-round.

How to Wash a Mattress Protector

Someone pulling their mattress protector out of the washing machine

Are you wondering how to wash that essential layer keeping your mattress safe from spills, sweat, and allergens? You’re not alone. Mattress protectors are an important investment for extending the life of your mattress, but many people aren’t sure how to properly clean them without causing damage or reducing their effectiveness.

Learning how to wash a mattress protector is actually quite simple. Most mattress protectors can be machine washed in cold or warm water with mild detergent and then tumble dried on low heat. However, the specific care instructions may vary depending on the material of your protector, whether it’s waterproof, quilted, or made with special cooling technology.

At Texas Mattress Makers, we understand that proper mattress care starts with the right accessories and maintenance. Our experts have put together this comprehensive guide to help you keep your mattress protector clean and functional for years to come. Visit any of our mattress stores in Houston today to find high-quality mattress protectors that are both durable and easy to maintain.

Protect Your Mattress Investment

Are you supposed to wash mattress protectors?

Absolutely, and you should! Your mattress protector works tirelessly as the first line of defense against spills, sweat, dust mites, bed bugs*, and allergens — blocking these substances from ever reaching your mattress itself. Regular cleaning maintains a hygienic sleep environment while significantly extending the lifespan of both your protector and the mattress beneath it.

Many people forget about washing their mattress protector, focusing only on sheets and pillowcases in their regular laundry routine. This oversight can lead to a buildup of skin cells, oils, and other debris that can eventually compromise the protector’s effectiveness and even affect your sleep quality. Just like any other bedding, your mattress protector deserves regular attention to keep performing at its best.

*Continue reading: How to check for bed bugs in a mattress

How often to wash a mattress protector

Under normal conditions, washing every 1-2 months is sufficient. However, if you have allergies, children, or animals sharing your sleep space, consider increasing your monthly washing schedule. Of course, any spills or accidents call for immediate attention regardless of your regular routine.

Your washing frequency might also depend on how you use your bed. Do you eat or drink in bed? Do you sweat heavily at night? Do you have young children who occasionally share your bed? Are you sleeping with pets? All these factors might mean you need to wash your mattress protector more frequently.

Think of your mattress protector as an investment guardian. By keeping this essential barrier clean and functional, you’re safeguarding your mattress — a much more significant investment that should serve you well for 8–10 years when properly protected and maintained.

How to machine wash your mattress protector

Can I wash a mattress protector in the washing machine? More often than not, yes! Properly cleaning your mattress protector doesn’t have to be complicated. Our experts have put together these simple steps to help you maintain this essential barrier and extend the life of your sleep investment.

  1. Start by checking the care label. While most mattress protectors follow similar care instructions, the manufacturer’s recommendations always take precedence. Look for specific guidance on water temperature, drying methods, and any special considerations.
  2. Prepare your washing machine. We recommend washing your mattress protector separately or with similar lightweight items. This prevents excessive agitation that could damage the waterproof barrier or stretchy fitted corners.
  3. Choose the right settings. Select cold or warm water (never hot) and a gentle cycle. Hot water can damage the waterproof membrane in many mattress protectors, while aggressive wash cycles might compromise the elastic or protective qualities.
  4. Use the correct detergent. Select a mild, liquid detergent without bleach, fabric softeners, or harsh chemicals. These additives can break down the protective barriers that make your mattress protector effective against spills and allergens.
  5. Complete a second rinse cycle. This extra step helps remove all of the detergent residue, which is particularly important if you have sensitive skin or allergies. Lingering detergent can irritate skin and reduce the effectiveness of your protector.

How to clean non-machine washable mattress protectors

Some specialty mattress protectors require a gentler approach than machine washing. If your mattress protector washable instructions indicate hand-cleaning only, follow these expert-recommended steps:

  1. Remove the protector carefully from your mattress, taking care not to stretch or tear delicate areas.
  2. Prepare a cleaning solution using lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent. Avoid harsh chemicals that might damage the protective qualities.
  3. Spot clean visible stains by gently dabbing (never rubbing) with a clean cloth dipped in your cleaning solution. Work from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading.
  4. Wipe down the entire surface using a fresh cloth dampened with clean water to remove any soap residue.
  5. Allow your protector to dry completely before returning it to your mattress. We recommend air drying in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, which can degrade certain materials over time.

Remember, proper care of your mattress protector is an essential part of maintaining your overall sleep system. At Texas Mattress Makers, we believe that quality sleep starts with quality products that are properly maintained. That’s why we offer only the best rated mattress covers designed to deliver years of reliable performance with minimal maintenance.

When to buy a new mattress protector

Even the highest quality mattress protectors don’t last forever. While regular washing mattress cover procedures will extend its lifespan, most quality protectors should last between 1-3 years with proper care. However, there are clear signs that indicate when it’s time to shop for a new mattress protector:

  1. Visible tears or holes have developed in the fabric or waterproof layer. Even small punctures can allow liquids to seep through to your mattress.
  2. The elastic has lost its grip, causing the protector to shift or bunch up during the night. This is particularly common in king or queen mattress size protectors, which need to maintain tension across a larger surface area.
  3. Stains persist despite proper cleaning. If your mattress protector remains discolored after following our washing instructions, its protective qualities may be compromised.
  4. The waterproof barrier fails. Test this by placing a small amount of water on the surface — if it soaks through, the waterproof membrane is no longer effective.
  5. You notice an increase in allergy symptoms while sleeping. This could indicate that allergens are penetrating a worn-out protector.

Do you need a mattress protector? Absolutely, especially if you’ve invested in a quality mattress. A new mattress protector is a small price to pay compared to replacing your entire mattress prematurely due to stains, allergens, or moisture damage.

Find Your Perfect Mattress and Protector at Texas Mattress Makers Today!

Can you wash a mattress protector? The answer is a resounding yes — washing a mattress protector can keep both you and your mattress clean, and knowing how to wash a mattress protector properly is essential for maintaining both your protector and the mattress beneath it.

Where to Find an Affordable Latex Mattress

Exterior view of a Texas Mattress Makers store

While online forums like Reddit can be incredibly useful if you’re searching for where to buy an affordable latex mattress, you may already be overthinking it. Luckily, you don’t have to scroll through hundreds of posts and comments to get the answer — you can find the best-rated latex mattress for lower prices at Texas Mattress Makers, right here in Houston.

Due to its many benefits, a natural latex mattress can be more expensive than traditional mattress types like memory foam. Though it is considered a luxury component, we believe that luxurious sleep shouldn’t break the bank. Here is why you should shop at Texas Mattress Makers for your latex mattress.

3D image of a latex mattress with an individually-wrapped coil component

Are latex mattresses worth the money?

While a latex mattress is a great option that can suit a wide variety of sleepers, the price tag is a common reason many customers opt out of their purchase and choose a cheaper alternative. Natural latex is considered a luxury material because it has to go through a meticulous process to keep the component clean, durable, and high-quality.

Some retailers blend synthetic materials with latex and claim their products are 100% all-natural, which is a flat-out lie. If you want to see if a latex mattress is legit, check to see if it’s certified by CertiPUR-US® — and if you’re wondering, the answer is yes: all latex products from Texas Mattress Makers are certified. Similar to premium leather designer handbags, natural latex will perform and last longer than traditional mattress store products.

If you want a mattress that will provide many benefits (more on this below) including elite comfort and optimal support that can last a lifetime, yes, latex mattresses are worth every penny. However, that does not mean you have to shell out a fortune to sleep on a luxury mattress.

How Texas Mattress Makers makes affordable latex mattresses

Finding a top-quality, affordable latex mattress is easy because of our factory business model.

  • We’re the manufacturers. Each of our latex mattresses is produced in our on-site Houston factory by our own staff. Getting to set our own prices for our locally-made latex mattresses and save on third-party fees allows us to pass those savings onto you.
  • We source responsibly. We supply our latex components from Talalay Global, the world’s largest producer of latex and the only manufacturer in the United States. No excessive international fees means more savings for the customer.
  • We make mattresses that will last. If you invest in a latex mattress that is incredibly durable and high-quality, you likely will never have to spend another penny on a new mattress (unless you decide to buy more, of course).

Best affordable latex mattress: Our expert picks

Texas Mattress Makers offers two top-quality natural latex mattresses for unbeatable prices in Houston.

  1. Hybrid Plus Natural Mattress
This hybrid mattress features two layers of perforated and mineral-infused latex for soothing comfort in any sleep position. The latex’s cell structure gently lifts the body for premium support while contouring to your spine without cratering for a cloud-like sensation. Our customers adore this best-selling mattress because of its versatility and ability to give the sleeper the deep, pain-free rest they deserve.
  1. Quantum™ Natural Mattress
Paired with our ultra-supportive Quantum™ Coil component, this natural latex mattress is the pinnacle of luxury for a price that other competitors can’t beat in terms of the quality and longevity of the product. Our customers love this award-winning mattress because they know they have found their “forever mattress.”

What to know before choosing a latex mattress – FAQs

The mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers answer frequently asked questions about latex mattresses.

What is latex made from?

Because latex is more associated with medical gloves or apparel, it can be confusing to hear that a mattress is made of latex. What is a latex mattress? Simply put, a latex mattress features a latex component in the comfort layer instead of traditional foam. Here’s how it’s made.

Latex is a liquid extracted from the sap of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis, also known as the Pará rubber tree) most often found in South America. At Texas Mattress Makers, all of our latex mattresses are made using the Talalay method with 100% natural latex, not a synthetic blend. In construction, the liquid latex is whipped, poured into a mattress mold, and baked until it forms a soft mattress material that is frozen and then heated to set its final consistency.

We do not use any chemicals during the mattress manufacturing process, so our customers can sleep on non-toxic, handmade mattresses for a restful sleeping experience. Latex is a clean component that comes with many benefits for the sleeper.

Who could benefit from a natural latex mattress?

Because there is a long list of latex mattress benefits, we could recommend a latex mattress to any sleeper. Here are a few examples:

  • Those who struggle with allergies: Looking for the best hypoallergenic mattress? Natural latex is dust mite resistant and antimicrobial, meaning no unwanted organisms can penetrate the mattress, keeping your allergies at bay as you sleep. Even if you’re allergic to latex itself, our latex mattresses are washed as part of the manufacturing process, removing the proteins that cause allergic reactions.
  • Sleepers who struggle with chronic pain: Latex is a great solution for shoulder pain, back pain, or any other joint discomfort because of its natural elasticity. Latex can provide pressure point relief as it cradles your body while providing proper support so you can wake up pain-free.
  • Those who sleep hot: Natural latex has an open rubber cell structure that allows air to flow through easily, allowing your body heat to escape the mattress for a cooler, more restful sleep.
  • Eco-conscious shoppers: Natural latex is an eco-friendly component that is harvested from trees that can produce sap for up to 30 years without being cut down.
  • Budget-friendly shoppers: Although latex comes with a higher price tag, its impeccable durability allows it to last longer than typical components so you may never have to replace your mattress again.

How many years does a latex mattress last?

High-quality, natural latex mattresses are built to last 10–20 years on average, but if properly taken care of, they can last a lifetime. Investing in a latex mattress allows you to have a supportive and comfortable mattress that can last twice as long as any mattress you’ll buy from a standard retailer.

Here are some tips for how to take care of a latex mattress:

  • Use a mattress protector
  • Clean your mattress often
  • Avoid unnecessary sunlight exposure

Contrary to what the internet says, you do not need to rotate your mattress every six months. This does nothing to maintain the health of your mattress.

The Search is Over. Purchase an Affordable Latex Mattress for the Quality Sleep You Deserve.

If you buy an affordable latex mattress from another store or brand, you’ll likely have to replace it in a few years. If you buy a natural latex mattress from Texas Mattress Makers, you can reap the many benefits of your luxury bed for decades or more. You do the math.

Our lower, factory-direct prices and commitment to excellent quality make our latex mattresses irresistible to those looking to experience their best night’s sleep. Choosing which mattress is right for you can be a challenge — but you don’t have to do it alone.

What to Expect When You’re Breaking in a Mattress

Young woman reading on her bed

Buying a new mattress is such a rewarding accomplishment. You’re finally set to enjoy the quality sleep you deserve and the healthier, happier life that comes with it. But sometimes, the experience of climbing into bed on that very first night can be a little unexpected.

Why is my new bed hurting my back? Oh no, do I hate my new mattress? What am I going to do? If these questions have ever crossed your mind when sleeping on a new mattress, you’re not alone. These anxieties typically arise when customers are uninformed about breaking in a mattress, and that’s why we’re here to put your worries to bed.
The mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to educate you on what to expect when you’re breaking in a mattress, how to break in a mattress, and how long the period will last.

1. The break-in period

We understand that a pair of new shoes needs to be worn over time to reach their optimal comfort level — well, mattresses are the same way. Breaking in a mattress takes time and patience to ensure that your new bed feels as comfortable as possible for you.

How long does it take to break in a mattress? The break-in period can vary depending on the type of mattress you purchased. A new mattress will typically take 30 – 60 nights to fully adjust to your body. After that time has passed, your bed should feel as comfortable and supportive as you imagined it.

Texas Mattress Makers offers a Comfort Guarantee where if you’re still not satisfied with your mattress after 90 nights when the break-in period has passed, we will do whatever it takes to help. Please read the full guarantee to be aware of what is and isn’t covered in our factory warranty.

2. Initial stiffness or firmness

Let’s stick with the shoe analogy: when you try on a pair of shoes in the store, you’ll notice that they’ll feel stiff; new shoes made with fresh materials need time to adjust and mold to your feet before they feel perfect.

A new mattress is made with fresh, untouched components, and these materials can feel quite firm until they are broken in. Early on, you’ll notice this firmness or stiffness in the components, but they will soften up over time as they adjust to your body.

Expert Tip: If you feel that your new mattress is too firm, you can accelerate the break-in process by walking on the mattress (without shoes, of course). This technique opens the cells in the components, which will soften them up faster.

3. Slight discomfort

Why is my new bed hurting my back? Is this supposed to happen? When you sleep on your new mattress for the first few nights, the initial stiffness or firmness of the materials could result in mild discomfort. Some people experience minor aches and pains as their body adjusts to the new support and alignment provided by the mattress. It’s completely normal and nothing to worry about.

As you and your new mattress adjust to one another, you shouldn’t feel any discomfort. To avoid prolonged discomfort, sleep on your new mattress consistently every night to give your bed enough time to get used to your body. If you’re still feeling any pain after the break-in period, you can seek additional support by contacting us with your concerns.

4. In-store vs. home feel

You typically buy the stiff, new pair of shoes you tried on in the store, but you won’t know how they will perform until they’ve been broken in. What if you don’t like the way they feel? What if they don’t live up to your expectations? What if they’re not right for your feet? If you’re investing in something as important as shoes or a mattress, you want to be certain that your choice is the best option for you.

If you took your new bed home and thought, “Why does my mattress not feel like it did in the store?” This is normal and intentional to eliminate any confusion about what you’re buying. At Texas Mattress Makers, our showroom models are already broken in so that our customers can feel exactly how their new mattress will feel AFTER the break-in period. This provides a better idea of how future sleep will feel on that particular mattress.

Put simply, you try out a broken-in mattress in-store to understand how it will perform; then, we send you home with a fresh mattress that will conform to your body over time for optimal comfort.

5. Body impressions

If you’re still wondering why breaking in a mattress is even necessary, we have the answer: to form body impressions. As mentioned before, the break-in period allows your mattress components to adjust and conform to your body for better support and comfort. Over time, this can lead to a (sometimes) visible imprint on the mattress.

My mattress has dips where I sleep! If you notice a slight indentation where your body usually lies, this is a body impression. These are not the same as sags or dips, which indicate a structural issue with the mattress. A mattress dent or dip usually looks like a crater in a particular area, whereas an impression will have curves imitating your body shape.

The body impression is a natural compression that helps support your spine and keeps you comfortable throughout the night. It is essential for getting quality sleep each night.

What is the best way to break in a mattress?

The answer is simple: consistent sleep — but there’s also a way to speed up the process!

  1. Sleep on it every night even if it feels a little uncomfortable at first. This will help your mattress (and body) adapt more quickly.
  2. Walk on your mattress to accelerate the break-in period. A little-known trick we use in our showrooms is walking on the mattress to help open up the materials faster. This works especially well for foam and hybrid mattresses, as it helps expand the cells and soften the feel. It’s a mix of time and effort — not just waiting for it to adjust on its own.
  3. Avoid jumping or applying excessive pressure. Does jumping on a mattress help break it in? No, it doesn’t. While walking on the mattress can help break it in, jumping on it is not recommended. Excessive pressure can damage internal components and shorten its lifespan.
  4. Give it at least 60 nights before deciding. If it still feels firmer or less comfortable than expected, patience is key. But if after 90 nights you’re still not satisfied, our Comfort Guarantee has you covered.

Mattress Manufacturer vs. Mattress Retailer: Which Is Better?

Expert craftsmen at Texas Mattress Makers hard at work

Which is better to buy a mattress from: a mattress manufacturer or a mattress retailer? This is an age-old question that consumers are still asking today. The differences between a mattress manufacturer and a mattress retailer cannot be ignored during your mattress shopping journey.

When most people think of mattress shopping, they picture visiting a mattress retailer like Mattress Firm or IKEA or shopping online on Amazon or Casper. These places have many brick-and-mortar stores across the country where they sell a variety of mattresses of differing types, brands, and prices.

While the idea of having many popular brands in one store may seem like a great selling point for mattress consumers, mattress chains that sell mass-produced, one-size-fits-all products do more harm than good to the buyer.

Why should consumers shop at a mattress manufacturer?

Where retail stores act more as distributors for large brands, a mattress manufacturer like Texas Mattress Makers is able to produce and sell their own mattresses for lower prices because they remove any middleman markups you find at traditional retailers. You would be surprised what this difference means for your buying experience.

Our founder, Youval Meicler, combined his knowledge of mattress manufacturing and business to create a mattress destination where customers could buy a mattress directly from the source for less money, guided by the expertise of real-life mattress experts.

Expert craftsmen at Texas Mattress Makers hard at work

According to users on Reddit, local mattress manufacturers are a rare gem and the best source for purchasing a mattress due to their low prices and high-quality products. Well, if you live in the Houston area, you’re in luck! As a mattress manufacturer and mattress retailer, we have multiple locations conveniently located for you to experience our vast selection of mattresses at a fraction of what you’d pay elsewhere.

Experience the Difference

Mattress manufacturer vs. mattress retailer

What is the best company for mattresses? The answer is clear. Here’s why you should choose a quality, handmade mattress from Texas Mattress Makers over a normal mattress store.

First-party vs. third-party prices

Are mattresses cheaper at a mattress store? Surprisingly, no. Because a retailer sells mass-produced beds from other big mattress brands, you, as the consumer, will be subjected to high price tags from both the brand and the third-party costs the store itself has to cover. This can make an already expensive mattress even more costly. Additionally, some retailers will cut corners on these costs by using poor quality materials, leading to mattresses that break down and need replacing sooner.

When you buy factory-direct mattresses from the manufacturer, you only pay for the components used to make your mattress and the delivery fee (if you choose to have your mattress delivered). Producing our mattresses on-site with locally sourced materials and suppliers allows us to cut out the middleman, eliminating any unnecessary fees and resulting in lower prices for you!

Lower prices for higher quality mattresses: it’s a no-brainer why our customers choose Texas Mattress Makers over the big chain stores.

Experts vs. salespeople

Mattress retailers tend to employ thousands of people who all share a common goal: to sell mass-produced mattresses. Their training may cover the mattress brands and their benefits, but not each mattress’s build and functionality — what makes each mattress special. This can result in an impersonal shopping experience where you could take home a mattress that isn’t right for you. At the end of the day, they are salespeople — not experts.

Every employee at Texas Mattress Makers knows the ins and outs of every component, material, and process used to create our handmade mattresses. This unmatched mattress expertise provides an informative and truthful buying experience for every customer so that you can leave with the perfect mattress for your needs.

No pushy salespeople; just highly-trained, knowledgeable, and helpful mattress experts.

Local stores vs. national chains

Big mattress retailers are still suffering from material shortages left over from the pandemic, meaning you could be waiting months to get a new mattress. On top of the delay, your new mattress could be made with cheaper, lower-grade materials sourced from outside of the U.S. or infested with harmful fiberglass. When you don’t know where your mattress was made, there’s no guarantee that you will obtain a high-quality mattress.

When choosing between mattress stores, local is the way to go. Shopping at Texas Mattress Makers, one of the best mattress manufacturers in Texas, comes with many benefits:

  • Supporting a local, family-owned business in Houston
  • Knowing exactly where and how your mattress was made
  • Enjoying a simpler and less stressful mattress shopping experience
  • Buying a mattress with the highest quality materials available
  • Supporting local suppliers who provide our materials made in the USA
  • Enjoying lower, factory-direct pricing
  • Getting your mattress faster with no delays and quick delivery

Every mattress we sell is made by talented, expert craftsmen in our on-site factory in the heart of Downtown Houston. Whether you’re in Memorial, Katy, or The Woodlands, we create top-quality mattresses because you deserve only the best selection in the Houston area.

Texas Mattress Makers: Houston’s Best Mattress Manufacturer

The truth is, you will not find your perfect mattress at a regular mattress retailer. While they are in the business of selling you a mattress, a mattress manufacturer and retailer like Texas Mattress Makers is in the business of providing you with the best night’s sleep possible. With our help and expertise, you will take home a mattress that will improve your quality of sleep and quality of life.

Every mattress we produce has undergone rigorous mattress testing where the results were clear: our components surpassed industry standards, meaning our beds are better than our competitors in terms of quality, comfort, and durability.

Is Memory Foam Good for Your Back?

Young woman sitting on her bed holding her back

If you’re struggling with back pain from a bad mattress, it’s time to start thinking about purchasing a new bed. But with so many options to choose from, it can be hard to know which is the best mattress for back problems

Since foam mattresses have been a popular choice for decades, many customers wonder, is memory foam good for your back? The answer isn’t exactly straightforward; it just depends on how supportive the mattress is for your body.

Our mattress experts are here to dive into the wondrous world of memory foam mattresses: their benefits, their drawbacks, and how to know which kind of foam mattress is best for your needs and your back.

What is memory foam?

In the 1960s, NASA commissioned Charles Yost, an aeronautical engineer, to make aircraft cushions more comfortable for test pilots during flights — and memory foam was born. Memory foam is a “closed cell” foam mattress component that was designed to absorb pressure and provide more resistance than traditional foams for added support. Its ability to contour to the body’s curves and provide a soft cushion for pressure points made it a popular choice for mattress construction going forward.

The memory foam mattress misconception

It’s become a common misconception that because memory foam mattresses are soft, they are inherently bad at supporting the back. So, is a firm mattress better for your back? Not necessarily. People tend to believe that a firm surface equals more support, which is not always true.

Now, that’s not to say that some memory foam mattresses could cause back pain — there are some bad mattresses out there — but this will only happen if the mattress is poor quality or not the right fit for that person.

Simply put, whether or not a memory foam bed is good for your back will depend on what the supportive components are made of, the quality of the memory foam, and whether it is the right fit for your body type and personal needs.

How memory foam could support back health

Memory foam as a component does have many great qualities that can help ease back pain for a more comfortable night’s sleep.

  • Spinal alignment: Memory foam mattresses can be great solutions for back pain because the foam will mold to the natural curve of your spine as you sleep, keeping it in alignment.
  • Pressure relief: The cushion of the foam is soft and easy on your joints, eliminating aches and pains in places like your lower back.
  • Adjustable friendly: Because memory foam is compatible with most adjustable mattress bases due to its flexibility, a memory foam adjustable bed is easy to come by. Adjustable bases help you sleep in the most comfortable position possible with little effort and are a great investment no matter which mattress you choose.

In case you were curious, here are some other benefits of memory foam to consider when mattress shopping:

  • Motion isolation: The density of the foam absorbs movement to stop motion transfer. This means that you won’t feel your partner toss and turn or get in and out of bed for minimal disturbances as you sleep.
  • Durable: Quality memory foam is quite durable and can last for many years.

Now, while this all sounds good and dandy, there are a few cons that we share with customers when they are considering purchasing a memory foam mattress.

Disadvantages of memory foam

As far as memory foam has come in the mattress industry, it is not always the best option for every sleeper. Here are some common disadvantages of memory foam to be aware of.

  • Not ideal for hot sleepers: Traditional memory foam’s viscoelastic properties make it temperature-sensitive, and its closed-cell structure traps heat in the mattress. Because your warm body heat makes the mattress feel softer, some sleepers find this experience more suffocating than relaxing.
  • Sinking and cradling: The softness of the memory foam can create a sinking or cradling feeling that isn’t always pleasant if you prefer a firmer feel to your mattress.
  • Off-gassing: Traditional memory foam can sometimes have an off-putting chemical-like smell. Some mattress manufacturers (not us, of course) create them with harsh chemicals that can release off-gassing or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that leave a persistent odor in the mattress for weeks at a time.

All of our foam products are certified by CertiPUR-US®, meaning they are made in the United States without phthalates regulated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

So, if a memory foam mattress doesn’t seem like a good match, is there anything better than a memory foam mattress? Let us show you our foam components which are great memory foam alternatives.

Which kind of foam mattress is best?

Here at Texas Mattress Makers, we offer memory foam alternatives that may be more beneficial to sleepers who may not vibe well with the feeling of this type of foam. We actually carry a variety of different foam components that produce extra benefits such as improved breathability, moisture-wicking, and more.

Serene™ Foam

Serene™ foam is a newer foam technology that improves the material’s breathability for a cooler night’s sleep. Unlike traditional memory foam’s closed-cell structure, Serene™ foam is an open-cell, meaning that the cells create “bubbles” that allow air to move more freely throughout the foam. This ultimately helps create a cooler sleeping surface while maintaining a cloud-like plush feel. We use Serene™ foam in the comfort layers of our foam mattresses for a luxurious sleep experience.

High-density foam

We heard the misconception that foam can’t be supportive and decided to prove the industry wrong. Our high-density foam is a firmer foam, making it an ideal base layer for support in each level of our 100% Foam Mattress. Placing this high-performance foam underneath our foam comfort components gives it durability and structure for proper back support while you enjoy the comfort of our pain-relieving foam mattresses.

High-resilience foam (HR foam)

If you are not a fan of the sinking feeling that memory foam can have, the resilient properties of our HR foam keep you on top of the mattresses without sinking. Instead of a crater, the resilience will help the foam mold to your body and support your lower back as you sleep. You can switch sleep positions freely, get in and out of bed easily, and still enjoy the cozy feeling of a foam mattress without feeling trapped. You can find this foam in the soft, medium, and firm feels of our 100% Foam Mattress. Shop the collection in the link below.

The Long-Term Effects of Sleep Deprivation

Depressed woman in bed struggling with sleep deprivation

While the many dire consequences of sleep deprivation are common topics of discussion, getting quality sleep is something that is not taken seriously enough. In fact, American culture tends to deprioritize sleep in favor of work or play, even though sleep is the key to living a long and healthy life. In fact, you may be struggling with the effects of sleep deprivation and not even know it.

We want to help change that.

In honor of National Sleep Awareness Month, our mattress experts are here to discuss the long-term effects of sleep deprivation and how it impacts your physical and mental health. If you want to live a long, happy, and healthy life, prioritizing quality sleep is essential — and buying the right mattress is the first step.

A young man comfortably rests in bed with a sleep mask, exuding relaxation and joy.

Say Goodbye to Sleepless Nights

What are the main symptoms of sleep deprivation?

Sleep deprivation occurs when you consistently do not get the rest you need each night. How much sleep do I really need? The average person needs 7 – 9 hours of quality sleep each night to feel the full benefits of sleep.

Notice how we say “quality” sleep; if you’re lying awake, tossing and turning, or experiencing frequent disruptions, you’re not getting good sleep. Experiencing poor sleep or not enough sleep will result in sleep deprivation symptoms.

Here are the signs you’re not getting enough sleep:

  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Lack of energy
  • Mood swings and irritability
  • Memory problems
  • Trouble focusing
  • Poor appetite
  • Feelings of weakness
  • Poor balance or coordination

While these sleep deprivation symptoms are mostly temporary and can be fixed by implementing a consistent sleep schedule, the risks of sleep deprivation will result in far worse consequences than falling asleep at your desk. Your health and overall quality of life will suffer without sufficient sleep.

Long-term consequences of chronic sleep deprivation symptoms

Dealing with a bit of daytime fatigue every now and then won’t ruin you; however, neglecting your sleep quality night after night will have dire consequences on your daily life. Here are the long-term effects of sleep deprivation.

  • Mental health problems
  • Weakened immune system
  • Weight gain
  • Heart disease and other health conditions
  • Reduced libido

Mental health problems

Studies have shown that poor sleep is a large contributor to mental health problems like anxiety, depression, and chronic stress. How does lack of sleep affect the brain? When we sleep, our brain performs many processes and cycles that help to regulate our emotional and physical health. While these mental health problems can look different to each individual, the bottom line is that without sufficient sleep, our brains can’t function properly throughout the day.

Weakened immune system

Are you someone who is always getting sick? The cause might be your poor sleep quality. One of the more overlooked consequences of sleep deprivation is a weakened immune system. Without sufficient sleep, your immune system can’t produce enough cytokines (proteins that promote sleep and reduce inflammation) to fight off infections and illnesses. Over time, you will become more susceptible to illnesses and have a longer recovery time. A weakened immune system can lead to dangerous conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Weight gain

Exercising, eating healthy, and drinking enough water are all great ways to lose weight — but if you’re not sleeping well, you won’t see or feel the results of your hard work. Continuous lack of sleep makes it harder for your brain to regulate your appetite, resulting in increased food intake and weight gain over time. Sleep deprivation also robs your body of energy for your workouts, reduces muscle recovery, and slows down your metabolism, all essential factors for a fit and healthy body.

Heart disease and other health conditions

As we mentioned earlier, a weakened immune system can make you more susceptible to serious health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and hormonal imbalances. Sleep allows your body to fulfill all of the necessary regulatory processes that keep your body functioning and healthy. If those processes get interrupted consistently…well, things will stop working.

For example, sleep deprivation causes your body to become less efficient at using insulin which can result in an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes from high blood sugar levels. These chronic conditions will impact your quality of life, are expensive to treat and manage, and can be fatal in certain cases. Overall, it’s not good.

Reduced libido

Sleep and libido go hand-in-hand with mental health. Your brain is responsible for regulating all of your sex hormones to ensure they stay balanced for a healthy sex drive.

Chronic sleep deprivation lowers the body’s estrogen and testosterone levels, decreasing your desire for sex overall. Exhaustion coupled with declining mental health can severely impact your ability to be emotionally and physically intimate with a partner. The long-term effects of that could hurt your relationship and self-esteem.

What causes sleep deprivation?

Multiple factors can contribute to why someone doesn’t get enough sleep. Just to name a few examples:

  • They suffer from a sleep disorder like insomnia or sleep apnea
  • They struggle with chronic pain
  • They have an uncomfortable sleep environment
  • They have caffeine or alcohol too close to bedtime
  • Their work schedule throws off their sleep schedule
  • They’re sleeping on a bad mattress

Whether it’s a health issue, a lifestyle issue, a sleep environment issue, or a mattress issue, addressing the root of your sleep problems can help prevent sleep deprivation.
