Snooze News Ep. 23: Box Spring 101

box spring guide

Congrats – you’re smart enough to learn the proper way to support your new mattress! The support system under your mattress is often an after-thought in the mattress industry. And if not an after-thought, it’s marketing ‘spin’ to bundle a box spring with a mattress and can be confusing the consumer. Let us break it down for you in this episode of SNOOZE NEWS!

Platform Beds

If you have a platform bed, meaning the bed frame has a solid, flat bottom to place your mattress on, we recommend purchasing a Bunkie Board. This is a low-profile box spring that will properly support your mattress.

Beds with Slats

If you have a bed frame that is constructed with slats (wooden boards that run horizontally from one side of the bed to the other) we recommend that you still get a box spring to properly support your mattress. If you don’t, the bottom of your mattress will develop wave-like indentions compromising the support layer of your mattress.

Metal Bed Frame

Similar to a bed with slats but with less internal structural support, you must purchase a box spring for your mattress. If not, you’ll be sleeping with your mattress on the floor in no time. This also applies to those who are interested in the bed-in-a-box style of mattress. Foam (no matter what the density) will not support you long-term on a metal bed frame…major drooping!

Rules of Box Springs:

  • How Often – if you are replacing a mattress that you’ve consistently slept on for three or more years, we strongly encourage you to purchase a new box spring.  It’s a small investment to make sure your new mattress is properly supported.
  • How Much – our handmade box spring start at only $63. We build our box springs to last for the full lifetime of your new mattress.  Shop our full inventory, including a box spring built to help with acid reflux, at the link below.

Worried about the height of your box spring as it relates to your mattress and/or bed frame? We’ve made a video just for you!

Still confused? That’s OK – we are here to help!

Snooze News Ep. 22: How To Sleep Cooler

Sleep Cooler with a new mattress

The Coolest Game Changer

If you’re like us and are braving the humidity of Houston in July, you’re likely turning down the AC and turning up the fans. Like most Houstonians, you’re seeing an increasing amount of ‘how to stay cool in bed’ advertisements. Rather than turning your house into a meat-locker, or buying an expensive fan that circulates air under your sheets (that just seems awkward!), we are excited to introduce a new product that will change the way you sleep!

On top of every mattress is a mattress-topper or quilt. It’s the nice piece of soft fabric that is often colored and sewn in an elaborate pattern as a marketing tool to increase the perceived value of the mattress. Nearly all quilts are made the same – the same materials, patterns, thickness, etc. But now there’s a game-changer. A new piece of technology that will keep you cooler at night by eliminating heat transfer from your body into the comfort layer of your mattress. We are proud to introduce to you the Ice Blue, Cooling Technology Quilt.

Ice Blue Cooling Technology is sewn throughout the quilting of the mattress topper to help keep you temperature-neutral throughout the night.

What’s the Technology?

This is a phase changing material that helps regulate your body temperature as you sleep at night. It does not actually make you sleep cold, but it helps prevent your body heat from being absorbed into your mattress components which makes you hot. In short, the Cooling Technology Quilt isolates and wicks away your naturally occurring body heat before it is able to penetrate the comfort and support layers of your mattress. Ultimately this new product keeps you cooler while you sleep and better rested.

Want to learn more? Watch the video below as Youval explains the Cooling Technology Quilt in detail. The Cooling Technology Quilt can be sewn to fit any of the mattresses produced at Texas Mattress Makers.

If you have questions or would like to sleep cooler tonight, visit one of our showrooms in East Downtown Houston and Katy, or call us 7-days a week in Houston or Katy.

Snooze News Ep. 21: Take Our Quiz to Find Your Perfect Mattress!

find your perfect mattress

After a long week at work and restless nights on your mattress that just isn’t cutting it anymore…wouldn’t it be nice if you could shop for a new Texas Mattress Makers mattress online without ever leaving the comfort of your home? If only you could put your faith and trust in the hometown company that has been making quality mattresses for over 40 years…that would be great, right?

Well now you can! Let’s us proudly introduce you to the all-new texasmattressmakers.com!

Let us explain…
On our new website (where you might be reading this blog) you will find a short quiz on our homepage for our visitors to find the perfect mattress for them by answering a few simple questions. The quiz was carefully designed by our mattress expert team to make sure our mattress recommendation is as accurate as possible (without seeing you in-person). Here’s what we ask!

  1. Sleep Position – we need to know how you most often lay in bed. Oh you’re a flopper…we’ve got that covered too!
  2. Gender – your gender matters when it comes to the next question in the quiz. This is a defining factor when it comes to your body type.
  3. Body Type – we’ve created a short video (https://youtu.be/jMlyxIvGFlI) that helps you select the correct body type. We aren’t asking if your in-shape or not…we think you’re cute no matter what!
  4. Mattress Feel – soft, medium or firm? Not sure…we recommend coming into the showroom!
  5. Budget – how much are you looking to spend of your hard earned cash? We don’t want to show you a mattress that’s meant for your neighbor (you know that one)!

We are excited to share the Texas Mattress Makers experience with you through our new website. If you have questions, concerns or need a custom mattress designed, we always recommend visiting one of our showrooms (outside of Downtown Houston or in Katy), or call us 7-days a week:

Snooze News Ep. 17: Why Memorial Day Matters

Why Memorial Day Matters

Do you have plans this Memorial Day? Maybe you’ll go to a BBQ with friends, float the river or catch up on some long overdue household chores. Sounds like fun, right?!

Let’s pause right there.

This Memorial Day, for the second year in a row, Texas Mattress Makers will be closed to honor those who have gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country so that we may live free. Our mission is to reclaim the original meaning of Memorial Day – and because of that – we’ll be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.

We encourage you and your family to visit a national cemetery near you. Remember the brave men and women that fought and died for our country to protect the freedom and liberties that we enjoy every day. Remember families that miss a loved one every day, sons and daughters that miss a parent.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend and fun with friends. Stop and think on Monday, May 27. Our freedom is not free.

Don’t worry we still have great specials all month long. Stop by one of our showrooms and we’ll treat you like family!

Snooze News Ep. 16: Sleep Positions

We’ve all been there…you’re lying in bed and you just can’t seem to get comfortable. No matter how you toss-and-turn something is always hurting. Lying on your side your shoulder hurts and on your back you just feel like you have no support.

As the hours tick by you blame your discomfort on everything but the actual root-cause…your mattress. That’s right – your mattress must match your sleep position. Of course, there are many other factors that determine your comfort level – but – sleep position can’t be emphasized enough.

What should you consider for your unique sleep position? We’re glad you asked!

  • Side Sleeper – you have two main pressure points – the shoulder and the hip. For you to be comfortable you must feel no push back on your shoulder or your hip – and – your ribcage must be supported.
  • Stomach Sleeper – there are four things you must be aware of: the back of your neck, the small of your back, your chest, and your hips. All four points must properly sink into the mattress to keep your body straight.
  • Back Sleeper – the two main pressure points are the back of your shoulders and the back of your hips. Both areas contain very wide bones. Lastly, pay close attention to the small of your back – it must be supported, but not pushed up.
  • Combination Sleeper – you’ll have to come see us if this is you! The combination of pressure points for your unique body composition requires us to see how you fit into a mattress. We’re here to help!

Want to talk more about sleep positions? Stop by one of our showrooms – we’d be happy to further your education. We hope to see you soon!

Snooze News Ep. 15: We’re In Katy, TX!

We’re In Katy, TX

Why Katy?

We understand that not everyone lives inside the 610 loop in Houston, TX. In fact, the Greater Katy area alone is now ‘home’ to over 250,000 Houstonians. And that’s why we opened a new showroom located at I-10 and Highway 99.

Whether you’re coming from Memorial, Spring Branch, Memorial City, the Energy Corridor, Katy, Cypress, Sugarland, Stafford or Richmond – we’re just a short drive away.

Tell me more about the Katy showroom – we’re glad you asked!

  • Same Selection: We offer the same selection at our Katy showroom as our Navigation location and manufacturing facility. Our goal is always to fit you to the bed that will make you comfortable night-after-night. If we don’t have a bed that fits your body type and sleep position, we can always custom-make a mattress for you and your sleep partner.
  • Same Price: We make every mattress you can buy from us which means we set the prices. It is our guarantee that the prices at the Katy showroom are just as low as the Navigation location. Don’t be fooled by the lack of on-site equipment and assembly staff – we’re still the king of making mattresses in Houston.
  • Same Customer Service: Our goal is to educate you on the proper mattress for body – not just sell you a rectangle. Whether you purchase a mattress from us or not, we promise that you’ll be more informed and better equipped to buy a mattress in the future. Give us a visit this week – we promise to treat you like family.
  • The Perfect Location: Last but not least…our Katy showroom location was carefully selected to decrease your drive time. Purchasing a mattress is based on feel – not price, shape, color, height, etc. So stop in at our Katy showroom and experience the Texas Mattress Makers difference.

Katy Showroom Address:

5026 E 3rd St, Katy, TX 77493

Snooze News Ep. 14: Giving Back

Texas Mattress Makers believes in giving back. We believe that positively impacting one life has the power to change the world

That’s why we partner with Houston Children’s Charity. Their Chariots for Children program provides special purpose vehicles used to deliver mobility freedom not otherwise available. The program is dedicated to providing specifically designed handicapped accessible vans to families and equipped transportation to organizations with a similar mission.  HCC has awarded 90 passenger vans, 74 handicapped accessible vehicles, 3 box trucks, 1 car and 2 vehicle modifications to 94 agencies and 73 individual families.

Tune-in to Episode 14 of SNOOZE NEWS to get an inside look at Young Houstonians for Houston Children’s Charity (YHHCC). This group is the premier Young Professional organization for Houston’s next generation of philanthropic leaders seeking to improve the quality of life of Houston’s underprivileged children. YHHCC members enjoy exclusive access to quarterly networking mixers, volunteer opportunities, and the chance to make an impact on Houston Children’s Charity’s (HCC) special children. Since 1996, HCC and its supporters have played an important role in improving the lives of more than 3.5 million local children.

Houston Children’s Charity is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Greater Houston’s underprivileged, abused and disabled children who have been otherwise left behind. The scope of our support is limited only by the availability of resources. Our goal is to leave no legitimate request for assistance unanswered.
