A #HoustonStrong Year After Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey managed to destroy so much of our city. However, perhaps more than any other event within living memory, it made us even stronger than we were before. As a community, we came together to prove our commitment to the place we call home and our neighbors.

Hurricane Harvey’s Effect on Houston and Surrounding Areas

In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, every person in the Greater Houston Area (along with many others) was affected in some way by the storm.

Hurricane Harvey’s Effect on Houston’s Small Businesses

Hurricane Harvey took a major toll on our local economy and many small businesses suffered.

Effect on Texas Mattress Makers

The aftermath of Hurricane Harvey was very difficult for our local business as well. We were forced to close our own doors for several days following the disaster due to the storm. On top of this, we found ourselves grappling with the consequences of a storm on this scale: increased costs.

Due to the lapse in the supply chain, rising transportation costs, and surge in demand, mattress components would see price increases across the board. Foam alone, for example, would rise four times within a 6-month period. Innersprings would also rise in cost as the steel industry struggled to cope with demand. We soon found ourselves struggling to maintain the low prices our customers enjoy inside our showrooms.

Thankfully, as a manufacturer with 30 years in the industry, we were able to negotiate hard with our suppliers to provide pricing relief for our customers. In addition to keeping our prices low despite these increases, we assisted our community as much as possible. We made several donations to struggling families and offered special pricing for those affected by the storm. We are proud to do our small part, but we know our community needs time to recover. With this in mind, we continue to offer pricing assistance to those still recovering from this devastating event.

#HoustonStrong in the Face of Disaster

Hurricane Harvey destroyed so much of our city. However, perhaps more than any other event within living memory, it made us even stronger than we were before. So many people saw the devastation to their homes that would ultimately wipe out their life’s savings. And yet most people would decide to stay. As a community, we came together to prove our commitment to our neighbors and the place we call home.

Houston Children’s Charity, our sister charity, teamed up with Astros shortstop Carlos Correa to form Harvey Children’s Relief fund. Together with many generous businesses, organizations, and individuals, they were able to raise $500,000 to provide 5,000 beds to families affected by the storm. Missions on Wheels was able to deploy its first disaster relief trailer to areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. These trailers provide a shelter for emergency response teams and were equipped with mattresses provided by Texas Mattress Makers.

We are so proud of the efforts of Houston Children’s Charity, Missions on Wheels, and the other organizations which mobilized to meet the needs of our city. Our community pulled together to prove that in the face of disaster, we are not just able to rebuild. We are truly #HoustonStrong.

We Treat You Like Family

Youval and customer

If you are familiar with the way things work in our showrooms, you know our customers are our top priority. This means we not only want you to get your best night’s sleep, we also want you to leave happy. Texas Mattress Makers is one of the few businesses in Houston that continues to not only make our own products, but remains family owned and operated.

Youval Meicler founded this company in 1989. He is not only featured in our commercials and segments, but continues to work hard to maintain our company standards. His eye is always on the ball, from quality control to negotiating hard with materials vendors so we can lower our prices. He is often inside our showrooms, working with people one on one to help them find the best bed for their sleep. He instills this mentality into each employee so no matter who you work with, you are always considered family.

Youval and customer

Introducing Delilah

Youval was working in the showroom recently when he met a little girl named Delilah. Delilah is 10 years old and was visiting her grandparents who live in Livingston, Texas. She came into the showroom with her grandmother, and immediately recognized Youval from one of his appearances on TV. She was absolutely flabbergasted to meet a person she considered a genuine celebrity. Astonished by her excitement to meet him, Youval was more than happy to oblige when she asked for a photo.

It has only been 4 years since Youval first began making appearances on TV. Originally reluctant to make public appearances, he was finally persuaded to lend his voice to commercials. Eventually, he discovered that his work with the community made it impossible for him to avoid the public eye forever. He now regularly appears on local morning shows in Houston and continues to represent Texas Mattress Makers at numerous charity events.  For him, educating the public about the importance of sleep is his number one priority in life.

Once Youval saw Delilah’s face light up when he agreed to a photo, he immediately offered to post her picture on our website. The little girl was thrilled. When Youval realizes he can do something to make someone happy he jumps at the chance to make it happen. “I’ll be famous like you!” Delilah exclaimed. A picture may say a thousand words, but a few happy words from our customers are priceless.

4 Ways to Commemorate Our Fallen Heroes

American flag

Take Time to Remember Our Fallen Heroes

Memorial Day is a day to honor those that gave their life so that we can have the freedoms that we enjoy today.

Set aside a moment to remember the fallen and be thankful for your freedom.  Think about the sacrifice others have made and how this has a lasting impact on your daily life.

Teach your children the significance and importance of the holiday. We can only preserve the significance of this holiday by passing it along to the next generation.

Look After Veterans’ Health and Well-being

Many veterans have lost close friends in the line of service. If you know a veteran, make sure they know that you are there for them and it is always ok to seek help.

Make sure your veteran is getting enough sleep, exercise, and eats a well-balanced diet.

Want to go the extra mile? Puppies Behind Bars is a program in which prisoners train companion dogs for veterans with PTSD. Donors can sponsor a dog and receive updates on the dog’s training and life with its veteran.

Visit a Veteran

If you have any friends or family that are in the military, this is the perfect time to pay them a visit and help them honor their friends who lost their lives protecting our nation.

Volunteer to Assist Families and Friends of the Fallen

The Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation foundation provides college scholarships and educational counseling to military children who have lost a parent in the line of duty. Visit their website to learn how you can help.

Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization which transports our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Visit their website to learn how you can help.
