What Type of Mattress is the Most Supportive?

What Type of Mattress is the Most Supportive?

These days, proper mattress support can be difficult to come by — so how do you find the most supportive mattress for you? Buying a bed with the proper support can make all the difference in your sleep quality. Unfortunately, many sleepers make the mistake of buying a mattress simply because it feels comfortable while ignoring the foundation of the mattress itself: the support system.

The experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to explain the importance of proper mattress support, showcase what types of mattresses are typically the most supportive, and share tips for how to find the most supportive mattress for your needs.

Why proper mattress support is important

Better support equals better comfort which results in better sleep.

Think of a mattress’s support system as the foundation of a house. Even if your house is made with great materials on the outside, low-quality materials in the foundation will cause it to crumble. Now, imagine what an unsupportive mattress will do to your body. Spoiler alert: aches and pains!

The job of supportive components in a mattress is to support the comfort layers — so that they can perform properly — as well as the sleeper’s body weight. A supportive mattress should be able to fill in the gaps between your body and the mattress. This means that the mattress can withstand your weight properly as you sleep throughout the night, regardless of sleep positions or firmness levels.

Here is our founder Youval Meicler explaining the importance of proper mattress support and how he, and the other experts at Texas Mattress Makers, can help you to find the most supportive mattress for you.

What type of mattress is the most supportive?

The quick answer to this question is whichever mattress will suit your specific needs. We say this phrase frequently because it is the absolute truth. There is not one type of mattress that will be best suited to support every person. Mattresses are not one size fits all, meaning that what works best for someone else may not work for you.

Which type of mattress is best for back support?

There are a few misconceptions that we need to clear up surrounding this question.

  1. Misconception: One type of mattress is best for back support. Wrong! There is not one singular mattress type that will provide back support for the masses. Whether it’s a hybrid mattress or a memory foam mattress, at the end of the day, the best mattress type for back support is one that will promote healthy spinal alignment and will keep your body comfortable and supportive.

  2. Misconception: Firm beds are best for back support. So, are firmer beds better for your back? They can be if that is what would suit your body best. You see, there is a difference between a firm feel and a supportive mattress. If you hate firm beds, then you will not sleep well on one. It’s as simple as that. You can find a supportive mattress that matches your comfort level preferences perfectly. No need to sleep on a stiff board if you don’t want to.

  3.  Misconception: Only the back needs support. Many sleepers subscribe to the misconception that the back is the only area of the body that needs support. In reality, the back, the spine, the hips, the shoulders, under the knees…all of these areas need to be supported when you lie down on a mattress.

How to find the most supportive mattress for you

Which type of mattress is best for body pain? What mattress will make me the most comfortable? When customers come to us with inquiries like these, we begin by asking them a series of questions about themselves and their sleep habits. The more our experts get to know you, the better they can recommend a supportive mattress that would best suit your needs.

1. Know your sleep preferences

Questions we ask those who visit our showroom*:

Q: What is your height, weight, and body type?

Men and women typically distribute weight differently on their bodies, so it’s nice for us to be able to recommend a mattress that can best fit your body type.

Q: What are your preferred sleep positions? Do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach? Are you a combination sleeper?

Knowing how your body lays when you sleep will help us to determine which areas of the body will need to be supported. For example, if you sleep on your side, we will recommend a mattress that will support your shoulders and hips while promoting healthy spinal alignment.

Q: What are your preferred firmness levels? Do you prefer plush, soft, medium, or firm?

From there we can combine that support with a comfort level that fits your preferences. Supportive mattresses can be soft as well!

Q: Do you have any aches or pains when you wake up in the morning?  If so, where?

Knowing if you have specific issues with your current mattress and sleep patterns will help us find out how your mattress is not supporting your individual body type and sleep preferences.

*You can also find questions like these and more in our Sleep Profile Quiz.

2. Look at the components

Knowing what your mattress is made of is crucial to finding the most supportive mattress. We carry different types of supportive components in our showrooms, including support coils, that can suit any sleeper’s needs and budget.

One of our most popular components is the Quantum coil, which has a reputation for being the most supportive coil in the industry. Mattresses that use Quantum coils are great for sleepers who prefer a medium-firm to firm mattress, sleepers with weight concerns, and sleepers with injuries.  And while this is a top-of-the-line material in terms of offering the highest level of support, it is not for everyone.  We make sure that we are not selling you something because it is the “best” and will raise the cost of your investment.  We truly believe you should buy what is best for you.

Comfort components can also have support benefits. Our high-resilience foam is a more durable and supportive foam component for those who prefer the cushion of foam but don’t want to feel like they are sinking into the mattress. However, the best supportive component for you will all depend on your specific needs.

3. Try the mattress in person

Would you buy a car without test-driving it? Of course not! The same principle applies to beds. You should always try before you buy a mattress to ensure that the mattress feels and performs exactly to your liking. If you skip this step, you may end up paying a great deal of money for a mattress that you don’t even love!

We have multiple Houston-area showrooms that are filled with a variety of different mattresses for you to try in person. Our experts are well-versed in the components used in the production process because we manufacture every mattress that we sell in our showrooms. With their expertise and the knowledge provided about your unique sleeping habits and preferences, they will be able to help you choose the most supportive mattress that will last you a lifetime.

How Much Does it Cost to Make a Custom Mattress?

When we tell people we can create a custom mattress for their needs, the first questions are, “How much does it cost to make a mattress?” and “Are custom mattresses expensive?” Spoiler alert: a custom-made mattress shouldn’t cost you a fortune!

When people hear the word “custom,” they automatically think “expensive” and “unattainable” — two myths that are simply not true. When it comes to custom mattresses, customization simply gives you the opportunity to have the best mattress made to fit exactly what you need.

At Texas Mattress Makers, we believe that you should have the perfect mattress that will help you to achieve the best night’s sleep. If you struggle to find a bed that feels like the right fit, a custom mattress may be the best option for you.

Can a mattress be custom-made?

Absolutely! When it comes to mattresses, one size does not fit all. When you purchase a basic mattress from a retailer, that mattress was likely not made to suit your specific needs. Each and every person is unique, and the reality is that regular mattresses may not be able to accommodate every person perfectly. What may be comfortable for you may not be comfortable for someone else (especially partners!) Custom mattresses are the perfect solution to that problem.

Mattresses can be customized for:

  • Your body type, sleep habits, and preferred sleeping position

  • Any health concerns including back pain, arthritis, and acid reflux

  • Any mattress size or shape

  • Antique beds, boats, loft spaces, and recreational vehicles

  • And more!

Texas Mattress Makers is a Houston-based custom mattress maker that provides handmade, high-quality mattresses for any price range. We believe that custom mattresses can improve your sleep quality and should not cost an arm and a leg. Our experts are here to break down how much it costs to make a mattress.

How much does a custom mattress cost?

When it comes to custom mattresses, you have to remember that this is an investment in the quality of your sleep. On average, custom mattresses are typically more expensive than standard mattresses. However, you shouldn’t have to shell out thousands and thousands of dollars for a quality custom mattress.

Typically, other mattress manufacturers offering mattress customizations will charge you for the materials used, labor, and other miscellaneous fees that can add up to a hefty price tag. Not with us. At Texas Mattress Makers, you only pay for the mattress components used to make your custom mattress. That’s all!

Are custom mattresses expensive?

The only cost difference you will pay for a custom mattress comes down to the materials needed to achieve the best night’s sleep for you and your unique body type and sleep preferences. Where some materials may cost more than others, we do not charge you for the process of customization simply because the process is different.

As the mattress manufacturer, we create our own products in-house so that we do not have additional costs to pay to a third-party manufacturer as retail stores do. This results in significant cost savings on our side, which we are then able to pass on to you. This is the main perk of buying a factory-direct mattress from Texas Mattress Makers!

If you’re interested in our custom mattress process, watch the video below for everything you need to know about buying a custom bed.

At Texas Mattress Makers, you only pay for your custom mattress components

Are custom mattresses expensive? With us, they don’t have to be! We believe that everyone deserves quality sleep, which is why creating attainable custom mattresses is a part of our business model. Our high-quality mattresses are made to satisfy any price range so you can stick to your budget and get a product that will last you a lifetime. On top of our factory-direct savings, we also offer both in-store and online financing options so that you can pay your way.

Mattresses: Why One Size Does Not Fit All

Mattress Myth One Size Fits All

When we say “one size does not fit all” when discussing what mattress is right for you, we’re not actually talking about the size of the mattress. We’re referring to the fact that big mattress companies do not take the sleeper’s individual needs into account when selling their products.

In the early 2000s, large mattress companies and manufacturers began scaling at a higher volume. Mattresses were being produced at overall lower quality and became standardized to fit ALL bodies, regardless of what is best for YOUR individual body. With the rise of mattress-in-a-box companies like Casper and Purple — who offer very few choices that can’t possibly suit a wide range of needs — it can be hard to know how to pick a mattress that will not only provide you with the best comfort and support possible but will last you a lifetime.

This is where the mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers come in. With over 40 years in the bedding industry, we have the knowledge and experience to help you find the right mattress for you…not for someone else. See what our founder, Youval Meicler, has to say about one-size-fits-all mattresses.

One size does not fit all: Here’s why

Have you heard the phrase, “What works for me, may not work for you”? One size does not fit all very often, and this is especially true when it comes to mattresses. You as an individual are very unique: your body type is unique, your needs are unique, your individual pressure points are different, and your preferences are unique. A standard mattress likely won’t suit all of your needs and can negatively affect sleep quality. Let’s explore that.

Reason 1: Everyone’s body is unique

When we say that a person’s body type should influence how they buy a mattress, we are often met with looks of confusion. Why should that matter? Believe us, it matters. Your body’s unique shape, height, and weight distribution can affect how you lay on a mattress. It is less about your weight than it is about how you carry your weight and how this will impact where you will need the most pressure point relief. Knowing how to choose the best mattress for your body type allows you to understand where your body needs the most support and can help you to determine the type of components that best suit you in a mattress.

Reason 2: Everyone’s comfort preferences are unique

Bed-in-a-box companies are notorious for providing very slim comfort options for their mattresses. There should be more options than just soft and firm. What if, for example, a customer needs a medium-firm mattress that is plush to-the-touch, yet stable? With one-size-fits-all solutions, you can’t find a comfort level that suits your specific needs.

What’s the most comfortable mattress for me? Well, it depends on what you like! Do you want a soft, plush feeling from your mattress or would you prefer something with a bit more stability? You have the option to choose with Texas Mattress Makers! We offer seven different comfort levels in our mattresses so you can find what feels just right.

Reason 3: Everyone’s sleeping positions are unique

Back sleepers, side sleepers, stomach sleepers –– everyone has a preferred position for snoozing. Sleeping positions help us determine a few things for our customers:

  • What areas of your body will be in direct contact with the mattress as you sleep
  • Which areas need the most support
  • What type of components may serve you best
  • What comfort levels may benefit you

It’s also likely that you may not stick to just one sleeping position during the night. If that is the case, we would categorize you as a “combination sleeper” and can recommend specific mattress types to ensure you will be supported and comfortable in just about any position.  When evaluating a mattress we suggest that you focus on what your ideal sleeping position is when you get in bed and where you find yourself most comfortable when you get ready to sleep.

A mattress purchase is a personal decision

We believe mattress buying is a personal experience. At larger mattress companies, you may simply walk into a mattress store, find a mattress that feels nice to you, and boom –– you have a mattress! You may not have even seen the mattress; you go online, pick out a mattress that “looks comfortable,” and click “purchase.” Sounds convenient, right? Wrong.

The reality is, a good mattress purchase requires you to be aware of what you need. Speaking to an expert or trying out the product can guarantee that you are getting a mattress that you love. Big manufacturers do not make mattresses with you in mind, they simply want to sell you a mattress that may or may not work for you. Why would you want to sleep on a mattress that won’t be supportive, comfortable, or long-lasting? In the end, you’ll spend more money replacing standard mattresses than you would by purchasing a well-made mattress that is meant to suit your individual needs.

Find a Mattress that Fits YOU at Texas Mattress Makers

One size does not fit all when it comes to finding your perfect mattress. When making a mattress purchase, you need to know that your body is unique, and what is best for you is not the same as what is best for everyone else. What will make YOU most comfortable and help you get your best night’s sleep is specific to you, so you should have a customized sleep surface for your body.

Other mattress companies do not create mattresses with you in mind…but we do. At Texas Mattress Makers, we take the time to get to know you and your individual needs to ensure that you will leave our showroom with the best fitting mattress for you personally. That is the Texas Mattress Makers difference.

Beat The Heat With A New Cooling Technology

The summer heat is officially here in Houston and if you’re someone who has a hard time sleeping at night, maybe it has to do with the heat in your mattress. We teamed up with Derrick Shore and Houston Life to showcase the latest cooling technology to keep you temperature-neutral while you sleep!

At Texas Mattress Makers we’re always researching the latest technology to help you get your best night’s sleep – we only promote components that truly work and not those that just sound good for marketing. After several months of research and testing, we’re excited to showcase our new mattress component: The Ice Blue Cooling Technology. This technology is infused in the quilt of our Cannes Mattress Line and helps regulate your body temperature as you sleep at night.

What’s Ice Blue Cooling Technology?

This phase-changing material helps regulate your body temperature as you sleep at night. It does not actually make you sleep cold, but it helps prevent your body heat from being absorbed into your mattress components which makes you hot. Ultimately this product allows for a much cooler and more restful sleep.

Ice Blue Cooling Technology is sewn throughout the quilting of the mattress topper to help keep you temperature-neutral throughout the night.

This Ice Blue technology is an exciting and revolutionary product for the bedding industry. It’s important to understand that this technology does not actually make you cooler, but instead it keeps your body heat from being absorbed into the rest of your mattress. This also regulates your body temperature to remain neutral and prevents your body heat to go up as you sleep at night. We currently have this product featured on our Cannes Mattresses which comes in either a Plush top or Firm feel.

A #HoustonStrong Year After Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey managed to destroy so much of our city. However, perhaps more than any other event within living memory, it made us even stronger than we were before. As a community, we came together to prove our commitment to the place we call home and our neighbors.

#HoustonStrong after hurricane harvey

Hurricane Harvey’s Effect on Houston and Surrounding Areas

In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, every person in the Greater Houston Area (along with many others) was affected in some way by the storm.

Hurricane Harvey’s Effect on Houston’s Small Businesses

Hurricane Harvey took a major toll on our local economy and many small businesses suffered.

Effect on Texas Mattress Makers

The aftermath of Hurricane Harvey was very difficult for our local business as well. We were forced to close our own doors for several days following the disaster due to the storm. On top of this, we found ourselves grappling with the consequences of a storm on this scale: increased costs.

Due to the lapse in the supply chain, rising transportation costs, and surge in demand, mattress components would see price increases across the board. Foam alone, for example, would rise four times within a 6-month period. Innersprings would also rise in cost as the steel industry struggled to cope with demand. We soon found ourselves struggling to maintain the low prices our customers enjoy inside our showrooms.

Thankfully, as a manufacturer with 30 years in the industry, we were able to negotiate hard with our suppliers to provide pricing relief for our customers. In addition to keeping our prices low despite these increases, we assisted our community as much as possible. We made several donations to struggling families and offered special pricing for those affected by the storm. We are proud to do our small part, but we know our community needs time to recover. With this in mind, we continue to offer pricing assistance to those still recovering from this devastating event.

#HoustonStrong in the Face of Disaster

Hurricane Harvey destroyed so much of our city. However, perhaps more than any other event within living memory, it made us even stronger than we were before. So many people saw the devastation to their homes that would ultimately wipe out their life’s savings. And yet most people would decide to stay. As a community, we came together to prove our commitment to our neighbors and the place we call home.

infograhic about community assistance after Hurricane Harvey

Houston Children’s Charity, our sister charity, teamed up with Astros shortstop Carlos Correa to form Harvey Children’s Relief fund. Together with many generous businesses, organizations, and individuals, they were able to raise $500,000 to provide 5,000 beds to families affected by the storm. Missions on Wheels was able to deploy its first disaster relief trailer to areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. These trailers provide a shelter for emergency response teams and were equipped with mattresses provided by Texas Mattress Makers.

We are so proud of the efforts of Houston Children’s Charity, Missions on Wheels, and the other organizations which mobilized to meet the needs of our city. Our community pulled together to prove that in the face of disaster, we are not just able to rebuild. We are truly #HoustonStrong.
