Jasmine Hernandez attends Cy Fair High School and competes in wrestling. Her coach calls her “one of the toughest workers” the school has had in the wrestling program. However, she never expected to join the sport. Finally convinced to participate, she took home 2nd place in the state tournament for her weight class! Jasmine faces a unique challenge in that she was born without sight in one eye. Wrestling has helped her overcome her insecurities and has proved she can do anything she sets her mind to! Congratulations Jasmine, you are a true inspiration!

She had a frustrating first year which led her to take a 1 year break, but ultimately decided to return and give it her best. Her perseverance and determination paid off and she rose to the top of her team. Awesome job, Tanea!

He is now one of the top competitors in the state, proving that hard work truly pays off. With Nolan’s focus and work ethic we know he will continue to achieve his goals in the future.

Every person in the Greater Houston Area was affected by Hurricane Harvey. In the wake of the aftermath, we all faced the daunting task of recovery while trying to get back a sense of normalcy. Normalcy for us however would be a bit delayed. Shortly before the storm hit, we agreed to appear on CNBC’s Billion Dollar Buyer show. Hosted by Tilman Fertitta, a Houston native who owns the Houston Rockets and a long list of businesses in the hospitality industry, we knew that going through with this project was not just another task. It became our mission to prove we are #HoustonStrong.
Even with the growing list of challenges we faced following the storm, we wanted to show Houston as a small business we could come together and accomplish this goal. A Message of Gratitude + A Better Night’s Sleep for All
As a local business deeply invested in the success of our community, we are proud to support Houston Children’s Charity’s (HCC) “A Better Night’s Sleep Program” on a yearly basis. Despite being affected by the storm ourselves, our community was the first major concern following the storm. With so many homes flooded in the area, we knew we needed to work even harder to recover so we could team up with the HCC once more. In the end, this joint initiative resulted in 5,000 beds for families affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Towards the end of our time with Tilman, we learned he was donating an additional 500 beds to this cause. We are absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed with this generous offer! A place to sleep at night is a basic need that no one should have to go without. It affects so many aspects of your life from job and scholastic performance, your health, and even your emotional well-being. This donation means so much to the people of the Greater Houston Area and will have a lasting effect on their lives.
Additionally, we are so grateful for all the encouragement, support, and enthusiasm shown by our local community in the Greater Houston Area and throughout the United States. Sharing our story, social media posts, or even just a kind word about us is always noticed and appreciated. We are so grateful for the national exposure we obtained through the show. Unfortunately, we only deliver in the Greater Houston Area, and we typically do not sell out of state. All out of state orders would need to get approval from management before we could do this because we strongly encourage people to try a mattress before they buy it. Do You Really Need to Replace Your Mattress Every 8 Years?
If you are reading this, you probably have some preconceived idea of how long you should keep a mattress before replacing it. We have all been told varying time-frames again and again. Certain mattress companies tell you that 8 years is the magic number. This article by ABC News says 7 years, and even less than that if you are over 40. So, it’s no wonder there is confusion over this. But what is the truth?
Our take at Texas Mattress Makers is that it depends completely on how your mattress is made—there is not one answer.
For example, we can put a very high-quality latex in a mattress, and it will last minimally 10 years. On the flip side, we can use the same coils with a lower quality foam on top. While you will have a great mattress, you will have to replace it in 3-5 years. What is right for you in this scenario depends on several factors: What are your current needs? Where and how will you use the bed? What is your budget? To get what you need, it is important to have this conversation when selecting your new bed.
According to the Sleep Foundation, “The best way to tell if your mattress has seen its day is to evaluate your comfort and sleep quality. Check for worn or sagging spots in the middle or at the edges, and make sure that when your partner moves, your position on the bed isn’t disturbed. If you wake up tired or stiff, or if you find hotel beds extra cozy, it could be a clue that it’s time for a change.” In conclusion, there isn’t a magic year.
