Mattresses: Why One Size Does Not Fit All

Mattress Myth One Size Fits All

When we say “one size does not fit all” when discussing what mattress is right for you, we’re not actually talking about the size of the mattress. We’re referring to the fact that big mattress companies do not take the sleeper’s individual needs into account when selling their products.

In the early 2000s, large mattress companies and manufacturers began scaling at a higher volume. Mattresses were being produced at overall lower quality and became standardized to fit ALL bodies, regardless of what is best for YOUR individual body. With the rise of mattress-in-a-box companies like Casper and Purple — who offer very few choices that can’t possibly suit a wide range of needs — it can be hard to know how to pick a mattress that will not only provide you with the best comfort and support possible but will last you a lifetime.

This is where the mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers come in. With over 40 years in the bedding industry, we have the knowledge and experience to help you find the right mattress for you…not for someone else. See what our founder, Youval Meicler, has to say about one-size-fits-all mattresses.

One size does not fit all: Here’s why

Have you heard the phrase, “What works for me, may not work for you”? One size does not fit all very often, and this is especially true when it comes to mattresses. You as an individual are very unique: your body type is unique, your needs are unique, your individual pressure points are different, and your preferences are unique. A standard mattress likely won’t suit all of your needs and can negatively affect sleep quality. Let’s explore that.

Reason 1: Everyone’s body is unique

When we say that a person’s body type should influence how they buy a mattress, we are often met with looks of confusion. Why should that matter? Believe us, it matters. Your body’s unique shape, height, and weight distribution can affect how you lay on a mattress. It is less about your weight than it is about how you carry your weight and how this will impact where you will need the most pressure point relief. Knowing how to choose the best mattress for your body type allows you to understand where your body needs the most support and can help you to determine the type of components that best suit you in a mattress.

Reason 2: Everyone’s comfort preferences are unique

Bed-in-a-box companies are notorious for providing very slim comfort options for their mattresses. There should be more options than just soft and firm. What if, for example, a customer needs a medium-firm mattress that is plush to-the-touch, yet stable? With one-size-fits-all solutions, you can’t find a comfort level that suits your specific needs.

What’s the most comfortable mattress for me? Well, it depends on what you like! Do you want a soft, plush feeling from your mattress or would you prefer something with a bit more stability? You have the option to choose with Texas Mattress Makers! We offer seven different comfort levels in our mattresses so you can find what feels just right.

Reason 3: Everyone’s sleeping positions are unique

Back sleepers, side sleepers, stomach sleepers –– everyone has a preferred position for snoozing. Sleeping positions help us determine a few things for our customers:

  • What areas of your body will be in direct contact with the mattress as you sleep
  • Which areas need the most support
  • What type of components may serve you best
  • What comfort levels may benefit you

It’s also likely that you may not stick to just one sleeping position during the night. If that is the case, we would categorize you as a “combination sleeper” and can recommend specific mattress types to ensure you will be supported and comfortable in just about any position.  When evaluating a mattress we suggest that you focus on what your ideal sleeping position is when you get in bed and where you find yourself most comfortable when you get ready to sleep.

A mattress purchase is a personal decision

We believe mattress buying is a personal experience. At larger mattress companies, you may simply walk into a mattress store, find a mattress that feels nice to you, and boom –– you have a mattress! You may not have even seen the mattress; you go online, pick out a mattress that “looks comfortable,” and click “purchase.” Sounds convenient, right? Wrong.

The reality is, a good mattress purchase requires you to be aware of what you need. Speaking to an expert or trying out the product can guarantee that you are getting a mattress that you love. Big manufacturers do not make mattresses with you in mind, they simply want to sell you a mattress that may or may not work for you. Why would you want to sleep on a mattress that won’t be supportive, comfortable, or long-lasting? In the end, you’ll spend more money replacing standard mattresses than you would by purchasing a well-made mattress that is meant to suit your individual needs.

Find a Mattress that Fits YOU at Texas Mattress Makers

One size does not fit all when it comes to finding your perfect mattress. When making a mattress purchase, you need to know that your body is unique, and what is best for you is not the same as what is best for everyone else. What will make YOU most comfortable and help you get your best night’s sleep is specific to you, so you should have a customized sleep surface for your body.

Other mattress companies do not create mattresses with you in mind…but we do. At Texas Mattress Makers, we take the time to get to know you and your individual needs to ensure that you will leave our showroom with the best fitting mattress for you personally. That is the Texas Mattress Makers difference.

Why are Hotel Mattresses so Comfortable?

Why are Hotel Mattresses so Comfortable?

Why are hotel mattresses so comfortable? As mattress makers, we hear this question more often than you would think.

Have you ever been on vacation and felt that you slept so much better than you do at home? You may be able to sleep longer, wake up with fewer aches and pains, or feel just overall more comfortable on this hotel mattress. In fact, you slept so well, you may want to ask the front desk what type of mattresses they use in their rooms!

If you wake up in your hotel bed feeling more refreshed and well-rested than you do in your own bed and are wondering, “How can I make my bed like a hotel?” The answer may not be what you’re expecting.

Why do I sleep better on a hotel mattress?

Here’s the truth: the hotel mattress isn’t amazing, you’re sleeping on the wrong mattress at home. We know, we know, it can be hard to hear. However, if you tend to sleep better on any mattress that isn’t your own, your mattress at home is likely keeping you from achieving your best sleep. So, where do we go from here?

First, think about how you feel when you wake up at home: does your back, neck, or shoulders hurt? Do you feel sweaty or uncomfortable during the night? Are you sinking into the mattress or does it feel stiff as a board? Now, think about how you felt when you woke up on the hotel mattress: do you feel less pain? Were you able to stay asleep during the night? Did it just feel overall more comfortable?

Understanding what your at-home mattress is lacking can help you determine if there is an issue. If your mattress falls under any of these uncomfortable bed symptoms, it may be time to buy a mattress that will actually meet your needs.

The truth about hotel mattresses

If I slept better on vacation, then how can I make my bed like a hotel?

Here’s another important truth: just because you slept better on a hotel mattress for a few nights does not mean that mattress would be good for you long-term. Hotels buy large amounts of generic, big box-brand mattresses that are not designed with the sleeper in mind. Hotels do not purchase personalized mattresses for their guests, they buy what is cheap and available. In other words, you’re probably sleeping on a hastily made mattress with low-quality components –– that is not the type of mattress you want to take home.

If you truly want to get the best night’s rest at home, you need to find a mattress that best suits your needs. These needs include:

  • Your body type
  • Your height and weight
  • Your preferred sleep position
  • Specific health needs including arthritis, aches or other pains
  • Your preferred mattress comfort level*

*Do hotels use soft or firm mattresses? As mentioned above, hotels will purchase large quantities of generic mattresses that come in a variety of levels of comfort. Meaning, you won’t sleep on the same type of hotel mattress twice, which can be detrimental to your sleep quality over time. Depending on your specific attributes and sleep habits, there is a comfort level that can suit you best.

Texas Mattress Makers carries affordable luxury mattresses in a wide range of levels of comfort (from ultra-soft to ultra-firm), sizes, and types so you can find your perfect match based on your personal preferences.

Why are hotel mattresses so comfortable? There is some truth to the fact that your headspace can impact the quality of your sleep. For example, if you’re on vacation, you are likely more relaxed and less stressed, so falling asleep can seem easier. Better sleep can lead to a clearer mind.

However, if you are sleeping significantly better on vacation, you also may be sleeping on the wrong mattress at home. If you believe it’s time for a mattress refresh and you’re searching for where to buy a mattress in Houston, look no further than Texas Mattress Makers!

Mattress Myth 4: You Need to Replace Your Mattress Every 8 Years

Do You Really Need to Replace Your Mattress Every 8 Years

Mattresses are only built to last as long as the materials contained inside. But when do you need to replace your bed? As long as you don’t cut it, burn it, or water it… the mattress could last well over 8 years. The question is: What’s in yours?

Do You Really Need to Replace Your Mattress Every 8 Years?

If you are reading this, you probably have some preconceived idea of how long you should keep a mattress before replacing it. We have all been told varying time-frames again and again. Certain mattress companies tell you that 8 years is the magic number. This article by ABC News says 7 years, and even less than that if you are over 40. So, it’s no wonder there is confusion over this. But what is the truth?

Our take at Texas Mattress Makers is that it depends completely on how your mattress is made—there is not one answer.

For example, we can put a very high-quality latex in a mattress, and it will last minimally 10 years. On the flip side, we can use the same coils with a lower quality foam on top. While you will have a great mattress, you will have to replace it in 3-5 years. What is right for you in this scenario depends on several factors: What are your current needs? Where and how will you use the bed? What is your budget? To get what you need, it is important to have this conversation when selecting your new bed.

According to the Sleep Foundation, “The best way to tell if your mattress has seen its day is to evaluate your comfort and sleep quality. Check for worn or sagging spots in the middle or at the edges, and make sure that when your partner moves, your position on the bed isn’t disturbed. If you wake up tired or stiff, or if you find hotel beds extra cozy, it could be a clue that it’s time for a change.” In conclusion, there isn’t a magic year. It all depends on the quality of the materials.

Ultimately, the person selling you a mattress should be able to tell you:

  • What you’re buying.
  • What it is made out of.
  • How long it will last.
  • If it is the right mattress for you.

At Texas Mattress Makers, we will be able to do this—and you will get an honest answer to this common myth.
