The Best Mattress For Menopause

The Best Mattress For Menopause

If you’re searching for the best mattress for menopause, your symptoms may be preventing you from getting a good night’s sleep. Around 30-60% of women experience sleep disturbances during menopause. Some common symptoms that occur during menopause insomnia include hot flashes, aches and pains, and night sweats.

At Texas Mattress Makers, we understand that going through menopause can be an incredibly uncomfortable experience — we’re here to help you feel comfortable again while you sleep. Getting quality rest is such an important factor for our overall wellbeing, especially if you are experiencing menopausal transition.

Getting a better mattress is not the end-all solution to menopause insomnia symptoms. However, finding a mattress that can help alleviate your sleep disturbances caused by menopause will improve your quality of sleep and your quality of life.

How can I sleep comfortably during menopause?

There are many tips out there for getting a more comfortable night’s sleep — exercise daily, avoid caffeine, turn off electronics at least two hours before bed…the list goes on and on. But our answer to “How can I sleep comfortably during menopause?” is to invest in a mattress that will provide you with temperature regulation and pressure relief while satisfying your personal needs.

Every individual experiences menopause differently. No matter what symptoms you face, we can help you find a mattress that will guarantee better rest. Here is how you can find the best mattress for menopause for you.

1. Find a mattress for temperature regulation

According to John Hopkins Medicine, hot flashes or flushes are the most common symptom of menopause. When you experience a sudden hot flash, your body tries to regulate your temperature in the form of perspiration. “Night sweats” refer to getting hot flashes as you sleep, making it difficult to fall or stay asleep. When it comes to menopause and sleep, temperature regulation is crucial, and if you’re sleeping on a mattress that absorbs all of your body heat…well, let’s just say your room will feel like a sauna. A great way to combat this is to invest in a cooling mattress.

Do cooling mattresses help hot flashes?

Absolutely! A cooling mattress is specifically designed to provide body temperature regulation as it allows your body heat to escape as you sleep. Having a mattress with cooling technology — specifically, our Ice Blue Cooling Technology — can help you stay cool all night long, whereas other alternatives will only work for a few hours. Texas Mattress Makers carries cooling-compatible mattresses where an Ice Blue Topper can be sewn directly into the quilting of the mattress topper. If you’re searching for the best mattress for hot sleepers, our cooling collection can combat hot flashes and allow you to sleep soundly all through the night.

2. Find a mattress for pressure relief

Menopause can often be accompanied by aches and pains in the joints. Waking up with joint pain can make you feel groggy and fatigued throughout the day. Finding a mattress to relieve joint pain can be a great investment for a more comfortable and restful night’s sleep.

Do memory foam mattresses cause night sweats?

For some sleepers, memory foam is a great component that relieves pressure as you rest — however, it may not be the best choice if you are in your menopausal transition period. Memory foam may not always cause night sweats. Still, traditional memory foam retains heat, meaning you may end up feeling warmer as the night progresses with little relief. Those who sleep hot or experience hot flashes during the night should stay away from memory foam mattresses. However, we do have a better component: meet latex.

The benefits of latex

If you like the contouring feel of memory foam, latex may be a great alternative option. There are many natural latex mattress benefits, including pain-relieving properties and temperature regulation. The latex molds to the curves of your body for pressure point relief while the open rubber cell structure allows air to flow through easily, keeping you cool and comfortable all night long. Say goodbye to sweaty nights and hello to restful sleep.

3. Find a mattress for your specific needs

Here’s a secret: the way to find the best mattress for menopause is to find a mattress that is made for you and your needs. When it comes to mattresses, one size does not fit all — meaning, what is comfortable for you may not be comfortable for someone else. Every sleeper is different. We all have unique body types, preferred sleeping positions, and preferred comfort levels. If you’re looking to get a better night’s sleep, find a mattress that will satisfy your needs.

A good mattress is the best investment that you can make for your sleep quality. Finding the perfect match can seem intimidating, but our experts can help you learn how to shop for a mattress in-person or online to ensure that you find your best mattress match.

What is the Best Mattress for Menopause? Whatever Mattress Suits Your Needs.

Some mattress retailers may advertise the “best mattress for menopause” but in reality, it’s a plain mattress that was not built to satisfy ALL of your needs. When you shop with Texas Mattress Makers, our experts personalize your shopping experience to provide you with a mattress that will alleviate your menopause insomnia symptoms and be as supportive and comfortable as you need it to be. To us, every customer is unique which is why we handmake our mattresses with each individual in mind.

How Does Sleep Affect Mental Health?

How does sleep affect mental health

How does sleep affect mental health? Sleep problems and mental health conditions can actually contribute to one another. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to explore how getting quality sleep is one of the best things you can do for your mental and overall well-being.

Though the mattress experts at Texas Mattress Makers are not mental health professionals, we do believe that your quality of sleep can impact your quality of life.

How does lack of sleep affect mental health?

A good night’s sleep is essential for your body and mind to efficiently function throughout the day. There are many cases where certain mental health conditions make it difficult for people to fall or stay asleep. According to studies cited in the National Library of Medicine, sleep disruptions can affect the body’s stress system, disrupting circadian rhythms and increasing vulnerability to conditions like depression.

That being said, if you are someone who struggles with a mental health condition, seeking the proper treatment and developing healthy sleep habits can be effective ways to improve your quality of life.

Pro tip: It’s no secret that feeling restless or stressed before bed can result in a bad night’s sleep. Finding ways to relax before bed, including trying different stretches for sleep, meditating, or even reading, can help your body wind down before you hit the pillow, resulting in improved sleep quality.

Does sleeping improve mental health?

Sleep is beneficial not only for our bodies but our brains as well. In our article discussing how to get a clear mind for sleep, we shared research that shows how sleeping is beneficial for brain activity. The act of sleep gives our brains the time to flush out toxins that build up during the day, resulting in improved brain function. To put it simply: if you don’t sleep, your brain can’t function properly.

If our brains are not getting the rest we need, we start to feel stress, irritability, fatigue, and other negative side effects that affect our daily lives. Sleep will not cure mental health conditions entirely, but it does have a major impact on your ability to manage them.

Earlier, we mentioned some tips for developing better sleep habits that can help with the issue of falling asleep. However, there is one important element to getting better sleep that most people tend to forget … and you lay on it every night.

The secret to better sleep

Though there are many factors that can contribute to sleep troubles, there is one key factor that many people tend to overlook: their mattress. When it comes to sleeping, your mattress is the most important tool — yet, most people end up sleeping on a low-quality mattress.

Tossing and turning, not being able to fall or stay asleep, or waking up with aches and pains are all signs of a bad mattress. Sleeping on the wrong mattress can result in a multitude of sleep problems with lasting effects. The secret to better sleep is investing in a mattress with high-quality support and comfort components that will suit your specific needs.

Wondering, “What’s the most comfortable mattress for me?” Don’t worry; we can help with that. When you visit a Texas Mattress Makers showroom, we take the time to get to know you and your needs so that together, we can find the perfect mattress for you. A mattress is an investment in your physical and mental health — so don’t sleep on finding the right one for you.

How to Measure Mattress Sag

How to Measure Mattress Sag

A mattress is often a substantial investment, so any changes in the surface area of your bed can often cause concern.  As you can learn in our article about The Difference Between Natural Body Impressions and Mattress Sag, not every dip in your mattress is cause for alarm. In this article, we will help you learn how to measure a dip in your mattress so you can determine whether your bed has healthy body impressions or unwanted mattress sagging.

How to Measure Mattress Sag in 5 Steps

Things you will need:

  • String, broom, or yardstick
  • Painter’s tape (only needed if string is used)
  • Measuring tape or ruler (any type of measuring tape can be used, but a stiff type such as steel measuring tape is preferable)

Step 1: Remove all bedding

Remove all bedding from your mattress including sheets, pads and foam toppers so you can accurately measure the depression. Any extra materials on top of the mattress may alter your results or make it more difficult to measure. Please note that when measuring a memory foam mattress which has been laid on recently, a few hours may be required before the foam fully decompresses to its natural state.

Step 2: Avoid measurement mistakes

Smooth the top of the mattress with your fingers to eliminate any possible wrinkles in the fabric.

Step 3: Prepare to measure the dip

Lay string, broom, or yardstick across the width of the mattress so it reaches across the deepest part of the depression. If you used string, secure one end of the string to the edge of the mattress with a strip of painter’s tape then gently pull the string taut over the depression and secure it with tape onto the other side of the bed. This type of tape is best because it does not leave any residue on the fabric when removed.

Step 4: Measure the mattress dip

Now that you have either string, yardstick, or broom over the depression in the mattress, you are ready to measure the dip. If you are using a stiff measuring device such as a ruler or steel measuring tape, be careful to avoid placing too much pressure onto the mattress. This could cause the dip measurement to be deeper than it really is. The tip of your measuring device should rest gently on the surface of the mattress. Look for the area where the dip is at the lowest point then measure from this area up to the bottom of the string, broom, or yardstick. This tells you how deep the impression is on your mattress.

Step 5: Interpret the results

If the distance of the depression in your mattress exceeds 2 inches the mattress body impression is not within the advised body impression depth. If the impression does not exceed 2 inches there is no need for concern.

Hot Sleeper vs Cold Sleeper: What Type of Sleeper Are You?

Hot Sleeper vs Cold Sleeper: What Type of Sleeper Are You?

Are you a hot sleeper and find yourself waking up in the middle of the night sweating? Or, are you a cold sleeper and constantly wake up trying to find more blankets to get warmer? Whether you are a hot or cold sleeper, quality of sleep is directly linked to your body temperature and whether you can maintain a quality core temperature during the night.

The Importance of Body Temperature and Sleep

As humans, we are constantly regulating our body temperature for different activities. According to this HuffPost article, “Falling and rising body temperature over the 24-hour day is an important contributor to the body’s sleep-wake cycle: dropping body temperature helps you fall asleep and stay asleep at night, and rising temperature stimulates alertness in the morning.”

Therefore, if you are a hot sleeper and cannot stay asleep because you are tossing and turning then you are going to wake up feeling groggy. Same goes if you are a cold sleeper and you are constantly waking up feeling like you are in an icebox. The good news is there are certain things you can do to regulate your body temperature.

Tips For Hot Sleepers

If you are one of those people who wake up sweating then there are certain things you can do in your environment to reduce your body temperature needed for sleep.

  1. Sleep with the room at a cool temperature. Many studies claim that it is ideal to sleep with your room temperature between 60-67 degrees. This might not be realistic (or economically feasible) if you live in a hot place like Houston, Texas but you should try to sleep with the A/C about 2 degrees lower than you normally would have it during the day.
  2. Control your bedroom’s temperature throughout the day to be cooler in preparation for the night. Try looking into blackout curtains or blinds to block sunlight throughout the day so that you do not have to work too hard at night to cool down your room before bed.
  3. Take a warm shower or bath before bed. That’s right! It might seem counterintuitive to take a warm or hot shower before you go to bed, but after you get out, your body will work to start cooling you down which can jumpstart your body’s cool temperature needed for quality sleep.

Get Cooler & More Comfortable Sleep

Tips for Cold Sleepers

There is so much information on how you can sleep cooler at night, but what about those of you that wake up shivering ?! If you are a cold sleeper then you can also do things to help elevate your temperature for better sleep.

  1. Wear socks. This might seem silly to wear socks in bed but it is common knowledge that if your feet are warm, that your body tends to feel warmer. So, invest in some cute and cuddly socks to wear to bed and if you get too warm you might find them in your sheets in the morning!
  2. Pajamas. Silk pajamas are great at helping your body regulate your internal body temperature. If you are cold it will help warm you and if you are warm it will help make you cooler! But…if you get extra cold then you may want to look at owning some flannel options.
  3. Cuddle up with the right blanket. Getting the right blanket for your beauty rest is important but there are a few things to consider. If you sleep alone or your partner is also a cold sleeper then consider a nice and fluffy down comforter. If you are the cold one sleeping next to a furnace, then consider a cotton option which can make you warm at night but is also breathable for your partner.

Want more tips? Check out our 8 Tips for a Cold Sleeper post!

Those are just some of the tips that might help you sleep better whether you are a hot sleeper or a cold sleeper. However, the answer might also be your mattress! It is important to consider the actual surface you are sleeping on when trying to sleep cooler or warmer at night.

The Right Mattress for Hot Sleepers

When you sleep, your body heat is transferred to your mattress. If you are a hot sleeper, your mattress should have breathable components so that your body heat doesn’t become trapped and create a furnace! Thinking about airflow, cooling technologies and products that help wick away body heat are imperative. Some of these to consider are individually wrapped coils, latex and more.

The Right Mattress for Cold Sleepers

People who sleep hot may think you are the lucky one if you sleep colder, but they do not wake up shivering and craving more blankets! When exploring ways to sleep warmer at night make sure you take your mattress into account. There are various components that retain heat, such as traditional memory foam or viscoelastic foam that can help you from reaching for more blankets multiple times a night.

Stretches and Exercises that Contribute to Better Sleep

Stretches and Exercises that Contribute to Better Sleep

Did you know that there are stretches and exercises that contribute to better sleep? When we hear of tips for unwinding before bed, we are often told to turn off electronic devices or take warm baths. And while these tips might work, research has shown that proper exercise and stretching routines can be a fast and effective way to improve the quality of your sleep by preventing muscle stiffness during your sleep and when you wake up.

Incorporating even just 10 minutes of gentle stretching into your bedtime routine can help you to relax your body and mind before you head to sleep.

Can stretching improve sleep?

Stretching before bed helps to relieve muscle tension, increase blood flow, and can prevent cramps during the night. For the best results, try beginning your stretching session 30 minutes before bedtime.

Here are some suggested stretches to try before bed:

1. Bear Hug

By the end of the day, our shoulders can feel incredibly tense. The bear hug stretch helps to alleviate shoulder blade discomfort or pain.

To do this stretch,

  • Stand tall
  • Wrap your arms around yourself like a hug
  • Breathe deeply and draw your shoulders forward
  • Hold this stretch for 30 seconds
  • Release, and switch the positioning of your arms. If you started with your right on top, switch so that your left is on top.

2. Neck Stretches

We hold a lot of tension in our neck and shoulders during the day. Whether you’re hunched over a computer or sitting all day in an awful desk chair, it’s best to relieve some of that tension before you sleep to ensure a comfortable night’s rest.

To stretch your neck,

  • Keep your face forward
  • Tip your right ear toward your right shoulder
  • Stretch your left arm towards the floor
  • Gently guide your head towards your right shoulder with your right hand –– don’t pull too hard!
  • Hold for 20 to 30 seconds
  • Switch sides and repeat

3. Knee to Chest

For those who sit at a desk for countless hours a day, it’s likely that your back, hips, glutes, and shoulders may become very tight and tense over time if not stretched properly. The knee to chest pose can help open up these areas and alleviate any harsh tension before you sleep.

How to do the knee to chest pose:

  • Lie on your back with your legs extended
  • Bring your right knee up, pull it gently close to your chest and hold it
  • Hold for 30 seconds
  • Then switch sides and repeat 3 times for both your right and left

4. Quad stretch

The quads are a large muscle group on the front of your legs that get a lot of use throughout the day. When your quads feel tight or sore, you may experience discomfort, preventing you from falling asleep. A standing quad stretch is a great and simple way to stretch these muscles.

How to perform the standing quad stretch:

  • Find a wall or chair to help you balance
  • While standing, bend your right knee and hold your ankle or foot behind you with your right hand
  • Gently pull your foot in towards your butt and you’ll feel a stretch at the front of your thigh
  • Hold for 30 seconds then lower your leg
  • Release and repeat three times on the right, then switch sides and repeat

5. Child’s Pose

Child’s pose is a common yoga pose that is great for relaxation, calming your breathing, and reducing stress — making it a great stretch before bedtime. It’s so relaxing, you may be tempted to fall asleep right there!

How to do a child’s pose:

  • Get down on all fours and sit back on your heels
  • Fold forward and allow your forehead to touch the ground or mattress
  • Extend your arms forward to get a nice shoulder stretch
  • Hold this pose for 5 minutes while breathing deeply

What exercises help you sleep better?

In our article How Better Sleep Leads to a Clearer Mind, we discuss how sleep is beneficial for the brain. Exercise can play a large part in how well we sleep throughout the night. Many articles that list proven tips to sleep better at night often mention exercise as a natural aid for those who struggle with insomnia. So, why is that? How does exercise help you sleep more soundly?

According to research done by John Hopkins Medicine, at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise daily increases the amount of slow-wave sleep –– otherwise known as deep sleep –– where your brain has the chance to rejuvenate. Exercise also helps the cognitive process of allowing your brain to decompress which allows you to fall asleep faster.

When it comes to what exercises help you sleep better, Charlene Gamaldo, M.D., medical director of Johns Hopkins Center for Sleep, encourages you to pick any aerobic exercise that you enjoy and will stick with, such as walking, biking, yoga, running, or swimming. You will see a difference in your sleep quality once you get into a routine.

How Better Sleep Leads to a Clearer Mind

How Better Sleep Leads to a Clearer Mind

Here at Texas Mattress Makers, we believe that better sleep equals a better life –– and we think you deserve the best sleep. Sleep is a fundamental factor in the state of our physical and mental wellbeing. In other words, we need sleep to live a full and healthy life! Sleep is not only beneficial for our bodies, but it is beneficial for our brains.

In order to live out our daily lives, we must be able to think clearly. If our minds are not clear and prepared to take on our tasks, there will be repercussions. So, how do we keep our minds clear? Out of the many reasons why sleep is important, the experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to explain how better sleep leads to a clearer mind.

How does sleeping help clear your mind?

While you’re sleeping, your brain flushes out toxins that build up during the hours that you are awake. It’s like a nice cleanse for the mind. Sleep allows the brain to get rid of excess waste (fluid) in the brain –– without it, that waste can clog up your brain, affecting your ability to make decisions, think properly, and retain information during the day.

Before you think about skipping those luxurious 6-8 hours of rest every night, remember how fundamental sleep is for your overall health.

Sleep benefits for brain activity

Sleep and brain function go hand in hand. Sleeping can clear the brain and help maintain its normal functioning. According to a study done by the National Institutes of Health, a minimum of 7 hours of daily sleep seems to be necessary for proper cognitive and behavioral function.

Have you ever heard of the term “brain fog?” If you work a classic 9-5 job or attend classes every day as a student, you have probably said –– and felt –– this phrase before. When you’re running low on sleep, your brain finds it difficult to keep going. But when you prioritize getting enough sleep during the night, your brain will thank you for it.

Here are some notable sleep benefits for brain activity:

  • Think and respond faster: Your brain literally recharges and reboots as you sleep, meaning that it will be able to function to its fullest potential the next day.

  • Recalling details: Sleep plays a large role in both learning and memory. If you’re low on sleep, it will be difficult for your brain to retain information.
  • Solidify memories and boost creativity: While you’re asleep, your brain is making a mind scrapbook –– pasting memories you made throughout the day into its pages. Because sleep helps solidify your memories, you’ll be able better make connections between different pieces of information to come up with new ideas. Therefore, boosting creativity.

  • Regulate your appetite: There have been studies that have shown that those who skimp on sleep are more susceptible to weight gain. Though this could have something to do with tiredness leading to midnight munchies, it actually has more to do with your brain not being able to release the hormones that regulate your appetite. That lack of sleep prompts your brain to release more ghrelin, the hormone that makes you feel hungry. With better quality sleep, you can keep that appetite under control.

Overall, a quality good night’s sleep will set you up for success the next day. Sleep is essential for a healthy and clear mind. Try to incorporate our ways to unwind before bed into your bedtime routine to ensure that you are relaxed and well-rested. Your mind will thank you for it.

5 Ways to Feel Zen for Better Zzz’s: Tips for Unwinding Before Bed

5 Ways to Feel Zen for Better Zzz’s | Texas Mattress Makers

The experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to share their ways to feel zen for better ZZZs. It’s no secret that feeling restless before bed ultimately leads to you resting less. In order to get the best night’s sleep, you need to find ways to relax before bed. This means creating a zen bedtime routine before your head hits the pillow.

Here are some expert tips for unwinding before bed for the best quality sleep so that every night can feel like a moment of zen.

1. Turn off electronic devices 2 hours before bed

Most of us tend to spend our nights watching television, scrolling on our phones, or looking at some type of screen right before bedtime. Though this seems harmless, looking at screens before we snooze is causing more sleep problems than we may realize.

According to studies by the Sleep Foundation, increased screen time during the pandemic decreased sleep quality. Why? The increased exposure to the screen’s blue light can increase symptoms of insomnia, reducing the amount of time spent sleeping significantly. This study found that the blue light found in electronics actually suppresses the amount of melatonin in our bodies –– the chemical that makes us drowsy. Therefore, turning off all electronics before bedtime allows our bodies to feel tired so that we can go to sleep and stay asleep.

As a part of your bedtime routine, it’s recommended that you turn off electronic devices at least two hours before your bedtime for a peaceful night of sleep.

2. Take a warm bath

If you’re trying to find a moment of zen before bed, a warm bath or warm shower can be incredibly soothing and beneficial for your body before it’s time to sleep. A number of studies have shown that those who take warm baths or showers around two hours before bedtime were able to improve their sleep quality. The warm water regulates your body temperature and helps you fall asleep faster.

Warm baths are also great for muscle relaxation which will loosen up any tension in your body, keeping you in a more relaxed state before you decide to doze off. Just make sure you don’t fall asleep in the tub.

3. Master your circadian rhythm

In the National Sleep Foundation’s proven tips to sleep better at night, mastering your circadian rhythm allows you to determine how well you sleep. Your circadian rhythm is the 24-hour cycle that determines the sleeping pattern for your body by releasing melatonin, the sleep hormone, throughout the night.

Here are the external factors that can have major effects on your circadian rhythm:

  • Behavior: Maintaining a regular sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up around the same time every day can help your body regulate your sleep preparation cycle and melatonin levels.
  • Light exposure: Increasing your bright daylight exposure and minimizing your blue light exposure can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
  • Temperature: Keeping your bedroom at a comfortable temperature for you will help you stay asleep longer, not too hot or too cold. If you sleep hot, consider purchasing a mattress with our Ice Blue Cooling Technology for a cooler, more comfortable night’s sleep.

4. Relieve stress before sleep

Many individuals who report having sleep problems are those who struggle with anxiety or dealing with stress. Stress can elevate the heart rate, making it more difficult for you to fall asleep soundly.

Practicing deep breathing exercises or listening to a guided meditation at night can help to lower your heart rate, let your mind and body relax, and be more prepared to fall asleep. These techniques can be used to alleviate stress during the daytime as well so that you feel calm and collected before bed.

5. Find a mattress that suits your needs

Do you want to know a secret? The best way to feel zen all through the night is to have a high-quality mattress that is right for your body and your needs. Sleeping on the wrong mattress can result in a multitude of sleep problems with lasting effects.

Do you suffer from chronic pain? Our experts can help you find a mattress that will best support your body to alleviate pain. Do you sleep with a partner? Investing in a motion isolation mattress may help with minimizing partner disturbance. The right mattress can be the key to finding your moment of zen every night.

How to Find The Best Mattress For Acid Reflux For You

How to Find The Best Mattress For Acid Reflux For You

If you suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), you may be searching for the best mattress for acid reflux, instead of the best mattress for you. Though some mattress companies sell products labeled as a “GERD mattress” this does not guarantee that these products will relieve you of your symptoms or be what fits the rest of your sleep needs. The good news is, there is a way to find relief without compromising your comfort.

The experts at Texas Mattress Makers are here to provide their top tips for relieving your acid reflux symptoms as you sleep.

Sleeping with acid reflux: What you should know

If you lay flat on a mattress (back or stomach), you risk choking on acid reflux while sleeping due to a backflow of acid coming up from your stomach and into your throat. This fear can lead sleepers who suffer from GERD to ask, “What is the best sleeping position?”

A study featured in the National Library of Medicine concluded that sleeping elevated and on your left side reduces the amount of acid that can enter your throat during sleep. However, you can sleep in your preferred sleep position regardless.

Doctors have found that sleeping with your head elevated in any position can provide long-term relief and comfort for those who suffer from acid reflux.

Wondering how to raise your mattress for acid reflux? While some customers try to use piled pillows as a way to elevate their heads while they sleep, they don’t feel supported for long. It’s better to invest in a frame that keeps you elevated in the proper position, an adjustable base, adjustable bed frame, or other sloped devices to provide a more secure source of elevation.

Are adjustable beds good for reflux?

Adjustable bases can help with acid reflux, but we’ve got something better. At Texas Mattress Makers, expert engineers collaborated with gastrointestinal doctors to develop this foundation called the Acid Reflux Box Spring with the goal of promoting long-term relief for sleepers struggling with GERD. This box spring is exclusively at Texas Mattress Makers and it prevents an influx of stomach acid from reaching your esophagus by keeping your head elevated as you sleep.

When people say they are looking for the best mattress for acid reflux, we tell them that the mattress itself is not going to suppress your GERD symptoms. The answer to the question, “What kind of bed is good for acid reflux?” is whatever will give you the best night’s rest. Your mattress should provide you with comfort and support, that’s it!

This is why we recommend buying the best mattress for you first, then purchasing our exclusive Acid Reflux Foundation, an adjustable base or box spring if you need it. Here is how Texas Mattress Makers can help you find your perfect mattress.

Take our quiz

In order to find you your perfect mattress, we want to get to know you! Our Sleep Profile quiz will help us figure out what type of sleeper you are. The questions will go something like this:

  • What is your gender?*
  • What is your height/weight/body type?
  • What is your preferred sleep position?
  • Do you prefer a softer or firmer mattress? Or, in between?
  • Do you wake up with aches and pains?
  • What size of mattress do you want?
  • What’s your budget?

Based on your answers, the quiz will generate the mattress it thinks is the best for you –– however, this does not mean it is the only choice for you. This is where our showroom experts come in.

*We ask about gender because gender impacts your body weight placement which is more valuable than your actual weight.

Visit our showroom

The easiest way to find the best mattress for acid reflux for you is to visit our showroom. Each sleeper has their own individual needs, so our experts work with each and every person to find one that works for them.

When you visit our showroom, our experts will likely ask you more in-depth questions including ‘Do you sleep with a partner? Do you need a mattress with motion isolation?” If you do suffer from a condition like GERD, let us know! We will help you find the best mattress to suit your unique sleep needs and suggest an adjustable base or our Acid Reflux Box Spring.

Our showroom floor features mattresses that are already broken in so you can have an idea of how it will feel weeks into sleeping on it. No other mattress company does this. We also offer custom mattress options for individuals who want a particular type of mattress.

How to Get Your Best Sleep Ever this National Sleep Awareness Month

March is National Sleep Awareness Month | Texas Mattress Makers

At Texas Mattress Makers, we always love sharing our “education” tips with our customers; but for National Sleep Awareness Month, we wanted to share the secret of the #1 contributor to getting the best sleep ever. The answer is quite simple.

Your mattress. But not just “any” mattress, the right mattress for you

For National Sleep Awareness Month 2021, we’ll be discussing how the right mattress is an important component of getting the best quality sleep, and how Texas Mattress Makers can provide you with the perfect mattress.

When is National Sleep Awareness Week?

Let’s be honest, we all take sleep for granted. As a whole, we’re not as aware of how important sleep is for our everyday lives. That’s why National Sleep Awareness Month in March, and National Sleep Awareness Week (March 14th – 20th of 2021) are great observations to the crucial benefits sleep has on our health. There are other national days that correlate with sleep importance to keep on your calendar:

  • National Take a Nap Day (Tuesday, March 9th) – the day after Daylight Savings Time.  Daylight Savings Time can essentially “delay” your sleep cycle due to the loss of one hour of sleep. This can make you more tired during the day, resulting in the need for a nap.
  • National Sleep Day (Friday, March 19th) – the same day as World Sleep Day to recognize the importance of sleep and the effects it has on your overall health and life.

We at Texas Mattress Makers are in the business of making sure you get a good night’s sleep every day of the year. We are passionate about conveying the health benefits of sleep year-round, especially during National Sleep Awareness Month. So, how does sleep affect your overall health?

How Does Sleep Affect Your Daily Life?

Sleep is one of the most important factors affecting your physical and mental health, but only 1-in-10 Americans consider sleep to be a priority. Considering how much time we spend in our beds per day, you’d think that number would be higher. During sleep, your body is working to support healthy brain function to carry you through your everyday activities. In other words, you need sleep to physically function.

Other important aspects of our health including diet and exercise are also affected by our quality of sleep. A good night’s sleep can determine your metabolism and how you will physically feel the next day. Sleeping well helps us feel better.

Some of us associate exercise equipment with aiding us in staying healthy. Weights, treadmills, and other equipment are used to make our body stronger, and in turn, healthier. In a way, your mattress is a tool used to keep you healthy. So why should you settle for any old mattress? The reality is, you shouldn’t settle for just any mattress.

The Importance of the Perfect Mattress

Think about your last few nights of sleep. Were you tossing and turning? Did you feel too hot? How did you feel when you woke up? Were you still tired or groggy? Even though approximately 9 million Americans use sleep aids in hopes of a better rest, they’re ignoring the most crucial aspect of sleep –– their bed. If you are waking up every morning not feeling like you got a good night’s rest, you’re sleeping on the wrong mattress. It’s likely that your bed could have one or more of these bad mattress symptoms, meaning it’s time for an update.

Our founder and CEO Youval Meicler has been educating customers on the importance of a good mattress for over 40 years, and has taught our experts how to do the same. We can confidently explain and showcase each mattress’s materials and components and the cause and effect of those components. Meaning, you will know how the mattress will perform and what type of sleeper it will best suit. And if you don’t find one that best fits your needs, we can explore custom options at no additional cost.

A mattress is an investment in your health –– so don’t sleep on finding the best one. You will be doing yourself a great service by choosing a mattress that will benefit you in the long run by a manufacturer who cares about your quality of sleep.

A mattress from Texas Mattress Makers will give you better sleep quality

1. We can give you exactly what you need in a mattress

The average person spends seven or more hours of the day sleeping in their bed. That’s a lot of time to be laying on a mattress. And yet, online mattress companies are trying to persuade customers that their one-for-all products will help you sleep better. Mattresses are not one-size-fits-all. As the top custom mattress makers in Texas, we have the tools, the resources, and the expertise to hand make all of our mattresses so you can get exactly what you want in a mattress.

2. We get to know you and your needs

At Texas Mattress Makers, we are invested in your unique sleep patterns and needs to ensure that we find the best mattress for you. We’re not interested in simply selling you a mattress –– we’re interested in helping you find a mattress that will improve your quality of sleep, and your life in the long run.

3. We have a large selection of mattresses to choose from (and try out!)

Remember Goldilocks and the Three Bears? Goldilocks was dedicated to finding a mattress that was just right, and laid in three before she finally found the one that felt right to her body. Shopping at Texas Mattress Makers is a lot like that — just without the breaking & entering and the trio of angry bears!

Our vast selection of mattresses in our showrooms allows our customers to try a bunch of different mattresses out before finding the perfect one to take home. We’ll ask you questions to dictate if you’d prefer a firm vs. a soft mattress, or if you sleep with a partner, we’ll give our suggestions for the best mattress for couples. The possibilities are endless when it comes to our selection, and our experts will help you find the best option.

Is There a Healthiest Sleeping Position?

Is There a Healthiest Sleeping Position?

Since sleep is one of the most important factors to a healthy lifestyle, you may have asked questions such as, “What is the healthiest sleeping position?” “Does sleeping position affect health?” or “What is the worst sleeping position?” Just like mattresses, sleeping positions are not always one-size-fits-all. If you do not have sleeping-related conditions or pain, there isn’t one sleeping position that’s proven to be demonstrably healthier than others. The important thing is that your sleep position allows you to get comfortable and get quality sleep.

However, if you suffer from certain conditions or are struggling to sleep due to changes in your body (such as pregnancy or injuries), modifying your sleep position for your particular needs can improve your sleep quality. Let’s discuss the different types of sleeping positions as well as their benefits for your body and certain health conditions.

A quick note on sleeping position problems vs. mattress issues

Before we get into our discussion of healthiest sleeping positions, it’s important to keep in mind that your sleep position may not be to blame for your sleep issues if it’s your mattress that is causing you discomfort. If you try the tips outlined in the following article and are still struggling to get comfortable at night, it might be time to consider a new mattress. For more information, check out our articles regarding bad mattress symptoms and how to choose a mattress

Choosing the Right Sleeping Position for You

There are many factors that can determine what sleeping position could be best for your needs:

  • Age
  • Height and weight
  • Back, shoulder, neck, or joint pains
  • Sleep apnea
  • Snoring
  • Pregnancy

Fortunately, research has been able to give us some sound advice on ideal sleeping positions for these situations.

Best sleeping position for posture improvement: Your choice

Some sleeping positions are better than others to improve your posture and prevent pain. But again, what makes any sleeping position the healthiest sleeping position for you all depends on your needs. For example, if your mattress does not completely support your body or your mattress is too soft, there will most likely be gaps between you and the bed, which can create a lack of support. This is a red flag that it’s time for a new mattress. However, if you’re unable to purchase one, a quick fix  is adjusting your position with pillows. If you sleep on your…

  • Side: Place a pillow underneath your waist and one pillow between your knees, then bring the knees closer to the chest in a fetal-like position. These will alleviate pressure in the knees and hips while keeping your spine aligned.
  • Back: Place a small pillow underneath the arch of your back for  support or one underneath your knees to reduce stress on the joint.
  • Stomach: Place a pillow under your hips to take some pressure off of your back.

Sleeping on your stomach is arguably the worst sleeping position for your posture, as it’s especially hard to keep your neck in a neutral position when sleeping on your stomach. This position also puts pressure on your stomach and lungs, so you may wake up with aches, pains, and numbness after sleeping on your stomach. The right mattress with the right support (as well as the right pillow) may help prevent some of these issues.

Best sleeping position for shoulder pain/back pain: Back

Research indicates that sleeping on the back provides the best weight distribution across the body and may be the healthiest sleeping position for shoulder and back pain. Physical therapists also recommend sleeping with a towel underneath your legs to maintain the curve in your lower back to keep the muscles stress-free. Again, a mattress that is suited to your body type (height, weight distribution, etc.) can significantly alleviate these pains.

Best sleeping position for snoring and sleep apnea: Side

If you’re known for snoring through the night, changing your body position while sleeping could be the first step to relief. When asleep, all of the muscles in your body, including your throat muscles, relax. As your throat muscles relax (and come into closer contact with one another), they create the conditions for air to vibrate as it passes through your throat. These conditions cause snoring and can contribute to sleep apnea. When you sleep on your back, the combination of gravity and your relaxed muscles increase the likelihood of snoring.

Sleep studies have shown that those who sleep on their backs with their faces upward — also known as a “supine position” — have a harder time breathing throughout the night. Sleeping on your side, however, reduces compression in your airways which makes it easier to breathe, making it one of the healthiest sleeping positions for individuals who struggle with snoring or sleep apnea.

Best sleeping position for digestion: Left side

Digestion problems can make sleeping difficult. And waking up with heartburn, constipation, or even acid reflux can make anyone want to rethink their sleep style. Sleeping on your left side may promote better digestion and even ease heartburn. With the help of gravity from sleeping on your left side, the small intestine moves waste to the right side first, then to the large intestine and lower colon on the left side more smoothly. Having a nice supportive pillow and mattress will help keep your head in a neutral position and keep your midsection from sinking.

Pro Tip: If you suffer from gastrointestinal conditions including GERD, consider investing in an Acid Reflux Box Spring, designed to reduce or eliminate heartburn and choking for a comfortable sleep experience.

Should I Change My Sleeping Position?

Even if there isn’t technically a healthiest sleeping position, that doesn’t mean that one sleeping position won’t be more comfortable for you than another. When you have trouble getting comfortable, a change in sleeping position may help.

If, after reading this article, you decide to try a new sleeping position, be patient with the process. Our bodies tend to revert to the most familiar position once we’re asleep, so it can take some time to make a new sleeping habit. Just remember that regardless of how you sleep, the key to feeling rested when you wake up is making sure that your mattress properly aligns spine, along with your head, shoulders, and hips. An adjustable foundation can be useful to customize your bed to better align your spine as you sleep in your preferred position.

Should switching up your sleep position not help your discomfort as you sleep, it might be time to consider investing in a new mattress.
